Experts recommend the 'caveman method' for keeping your house cool in a heatwave — here's how it works
When the summer months arrive, we often find ourselves rejoicing at the hot weather. It's time to light the grills, play in the sprinklers and enjoy long days outside. And then, suddenly, it's too hot. As heat waves hit, we find ourselves fervently searching for a solution to cool down — especially, our homes. How will we endure the day? And how, oh how, will we sleep at night? While the sell-out fan of the summer is a great option, there's so much more you can do to help reduce the heat in your home. While my first instinct is to run around the house opening up as many windows as possible, after many years writing about tips and tricks around your home, I know better. In fact, it can actually be the worst thing you can do. But, I've never heard it described like this and I wholeheartedly approve. Introducing door and window expert Joseph Holman, CEO of Green Doors, who explains to keep your home cool, you should "think of it like a cave". What we're aptly calling the "caveman method", is the idea is that we should resort to living like our home is a cave and then, we'll be a lot cooler. Joseph explains the logic behind it: "A cave is cool in heatwaves because it is dark and doesn't have direct sunlight or a direct entrance for the heat. You want to probably mimic that". But, how? Well, while you've instinctively tried to invite a breeze into your home through open windows and doors, you actually want to avoid it. Instead, Holman recommends you keep everything closed for the entire time it's hot. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. "Reduce sunlight and stop the movement of the outside air inside. Even switching off the lights will help you with that". Basically, you should be treating your home like you're hiding in a cave. Keep the warm air outside — and make sure you're not inviting it in. Even if you think the area of your house is shaded and therefore a cooler spot, by opening a window or door, you're still bringing hot air into the house regardless of how much shade is outside. Ultimately, Joseph says, you want to "reduce sunlight and stop the movement of the outside air inside. Even switching off the lights will help you with that". If you've got AC, Joseph adds, you wouldn't be opening doors or windows through fear of letting the cool air out and wasting it. In reverse, if you're not running AC, but you open the doors or windows, you're letting hot air in. This fan is the perfect companion for hot weather. It's portable, rechargeable, can be used indoors or outdoor and comes with a detachable misting tank that'll cool you down even further. In our Shark FlexBreeze review, we said: "It cools you off like a cucumber in a lux grocery store". And with a $50 saving, it's an excellent deal for such a premium product. In the short-term, keeping your windows and doors shut is a great trick for handling a heat wave. And going full caveman will certainly help you when it comes to those hot summer days (and sleepless nights). But, there's long-term methods you also want to consider. For this, Joseph says: "If you want to protect your home from the hat longer term, I would recommend investing in tinted film for windows to reflect the heat, as well as installing integral blinds as a smart way to control the temperature in your home. "You can install integral blinds without changing the doors and windows themsevles, simply by changing the glazing units". Adding: "They are a great space saver and will last longer than external blinds, which can be damaged much more easily". He also recommends modern glass for its superior reflective qualities, as well as roller blind canopies as another excellent option for keeping the direct sunlight away from your doors. I know I'm certainly looking for more ways to cool down my home and rather than waiting for the next heat wave to hit and regretting ignoring Joseph's advice, I think we can all be better prepared.

Hazlewood bowls Aussies to victory in Windies opener
A bowling masterclass from Josh Hazlewood has helped Australia claim a resounding 159-run victory over the West Indies on day three of the Test series opener in Bridgetown. After a hotly contested first two days, Australia dominated on Friday (Saturday morning AEDT) with Hazlewood taking 5-43 as the tourists bowled their hosts out for 141 in their second dig. The Windies were thwarted by a collapse of 6-26 in pursuit of 301 for victory, but were boosted by Australia's frequent tormentor Shamar Joseph who cracked 44 runs off 22 balls - including four sixes - in a furious cameo at No.10. Veteran spinner Nathan Lyon (2-20) struck twice in the final over of the day to seal a win that helped Australia overcome their shock loss in the WTC final and start the three-match series on a high. The tourists are likely to regain the injured Steve Smith for the second Test that begins in Grenada next week after his absence was glaring on a tough batting deck earlier in the match. But Australia posted a competitive second-innings total of 310 on day three thanks largely to middle-order trio Travis Head (61), Beau Webster (63) and Alex Carey (65). In the final session, Hazlewood took all four scalps in a West Indies batting implosion of 4-9 that devastated the hosts' middle order and had the veteran on a hat-trick at one stage. Hazlewood broke the best partnership among the recognised batters, a 43-run stand between Keacy Carty and John Campbell, when Campbell (23) played a daring lap shot straight into Carey's gloves. On Hazlewood's next ball, debutant Brandon King (0) caught a high inside edge to Cameron Green, who made up for dropping a sitter by leaping high at gully. Captain Roston Chase (2) could not replicate a solid first innings, caught from by Sam Konstas at short leg, before Hazlewood bowled the established batter Carty with a ball that seamed in on the tricky pitch. Axed from the XI, Marnus Labuschagne made a valuable contribution as a substitute fielder, whipping a direct hit at the stumps from the other end of the wicket to run Alzarri Joseph (0) out. Hazlewood completed his 13th Test "five-fer" when Jomel Warrican (3) edged to Carey the ball after surviving an lbw review. The end appeared nigh for West Indies when unlikely top-scorer Joseph edged Lyon to Usman Khawaja in the slips. Earlier, No.5 Head (61 off 95 balls) ignited Australia's fightback after the tourists went to stumps on day two in a precarious position at 4-92. Head was trapped lbw by a low delivery from cult hero paceman Joseph (5-87), who was again the West Indies' most important bowler after his match-winning heroics in Brisbane 17 months ago. Showing impressive patience, the usually furious Head had been given a life earlier, spilt by Justin Greaves on 21 as one one of the hosts' seven dropped catches for the match. After bringing up a third Test half-century, towering allrounder Webster (63 off 120) fell to an unfortunate tickle down the leg side as Joseph picked up his third wicket. Carey, displaying some exciting stroke-making, was out caught in the deep by Greaves off Chase - the only Australian wicket that fell to spin for the match. KPCC chief rejects praises, says bypoll result a pointer to 2026
Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC president Sunny Joseph on Friday dismissed the 'Captain-Major' praises that surfaced following the resounding victory of Congress in the Nilambur byelection. "I am just an ordinary soldier," the KPCC president said. Addressing a news conference after the KPCC political affairs committee meeting, Joseph described the Nilambur result as a clear pointer to the 2026 assembly elections. "It is a verdict filled with hope, and one that demands correction from the state govt. The grievances of ASHAs, issues faced by high-range residents and other pressing concerns must be addressed urgently," he said. The KPCC president also launched a scathing attack on the RSS, accusing it of attempting to erase the soul of the Indian republic. Referring to RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale's remarks suggesting the removal of the words 'socialism' and 'secularism' from the Preamble of the Constitution, Joseph said: "This is an effort to dismantle the very foundation of our democracy. The RSS had no role in shaping the Constitution. It was formed through the vision and commitment of leaders like Nehru and Ambedkar, based on thorough debates and global constitutional principles." Joseph emphasised that socialism and secularism were introduced during Indira Gandhi's tenure and remain central to the Constitution's character. "Congress will strongly resist any move to undermine democracy, secularism, socialism, and sovereignty. We call upon all secular citizens to join us in protecting these ideals," the KPCC chief said. Joseph accused governor Rajendra Arlekar of attempting to convert Raj Bhavan into a political platform. "It is highly condemnable that a constitutional institution is being misused for political propaganda. All such attempts must come to an end," he said. On the Nilambur byelection, Joseph reiterated that the Congress had no alliance or discussions with any other party. "This was a result of hard work, unity and grassroots strength. It was team effort that earned public approval. P V Anvar is now a closed chapter," he said. The KPCC political affairs committee formally congratulated voters and party workers for the emphatic win. Joseph noted that the result was a serious setback for the LDF, which has plunged into confusion and internal strife. "The CPM's contradictory statements on its RSS connections exposed deep fissures. Even the CPI assessed the verdict as an expression of public discontent. The govt must read this message and correct its course," he added. The KPCC president said the state govt reduced the PSC into a 'rubber stamp' for backdoor appointments. The KPCC political affairs committee also passed a resolution seeking a full investigation into alleged corruption in national highway construction. Joseph questioned why the state was reluctant to act. "Thousands of crores have been siphoned off with political patronage. Even MPs of ruling front have acknowledged the scam," he said.

KPCC seeks to quash ‘captain' controversy, attributes Nilambur bypoll win to ‘Team UDF'
The Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), which met here on Friday, sought to quell what it termed as media speculation that some leaders had prematurely claimed credit for the Nilambur bypoll victory, irking others in the hierarchy. At a press conference, KPCC president Sunny Joseph dismissed the 'captain controversy'. He attributed the win to teamwork and voter anger against the LDF government. The controversy erupted after some reports attributed the Nilambur victory to the Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan's 'captaincy'. Subsequently, senior leader Ramesh Chennithala observed that the UDF had won several by-elections when he was the Leader of the Opposition. Nevertheless, Mr. Chennithala said the media had not given him the honorific status of a 'captain'. He noted the press appeared to apply double standards. Later, Mr. Satheesan shrugged off the 'captain rank' and attributed the bypoll win to 'Team UDF'. He also praised Mr. Chennithala as a leader in the rank of 'Major'. However, the remarks provided grist to the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) to assail the UDF leadership as faction-driven and squabbling over credit. Mr. Joseph also appeared to stoke speculation that some LDF allies had put out feelers to the Congress, seeking a political accommodation in the UDF ahead of the 2025 local body polls and the 2026 Assembly elections. KC(M) question When asked whether Congress considered wooing back Kerala Congress (Mani) [KC(M)] — a key LDF ally with deep pockets of influence among the Christian community in central Kerala — Mr. Joseph said, 'The UDF is set to expand its base significantly,' he said. Meanwhile, KC(M) chairperson Jose K. Mani told reporters in Kottayam that his party remained an integral part of the LDF. He denied the conjecture that the party's State Secretariat would weigh the possibility of parleying with the UDF on Friday. Mr. Mani refused to comment when asked whether the UDF's willingness to expand its base would give the KC(M) a bargaining tool to demand more local body and Assembly seats from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. The KPCC deemed the ward limitation ahead of the local body polls unscientific. It also accused the government of nepotism in appointments and corruption in the construction of NH-66.

Israeli operations escalate in Gaza and Occupied West Bank
Shafaq News – Gaza/Nablus Israeli forces intensified artillery shelling and demolitions across the Gaza Strip on Friday, targeting areas in Khan Younis and eastern Gaza City, while also expanding raids and settler activity in the Occupied West Bank (OWB), according to Palestinian media reports. The Palestinian Information Center reported that Israeli forces carried out large-scale demolitions of residential buildings in eastern Gaza and detonated three explosive-laden robots near Masoud Street in the Jabalia area, north of the Strip. Separately, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz quoted soldiers as saying that troops had intentionally fired on Palestinians near aid distribution points in Gaza. Health officials at al-Shifa Medical Complex warned the hospital could shut down due to dwindling fuel supplies, exacerbating an already severe humanitarian situation. شاهد |الرضيع أحمد طليب "عمره شهران" استــشهد في غزة؛ جرّاء سوء التغذية الناجم عن المجاعة والحصار 'الإسرائيلي" — المركز الفلسطيني للإعلام (@PalinfoAr) June 27, 2025 According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS), 55,999 people have been killed in Gaza since October 2023, including 18,000 children and 12,400 women. The data also reports the deaths of more than 1,400 medical staff, 219 journalists, 203 UNRWA employees, and 112 civil defense workers. Over 11,000 individuals remain missing. In the Occupied West Bank, tensions escalated in several areas. In Nablus, clashes broke out after dozens of Israeli settlers, escorted by military personnel, entered the eastern part of the city to perform religious rituals at Joseph's Tomb (Yousuf a.s) — a site considered sacred by Jews and located in an area under Palestinian Authority control. Local sources said settlers damaged both public and private property along Jerusalem Street. They later gathered at the tomb under military protection and performed Talmudic rituals, prompting confrontations with residents. قوات الاحتلال تقتحم المنطقة الشرقية في مدينة نابلس — شبكة قدس الإخبارية (@qudsn) June 27, 2025 In East Jerusalem, Israeli groups entered the Western Wall plaza to mark the start of the Hebrew month of Tammuz.
