Spain to Air-Drop 12 Tons of Food Aid Over Gaza

Israa Farhan
Spain announced on Monday its plan to air-drop 12 tons of humanitarian food aid over Gaza later this week, as famine risk escalates in the war-torn and blockaded Palestinian territory after 21 months of conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Spain becomes one of the few Western nations to join Middle Eastern countries in delivering aid by air to Gaza's civilian population, which is facing a deepening humanitarian crisis.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, a vocal critic of Israel's military campaign in response to the Hamas attacks, stated during a press conference that the aid operation is scheduled for Friday and will be launched from Jordan using Spanish Air Force aircraft.
The Spanish Ministry of Defense
confirmed
that the aid will follow a similar format to a previous mission in March 2024, when Spain delivered 26 tons of food supplies to Gaza by air.
Sánchez emphasized the urgency of the mission, calling the famine in Gaza a stain on humanity and stressing that stopping it is a moral obligation.
The planned air drop highlights growing international concern over the dire conditions in Gaza, where access to food, water, and medical supplies remains severely limited due to the prolonged conflict and blockade.

Portugal to consider recognizing Palestinian state in September - War on Gaza

Portugal will consider recognizing the State of Palestine at the UN in September, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro's office said Thursday. France, Britain, and Canada have all recently voiced, in some cases qualified, intentions to diplomatically recognize a Palestinian state. These moves come amid growing international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israel's 22-month war and five-month blockade have pushed 2.3 million people into famine. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, the death toll from Israel's war since October 7, 2023, has risen to 60,332, with 147,643 injured. The majority of the dead are women and children. Portugal "is considering recognition of the Palestinian state, as part of a procedure that could be concluded during the high‑level week of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, to be held in New York in September," the statement said. The decision was made after "multiple contacts" with partners, given "the extremely worrying developments in the conflict, both from a humanitarian perspective and through repeated references to a possible annexation of Palestinian territories" by Israel, the statement added. A UN-backed international hunger monitoring organisation on Tuesday said: "Famine thresholds have been reached for food consumption in most of the Gaza Strip and for acute malnutrition in Gaza City." The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) alert warned that the "worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out in the Gaza Strip" under Israel's blockade. Portugal may join other countries such as Britain, Canada, and France, which have signalled their intention to recognize the Palestinian state in September. Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron said his country would officially recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September, hoping to create collective momentum in this direction. "The government took a very carefully considered decision in consultation with its European and other partners," Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa responded immediately after the executive's announcement. *This story was edited by Ahram Online. Volcano Eruption in Indonesia Sends Ash 10km Into Sky

Israa Farhan A volcano in eastern Indonesia erupted on Friday, releasing a towering ash plume nearly 10 kilometers high, just weeks after a previous eruption disrupted air travel in Bali. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, located on the tourist island of Flores and standing at 1,584 meters, erupted following a build-up of volcanic gases, according to Indonesia's National Volcanology Agency. The agency confirmed the ash cloud rose approximately 10 kilometers above the summit. Agency chief Muhammad Wafid stated that the eruption was caused by a gas accumulation over recent weeks. He warned that the eruption could trigger dangerous volcanic mudflows or debris flows, particularly if heavy rainfall occurs. These flows could pose serious threats to communities located near rivers surrounding the volcano. No casualties or damage have been reported so far, but authorities have advised residents and tourists to avoid activities within a 6-kilometer radius of the volcano. Last month, the same volcano erupted, sending ash 18 kilometers into the sky and causing the cancellation of 24 flights at Bali's airport. Indonesia is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for high volcanic and seismic activity. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
