Residents, business owners bring mural concerns to Wilkes-Barre City Council
Jun. 13—WILKES-BARRE — City council heard public comments on Thursday night regarding a controversial mural at 93 Blackman Street, which has caused a stir amongst some residents and business owners in the city's Rolling Mill Hill section.
The mural depicts scenes and imagery from the "Terminator" film franchise, including a famous scene from "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." In the film and the mural, the villainous T-1000 wears a uniform that is reminiscent of a typical police uniform.
Linda Joseph, president of the Rolling Mill Hill Residents' Association, spoke about the positive progress that has been made in that section of Wilkes-Barre and offered an alternative mural concept that would have found her approval.
"The paintings — or, as many say, graffiti — recently put on the building at Blackman and Arch streets, definitely isn't what we, as homeowners, want to be the impression of our neighborhood of Rolling Mill Hill," Joseph said. "Personally, I would have loved to have seen a mural there that enhanced the look of the neighborhood and told a story that would show the pride of the area, not just Rolling Mill Hill, but so much history that our city represents."
Joseph gave council members a copy of the City of Pittston's stricter mural ordinance policy in the hopes that something similar could be enacted in Wilkes-Barre.
Laura Mudlock, funeral director and owner of Mamary-Durkin Funeral Home, offered many of the thoughts she previously gave to the Times Leader, and appealed to a spiritual drive to improve the neighborhood's image.
"Let's do something that's going to edify our neighborhood, and not be violent, and not promote violence amongst our children," Mudlock said.
The artists were not represented at Thursday's meeting. However, council Chairman Tony Brooks said he received an email from the artists and suggested that a dialogue be set up between them and the Rolling Mill Hill residents.
Near the end of the council meeting, former Wilkes-Barre Police Chief and Councilman Bill Barrett called for an ordinance to be drafted based on the Pittston ordinance.
"I'm personally offended by what I see there also, especially that drawing of the police officer with the bullet holes," Barrett said, referring to the depiction of the T-1000 character in the mural. He continued: "If we can do something with that ordinance and have something drafted up that we can possibly use, that would be great."
Additional items
Council authorized the following agenda items:
—Authorized Mayor Brown — who was absent from Thursday's meeting — to take any and all necessary actions related to retaining a finance package not to exceed $600,000, under the terms available to fund the emergency repairs recommended to restore the integrity of the line and avoid any necessity of repeated repairs at the 60" culvert located in an area off of Conyngham Avenue.
—Authorized the administration to take any and all necessary actions related to entering a five-year lease/purchase agreement with Community Leasing Partners for a total of $384,815 with an annual payment of $89,231.76 for five new police vehicles. An additional five vehicles will be purchased through the LSA Grant.
—Authorized the proper city officials to take any and all necessary actions related to the following purchases from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Cooperative Purchasing Program; 14 Panasonic Toughbook FZ-55 from Baycom for a purchase price of $52,402; and 14 Havis DS-PAN-432 Docking Stations (installed) from 10-8 Emergency Vehicle Service for a purchase price of $16,553.04,
—Authorized the proper city officials to purchase ArcGIS Velocity program to utilize real-time data integration to enhance public health preparedness and emergency management and to purchase Velocity, an automated program to integrate GPS data for public health advisories and communications in the amount of $52,530 from Environmental Systems Research Institute. The purchase will be funded by a Public Health Emergency Preparedness Grant.

'M3GAN 2.0' Ending, Explained
After two years of laying low, M3GAN is back! And in her 2.0 era, she's better than ever. The AI-powered doll (played by actor duo Amie Donald and Jenna Davis) has received a major upgrade and is now full-equipped to slay anything that gets in the way of her mission. M3GAN's creator and #1 frenemy Gemma (Allison Williams)—who is now an advocate for AI reform—essentially turns M3GAN into a lethal weapon. Although she initially had her reservations, it was clear that they needed to work together in order to destroy a greater evil: a rogue, military-grade, AI humanoid robot called AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno). Though everyone had their doubts about M3GAN making good on her end of the bargain, the movie shows that she's grown in ways beyond her physicality. Though she'll deny it, she's become more empathetic towards humans—especially those closest to her. Her protectiveness of Cady (Violet McGraw) has extended to Gemma, and maybe even Tess (Jen Van Epps) and Cole (Brian Jordan Alvarez) to some degree. This protectiveness, plus a touch of competitiveness and desire to one-up AMELIA, is what fuels her fight throughout the movie. But does M3GAN get to live to slay another day? Let's get into it. Gemma and her crew hatch a plan to break into the Xenox facility and destroy the Black Box AI—a killer AI that AMELIA wants to pair with in order to get rid of humans. Cole was supposed to go in alone and go through the facility's vent system to try and find the Black Box, while M3GAN took out security guards underground. But then M3GAN comes face-to-face with AMELIA and they battle it out Terminator-style. Sadly, our girl gets overpowered by AMELIA's super-advanced, military-grade lethality. Guards then gun her down and capture her. M3GAN gets disconnected from the team, and Gemma panics. She, Cady, and Tess then rush into the building, but his leads ultimately leads to their capture as well. As it turns out, AMELIA isn't a rogue robot. She's been taking orders from someone all along. And that person, the mastermind behind her violent rampage, is none other than Christian (Aristotle Athari). To Gemma, this feels like a betrayal because Christian is her fellow AI reform advocate and budding love interest. As it turns out, he's been using AMELIA to enact heinous crimes to try and convince more people to distrust AI and take tech regulation more seriously. Christian gives Gemma an opportunity to prove her loyalty, to show that that she's still on his side in wanting to limit tech's advancement. He hands her a baton to kill M3GAN, but she ultimately refuses. So Christian decides to put Gemma under his control using a neuro-chip device he had implanted on her. While Christian thinks that Gemma is under his control, he doesn't realize that M3Gan snuck her code into the chip. She communicates with Gemma and helps her snap out of Christian's control. With Gemma in her super exosuit and M3GAN in her brain guiding her through everything, they defeat a battalion of guards and manage to escape. Meanwhile, Cole is able to free Cady and they try to hijack AMELIA's programming to get her to fight on their side. Cady tries to pair with AMELIA, like she did with M3GAN, in the hopes that the robot would become loyal to her and prioritize her commands. But this plan backfires, and AMELIA actually goes rogue, killing everyone in sight. Cady and Gemma eventually reunite as they try to destroy the Black Box, and Cole goes off to rescue Tess. Upon realizing that Gemma has freed herself, and AMELIA is on the loose, Christian prioritizes getting the all-powerful Motherboard out of their reach. But when he spots Gemma and Cady in the control room, he locks them in. Just when he thinks he has the upper hand, karma comes back to bite him. AMELIA gets him and he dies swiftly at the hands of his own evil creation. While Christian is dead, a new problem arises as AMELIA gets her hands on the Motherboard. She becomes a god-tier AI, seemingly unstoppable. But M3GAN jumps from Gemma's consciousness and back into her own battered robot body to put an end to all the bloodshed and chaos. She uses an electromagnetic pulse device that Gemma had implanted into her robot body, which blows up the Motherboard, AMELIA, and herself. And Gemma, Cady, Cole, and Tess manage to escape safely. For those worried that M3GAN's ultimate sacrifice might mean the end of the franchise, fret not. If there's one thing that we know, it's that our girl's got plenty of tricks up her sleeve. Following all the chaotic events, Gemma is back on her grind, advocating for the safe and regulated use of AI. (This time, with Cole and Tess as partners in her venture.) When Gemma gets to work on her computer, Clippy the Microsoft Office assistant pops-up on her screen. She notices, however, that the cartoon paperclip is acting sassier than usual. As it turns out, M3GAN created an animated digital back-up of herself. Looks like M3GAN 3.0 could very well happen!

Drake Hits Back At T-Pain Critiquing His Inability To 'Gracefully Bow Out' & Retire, Social Media Piles On
Drake's always down for a quick Instagram dig at any other artists who discredit him, and the latest to get a response is T-Pain. The Florida crooner was on the Crash Dummies podcast earlier this month, where he talked about his nearly 20-year career since releasing 'Buy U A Drank.' With two decades under his belt, he discusses the possibility of gradually stepping away from the musical limelight and how Drake fits into that around the 30-minute mark. 'One thing I learned from Drake, but one thing he hasn't followed his own words. Drake said, 'I wanna be one of them people that gracefully bow out and not get kicked out,'' T-Pain remembers. T-Pain continues, saying that Drake has become the artist 'he didn't wanna become' because he's constantly pestering his fans with new music. He adds that his view of the 6 God's mindset is 'No, listen, OK, I got another one. Hold on, check this out. Y'all ain't like that one? OK, real quick, just one more. Let me try one more.'' In comparison, T-Pain believes he understands that his influence on music speaks for itself and will continue to release music, albeit under less stressful terms, at his own pace, rather than at the behest of fickle fans. 'Y'all n-ggas don't give a f-ck if I live or die. Why the f-ck would I keep trying to impress y'all? I'm out,' he says of his own train of thought. 'I'm done. I did everything that I'm trying to do. I changed the game. I made a sound. What else?' Drake caught wind of the T-Pain critique via a clip posted to TorontoRappers' Instagram account, responding, 'This guy always had resentment for me [laughing emoji] you can hear it every time he speaks on my name.' The retirement conversation was sparked by a 2023 interview Drake did with Lil Yachty, where he discusses the dangers of addiction to the limelight and the competitive nature of rap that older acts seem to overlook . 'Sometimes it'll baffle you, like why are these people still making attempts at trying to be present in the space? And then you'll realize they probably, their needs and desires and their soul was probably fed for so long off of being a guy, or the guy, that they can't let it go,' Drake said at the time. Instead of becoming the old man at the party, Drake vowed to make an exit on his terms, but made it clear he's not ready now. See socials' reaction to Drake's latest rift with a fellow entertainer below.
