After £800m and four years, Everton's new stadium makes its grand debut

The Guardian17-02-2025
The clue is in the name, yet it is hard to imagine now that Bramley‑Moore dock was an abandoned, neglected body of water 1,303 days ago. Twelve unexploded anti-aircraft shells from the second world war still lurked in the depths, waiting to be removed by the Royal Navy, when Everton took possession of the site on 26 July 2021. Less than four years later a magnificent, imposing, futuristic stadium has opened on the banks of the River Mersey. A torturous journey decades in the making has been worth every step.
It was July 2019 at the nearby Titanic Hotel when the architect Dan Meis unveiled his grand plans for Everton's new home. Tonight it welcomed its first guests, the 10,000 fortunate Evertonians selected via a ballot to attend the first test event and game at Bramley-Moore dock. A friendly between Everton's and Wigan's under-18s has never felt so significant, or such a privilege to observe. Future quiz question answers: Everton's Demi Akarakiri kicked the first ball and Wigan's Harrison Rimmer scored the first goal at Everton Stadium. Everton lost 2-1.
Everyone present was sat in the South Stand, a steep bank of 14,000 seats that will function as the home end when Everton relocate here next season. In all likelihood as a Premier League club, something that could not have been said with great certainty before David Moyes returned last month as manager. The views are superb, no obstructions here, and also impressive when looking out from the back of the South Stand at a panorama of the city skyline. The facilities are excellent, too. The concourses have vast amounts of space, refreshment kiosks and toilets. The upper Gwladys Street at the 133-year-old Goodison Park this is not.
Wigan's visit was the first of three test events required for Everton to obtain the licence and safety certificate to operate at 52,888 capacity next season. All four stands will be open for the second and third events, albeit at a reduced 25,000 capacity and near capacity respectively. It is estimated the stadium will attract 1.4 million visitors to the city annually, create 15,000 jobs and contribute £1.3bn to the UK economy over its lifetime.
What a quest it has been to get here. Everton went through two failed stadium projects at King's Dock and Kirkby, plus a proposal that never really got off the ground at Walton Hall Park, before settling on this site in the early years of Farhad Moshiri's ownership.
Moshiri's one positive legacy should be celebrated, even though the £750m-£800m project came close to sinking Everton at times: £55m of that sum was spent preserving and restoring heritage works at Bramley-Moore, including the original dock walls that remain under the stadium, the railway tracks that carried coal to steamships on the Mersey and the Grade II-listed hydraulic tower that forms a symbolic part of a 17,000-capacity outdoor plaza. The infill of the dock took three months and 480,000 cubic metres of sand dredged from the Irish Sea. Two porpoises had to be guided out of the dock before it was sealed for good. Architecturally, Everton Stadium is the most striking, ambitious addition to the Liverpool waterfront since the Three Graces were built in the early 1900s. They were also built on an infilled dock, St George's.
The inevitable teething problems that have arisen so far mainly concern access and have been beyond Everton's control. Liverpool city council recently announced a raft of parking restrictions within a 30-minute walk of the stadium that have caused uproar among local businesses. The restrictions, which came into effect on Monday and are scheduled to last 18 months, apply not only on match days but 365 days of the year. More than 7,000 people have signed a petition calling on the council to scrap the year-round parking restrictions. Local residents and businesses claim they were enforced without consultation.

A new fanzone at nearby Sandhills train station – now just some tarmac and safety rails with no cover from the elements – was widely ridiculed when unveiled by the city region mayor, Steve Rotheram. The local authority has had more than four years to prepare for this transformational development, one that will have a huge impact on the regeneration of north Liverpool, and needs to improve transportation plans in the months ahead.
Everton have played their part in ushering in a new era, for the city and for themselves. The sadness of leaving Goodison is offset by a glimpse of Everton Stadium.

'I don't see it working' - Man Utd urged to avoid move for £32m Chelsea star

Manchester United have been urged to reconsider a move for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson as they look to provide Ruben Amorim with more attacking firepower. Matheus Cunha has already arrived from Wolves, and United are still hoping to bring in Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford as part of a new-look attack for Amorim next season. In addition, the Red Devils have been keen to add an out-and-out striker, particularly if Rasmus Hojlund were to leave the club. United explored a deal for Liam Delap before he chose to join Chelsea, while Viktor Gyokeres has only had eyes for Arsenal despite the chance to reunite with former boss Amorim. Ollie Watkins and Hugo Ekitike have been linked already this summer, but United are now reportedly one of several clubs considering a move for Chelsea striker Jackson. The Senegal international, who joined from Villarreal for £32million two years ago, has notched up 24 goals and 10 assists in 65 Premier League appearances. However, the 24-year-old finds himself down the pecking order after the arrivals of Delap and Joao Pedro, and as such the Blues are willing to entertain offers. A deal for Jackson may not come from cheap with Chelsea in no need to sell, and former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour believes the deal may not be in United's interest. 'The problem you have is the lack of number nines and the price goes up,' he told talkSPORT. 'But with some of the strikers Man United have had over the years, I don't think he would get anywhere near the top category.' Alan Brazil, meanwhile, feared that Jackson's wasteful finishing in front of goal would not make him a good match for a United side who struggled greatly to create regular chances last season. 'He can't finish,' the former United striker said. 'Well he can finish but he needs a lot of chances to score. 'And I would say he'd get more chances but Chelsea are a better side than Man United so I don't see it working. You never know and I wish him well but I don't see it working.' More Trending Jackson endured a frustrating spell at the recent Club World Cup, failing to score in the United States and banned for two games after picking up a red card against Flamengo. And given the impressive cameos from Delap and Pedro, Alan Shearer reckons that the writing could be on the wall for Jackson at Stamford Bridge. 'That wouldn't surprise me if he was sold to someone, whether in our country or not, that's one that wouldn't surprise me if they made that decision,' he said on The Rest Is Football Podcast. 'They've got some serious options in every forward position.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Stuart Pearce tells Man Utd and Arsenal to sign 'magnificent' 20-goal forward

Stuart Pearce has 'no doubt' that Manchester United and Arsenal have been looking at a deal to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford this summer. Wissa, who mainly operates as a centre-forward but can also play as a left winger, scored 20 goals for Brentford last season across all competitions. The 28-year-old DR Congo star was linked to Tottenham last month, with Spurs now under the management of former Bees boss Thomas Frank. But Pearce feels Wissa would be a 'major asset' for the likes of United and Arsenal if they were to recruit him in the current summer transfer window. 'There's no doubt Manchester United and Arsenal would have been looking at Yoane Wissa,' Pearce told BoyleSports, who offer the latest Premier League odds. The goals he's delivered while playing with width and playing down the middle as well. 'That's a major asset for any football club and the fact that Nottingham Forest have moved the odd player on recently, along with other sides in the division, you would think that by the time the season starts, he might well have moved on [from Brentford].' It's reported that Brentford want at least £50m to even consider selling Wissa before the start of the 2025-26 campaign. Wissa has played a total of 137 Premier League games for Brentford to date, registering 45 goals and 13 assists. He joined the Bees four years ago from French side Lorient and Wissa is under contract at the Gtech Community Stadium until June 2026, with the option to extend the deal for a further year. Meanwhile, Pearce has advised current Arsenal star Ethan Nwaneri, 18, to snub a move to Newcastle United in the summer transfer window. 'Ethan Nwaneri to Newcastle? If I was advising the player, I would advise him to stay at Arsenal and fight for his place for another year because of his age,' Pearce added. More Trending 'Or alternatively, go to a club that you're not gambling on whether you're going to get in the first team or not. 'What he needs to do is play 30 plus games next season and be a regular starter. 'I'm not sure that at Newcastle he'd get those 30 starts, we're not talking about 30 games coming off the bench. 'That is key for the correct move for him.' I've just had some breaking Conor Coady news confirmed and it's exactly what Rangers want to hear

Our man Keith Jackson kicked off tonight's Hotline Live with some breaking news about Conor Coady Leicester have identified their replacement for Conor Coady – and he could even be in place at Ibrox to be registered before tomorrow night's Champions League deadline. ‌ That's the breaking news that kicked off tonight's Hotline Live, and it will be music to Rangers ' ears as they look to get a deal for the defender over the line. ‌ Russell Martin has been eyeing a move for experienced defender Coady since the window opened but it's been held up at Leicester's end due to a change in manager. ‌ But Marti Cifuentes is in place now and, as he flies out for pre-season with his new squad, there was no sign of Coady in footage or images from training or from the airport. tonight's Hotline Live, it's all pointing in one direction. "Before we came on tonight, it was confirmed to me that Leicester have been in talks with another centre-half who they see as a ready-made replacement for Coady. "An English guy with bags of Premier League experience, who they feel fits the profile that well be left if Conor Coady was to leave. These talks have been ongoing for a couple of days and, I believe, at quite an advanced stage. "So then you tie into that the new boss at Leicester, Marti Cifuentes, has started work today – the club released a bit of footage from the training ground and there was no sign of Coady. ‌ "Then minutes before we came on, footage emerged from Midlands airport of the Leicester players getting on board a chartered flight. And without being definitive on it, we couldn't see any sign that Coady was among the players making the trip. "From a Rangers perspective, given the news we broke 24 hours ago – we did say that we would be in a position to give them more of a clue about the situation tonight. And at this time tonight, I think we've established that Rangers have got their eyes on a replacement, and there is no sign of Conor Coady is on Leicester's flight to Austria. "The significance of all of that is Rangers need to register their squad for Panathinaikos tomorrow night. Two players can be added to that 24 hours ahead of kickoff, so there is some leeway to make some late changes to that. "But in an ideal world for Russell Martin, and for Conor Coady, they'd like to be in a position to have his name on that list when it's registered with UEFA tomorrow night. It looks like it's heading in that direction, but it's a story we're very much working on. My phone's still going – we might even get some sort of confirmation during the show..."
