Congress alleges gerrymandering in JMC delimitation exercise

Time of India22-06-2025
Jaipur: Congress party members have raised allegations of manipulation in the ongoing delimitation exercise of the merged Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC). The accusations primarily centre around the Kishanpole assembly constituency, where party members claim the process has been designed to fragment minority and specific caste vote banks to benefit the BJP.
The delimitation committee has significantly reduced the number of wards in the Kishanpole zone from 21 to 12, raising concerns among Congress members. Currently a Congress stronghold with 11 out of 21 councillors, party officials argue the new arrangement would limit their winning potential to just four or five seats. Yunus Qureshi, former secretary of the Congress party's minority cell, highlighted specific instances of alleged manipulation.
He pointed out that the committee's final draft shows haphazard ward formation, with overlapping boundaries that appear designed to split Congress vote banks. Qureshi cited the example of Ward 56, where selective merging with areas from Wards 55 and 63 has allegedly been done to create an artificial electoral balance favouring the BJP.
The impact on minority representation appears particularly significant. Abdul Khan, a senior Congress councillor from JMC Heritage, noted that the number of Muslim-dominated wards has been reduced from 33 to just 15 in the new arrangement.
Currently, there are 30 Muslim councillors in JMC Heritage and three in JMC Greater from the Congress party.
The reduction in the total number of wards is expected to intensify internal party conflicts during candidate selection, with Congress potentially having to sacrifice around 50 prospective candidates. "Congress is already infested with infighting. The infighting would increase when the party finalises the list of candidates, sacrificing at least 50 prospective candidates," said councillor Khan.
ADM (II) Jaipur, Ashish Kumar, confirmed that the final draft of the delimitation map is currently undergoing clerical corrections and will be finalised by the state govt within the next few days.

'System killing farmers': Rahul Gandhi slams PM Modi over 'no MSP guarantee'; says 'farmers sinking deeper into debt'

Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said that farmers are falling into deeper debt daily and claimed that the system is killing farmers quietly, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had pledged to increase farmers' income twofold, is busy "watching his PR spectacle. " On the social media platform X, Gandhi referenced a news report indicating 767 farmers in Maharashtra died by suicide within three months. "Imagine... in just 3 months, 767 farmers in Maharashtra have taken their own lives. Is this just a statistic? No. These are 767 shattered homes. 767 families that will never recover. And the government? Silent. Watching with indifference," he said. Gandhi pointed out increasing agricultural costs, stating, "Farmers are sinking deeper into debt every day--seeds are expensive, fertilizers are expensive, diesel is expensive... but there's no guarantee of MSP. When they demand loan waivers, they are ignored" He referenced recent news, stating, "But those with billions? Their loans are easily waived by the Modi government. Just look at today's news--Anil Ambani's Rs48,000 crore SBI 'fraud'." The Congress MP stated, "Modi ji promised to double farmers' income--today, the reality is that the lives of those who feed the nation are being cut in half. This system is killing farmers--quietly, but relentlessly, while Modi ji is busy watching his own PR spectacle." On Wednesday, Gandhi expressed concerns regarding India's increasing reliance on Chinese products, identifying it as a significant threat to the agricultural sector. On X, he cited reports highlighting India's agricultural crisis due to dependency on foreign fertilisers. The report noted India imports 80% of speciality fertilisers from China, with recent supply disruptions affecting farmers significantly. "India is an agrarian country, and the farmer is the backbone of our economy. But today, that very backbone is bending under the weight of foreign dependence. India imports 80% of its speciality fertilisers from China, and now China has halted the supply," he stated. Gandhi highlighted ongoing fertiliser shortages, noting farmers' difficulties accessing urea and DAP. The addition of speciality fertilisers to scarce resources has worsened conditions. "This isn't the first time, farmers across the country are still struggling with shortages of essential fertilisers like urea and DAP, and now a new 'Chinese crisis' looms over speciality fertilisers. On one hand, the Prime Minister is busy printing his photos on fertiliser sacks, while on the other, our farmers are becoming increasingly dependent on "Made in China," Gandhi stated. The Congress MP criticised the government's lack of preparation and domestic production initiatives despite known risks. He emphasised the absence of policies supporting local fertiliser production. "Despite knowing that this supply could be disrupted at any moment, the government made no preparations. When the need of the hour was to promote domestic production, they made no policy, no plan," Gandhi stated. "Will the Indian farmer now be helpless even in his own soil? As precious time and healthy crops are lost, the farmer, drowning in debt and despair, is asking: 'Kiska Sath, Kiska Vikas,'" he concluded.

Rebels in Republican; Trump on edge- When will US president sign his ‘Big Beautiful Bill'?

Donald Trump's signature tax-and-spending package, 'Big Beautiful Bill', was thrown into limbo as Republican leaders in Congress scrambled to rein in party rebels threatening to derail the centerpiece of the president's domestic agenda. Trump is seeking final House approval for the bill after its razor-thin passage in the Senate, but divisions within his own party have left the legislation teetering. Fiscal hawks bristle at ballooning deficits; moderates fear historic cuts to Medicaid and other safety net programs could cost them re-election. Trump vented his frustration on Truth Social saying, "Largest Tax Cuts in History and a Booming Economy vs. Biggest Tax Increase in History, and a Failed Economy. What are the Republicans waiting for??? What are you trying to prove??? MAGA IS NOT HAPPY, AND IT'S COSTING YOU VOTES!!!" House Speaker Mike Johnson, caught between these factions, kept procedural votes open for hours, including one that set a record as the longest in House history, while his team huddled behind closed doors with holdouts. "We're going to get there tonight. We're working on it and very, very positive about our progress," Politico quoted Johnson saying. Meanwhile, Trump turned up the pressure saying, "FOR REPUBLICANS, THIS SHOULD BE AN EASY YES VOTE. RIDICULOUS!!!" Republican leaders had hoped to quickly push Trump's massive tax-and-spending bill through the House on Wednesday, aiming for a smooth approval well ahead of the president's self-imposed July 4 deadline. But their plans hit turbulence as the 887-page legislation, already tweaked in the Senate to appease hardliners, faced resistance from within. One conservative balked at the prospect of adding to the $37 trillion national debt, while two moderates worried about nearly $1 trillion in healthcare cuts that could leave 17 million Americans without insurance and shutter rural hospitals. The sprawling $4.5 trillion package delivers on several of Trump's campaign promises, increased military spending, mass deportation funding, and extended tax cuts from his first term. But it also adds $3.4 trillion to the deficit over a decade and slashes nearly $1 trillion from health care programs, raising alarms about millions losing insurance and rural hospitals shuttering. With House Democrats unified in opposition and eyeing the bill as a potent campaign weapon for 2026, the pressure is squarely on Trump and Republican leaders to unite their fractured caucus and deliver the legislative victory the president demands.

Cong will ban RSS once it comes to power: Priyank Kharge

Bengaluru: After claiming that Congress will ban RSS once it comes to power in the Centre, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge continued attacking the organisation on Wednesday, saying that it is 'cancer' and the BJP's love towards it is 'superficial'. Priyank Kharge, the Minister for RDPR, IT and BT, is the son of AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge. Priyank Kharge stated on Wednesday that, 'Following my remarks regarding a possible ban on the RSS, BJP leaders, including state President B.Y. Vijayendra and MLA V. Sunil Kumar, have been issuing various statements. Let the BJP not forget that there is a cure for the cancer that is RSS - an organisation that threatens national unity, the national anthem, the national flag, and the Constitution - and that cure lies within the Constitution itself.' 'For BJP leaders, defending the RSS is absolutely essential - to safeguard their positions and to secure their political future - because they are all tethered to Nagpur. Even if they dislike it, they are compelled to defend the RSS,' he said. The minister said, 'The BJP's love for the RSS is only superficial - it resides in their throats, not in their hearts. If their admiration were genuine, BJP leaders would be sending their own children to RSS shakhas instead of schools. Not a single BJP leader's child wears RSS shorts and plays with lathis at a shakha. Even the BJP knows that associating their children with the RSS would ruin their futures.' 'If Prime Minister Narendra Modi were to suddenly launch a campaign like 'Selfie with Shakha' for BJP leaders' children, even the RSS would come to know the truth of their loyalty. It would be good if respected Vijayendra and other BJP leaders acknowledged the historical truth that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had banned the RSS, considering it a terrorist organisation,' he claimed. 'Even if one doesn't fear mobs or violence, one must fear the Constitution of this country. Vijayendra, Sunil Kumar -- in this nation, the Constitution is the ultimate authority. My challenge to the BJP: As the RSS prepares to celebrate its centenary, let it list just 10 contributions it has made to the country over the past 100 years,' he challenged. Slamming Priyank Kharge for his statement on the RSS ban, state President Vijayendra stated, 'The Congress party's intolerance, hatred, and frustration toward the RSS will not harm the organisation in any way. Since the time of Nehru, the RSS has firmly withstood Congress' threats and attacks. So what weight do immature individuals like Priyank Kharge carry?'
