Huawei Cloud: Enabling the leap to intelligence in Northern Africa with inclusive AI
Huawei Cloud has marked a year of significant growth since the official launch of its Egypt Region in 2024, which established Huawei Cloud as the first public cloud provider in Northern Africa. The past year has seen Huawei Cloud Northern Africa achieve a remarkable 140% growth, foster innovation with over 300 customers and 200 partners, and empower more than 15,000 developers to drive intelligent transformation across the region.
Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population, stated during his speech at the opening of the summit that Egypt has placed great emphasis on investing in information technology, particularly in the establishment of large-scale data centers, with the aim of providing a secure environment for storing and analyzing vast volumes of information.
He explained that the digital infrastructure developed in Egypt over the past years has significantly facilitated data storage and management, especially in sectors such as health and education. He pointed out that the healthcare sector is one of the key beneficiaries due to the volume of medical data, as cloud computing enables secure and efficient storage while linking hospitals and radiology centers.
Dr. Amr Talaat, in a speech delivered on his behalf by Eng. Raafat Hindi, Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology for Infrastructure Development and Digital Transformation, affirmed that in addition to Egypt's digital wealth, it possesses an even more significant asset in its human resources, represented by its youth, entrepreneurs, and innovators. He noted that the state is exerting its utmost efforts to enhance their skills and capabilities, empowering and qualifying them to compete in the job market. He also highlighted the collaboration between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Huawei in implementing several ministry initiatives focused on training young people from various qualifications and age groups.
Dr. Amr Talaat emphasized that this summit aligns with the state's efforts to build a digital Egypt and strengthen its position as a regional hub for innovation and digital transformation, while enhancing its technological infrastructure through partnerships with major global companies. He added that an ambitious strategy is being implemented to bolster Egypt's capabilities in cloud computing by developing a highly efficient computational infrastructure. Additionally, efforts are underway to provide an infrastructure that enables small and medium-sized enterprises and startups to leverage computational capabilities and artificial intelligence tools, relying on data centers located within Egypt.
"The current global AI technology transformation presents great opportunities for leapfrog development in Northern Africa," stated Jacqueline Shi, President of Huawei Cloud Global Marketing and Sales Service, in her keynote speech. "Huawei Cloud is committed to AI-centered innovation. We aim to lower the barrier for enterprises to use AI. We aim to provide you inclusive cloud and AI technologies that are accessible anywhere, highly cost-effective, and enhanced with industry know-how. Recognizing the concurrent opportunities presented by the rapid advancement towards a digital, intelligent, and low-carbon future, Huawei Cloud unveiled its "Five Inclusives" strategy. This comprehensive framework, encompassing inclusive connectivity, government services, education, security, and energy, leverages innovative technologies like cloud and AI to enable a leapfrog development for the region, making technological advancements affordable, accessible, intelligent, and secure to everyone.

Additionally, Huawei Cloud introduced an extensive array of AI-native cloud services such as GaussDB, CodeArts for one-stop DevSecOps, and MetaStudio for digital content production.

Today, their Arabic model spans an impressive 25 dialects, setting new benchmarks in linguistic innovation.
In talent cultivation, Huawei Cloud has forged partnerships with the IT Industry Development Agency (ITIDA), National Telecommunication Institute (NTI), Information Technology Institute (ITI), and leading universities in Egypt. At today's Summit, a new program "Egypt Developers Community Appointment" was launched, which integrates cutting-edge knowledge in AI, cloud computing, 5G, and big data into university curricula, while offering training in soft skills and freelancing basics, thereby expanding career pathways for participants. A prime example of these talent efforts is Manetho, the champion of the Huawei Developer Competition Egypt 2024, whose AI-powered hieroglyphics translation app has significantly grown its user base, media exposure, and revenue after they won the competition. Manetho's app is currently in use at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and is slated for deployment at the Grand Egyptian Museum.

UAE delivers $1.5bn in aid to Gaza as relief efforts continue
The UAE has delivered more than $1.5 billion in critical humanitarian support to Gaza since the start of the war with Israel, authorities revealed on Friday. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs set out the scale of the country's commitment to the besieged enclave and pledged to continue to deliver key support amid 'continuing catastrophic conditions'. In a message on social media, the ministry said the Emirates provided more support to Gaza than any other country, according to the Financial Tracking Service of the United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The assistance includes providing medical support to 72,280 patients at hospitals in the UAE and the floating hospital in Al Arish, Egypt. More than 78,000 tonnes of aid have also been distributed to Gaza in partnership with international organisations. "The UAE continues to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, working to ease the severe suffering amid continuing catastrophic conditions," the ministry said. "As part of its steadfast humanitarian commitment, the UAE has delivered medical and relief aid to the Strip through all available means, by land, sea, and air, in addition to providing over $1.5 billion in financial assistance. "The UAE has also received hundreds of wounded and injured individuals for medical treatment in its hospitals. "These efforts reflect the UAE's enduring commitment to supporting the brotherly Palestinian people, and the country remains firmly dedicated to continuing its support for all those in need." Show of solidarity A UAE aid ship carrying 7,166 tonnes of supplies for Gaza left Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi on July 21. The Khalifa is heading to Al Arish Port in Egypt laden with 4,372 tonnes of food, 1,433 tonnes of shelter materials, 860 tonnes of medical supplies and 501 tonnes of health supplies, state news agency Wam reported. It is the largest aid vessel to be sent by the Emirates and comes as part of Operation Gallant Knight 3. It brings the total volume of aid sent by the UAE to Gaza to 77,266 tonnes. The ship is also carrying a fully equipped field hospital that can accommodate 400 patients and 16 ambulances, Hamoud Al Efari, the UAE Aid mission's co-ordinator, told The National. The UAE on Sunday resumed air drop aid missions to the Gaza Strip, in partnership with Jordan. The country's leadership has consistently stressed the need to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, improve the flow of aid into the territory and to pursue peace based on a two state solution. President Sheikh Mohamed on Wednesday held a phone call with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding the worsening humanitarian crisis. The UAE leader praised Mr Starmer's statements regarding Britain's intention to recognise the Palestinian state. At least 60,249 Palestinians have been killed and 147,089 wounded since the war with Israel began in October 2023, according to the Hamas-run Gazan health ministry.

Telefonica phases out Huawei gear from its networks
In order to align with regulatory requirements restricting the use of Huawei gear in core infrastructure, Telefonica plans to phase out the equipment from its 5G networks in Spain and Germany. Telefonica COO Emilio Gayo told Reuters the operator is 'reducing our exposure to Huawei' in both countries, where governments have mandated the phase-out of the Chinese vendor's equipment from 5G core networks due to national security concerns. In the UK, where a similar ban is in place, Gayo added that Telefonica's exposure to Huawei is already 'very, very low'. However, the operator confirmed it will continue using Huawei equipment in Brazil and other Latin American markets, where no such restrictions are in place. Reuters reported that Telefonica CEO Marc Murtra emphasised that equipment from all suppliers is subject to strict internal standards, ensuring security for the company and its customers. Huawei has faced restrictions across European markets for a numbers of years, with governments citing national security risks. However, Spain did recently award a €12 million wiretap contract to Huawei, which was met with a warning from the European Commission. According to The Financial Times, the European watchdog warned that Huawei 'represents materially higher risks' than other suppliers. However, a Huawei spokesperson told Mobile World Live that all of its products in Spain 'fully comply with local laws, regulations, and applicable product admission criteria and standards'. Regarding the wiretap equipment in question, OceanStor Dorado, the company stated it is 'a common flash storage hardware' that adheres to Spain's National Security Scheme and ICT security guidelines. 'Huawei has no access to customer data, all the information stored in hardware belongs to and is at the exclusive disposal of the customer', the spokesperson added.
