Stella or stellar? Antioch's Dohrmann is both, shutting out Prairie Ridge for 7 innings in a supersectional.
Dohrmann has found her place, to say the least. She started in the circle for the Sequoits in the Class 3A Kaneland Supersectional in Maple Park on Monday.
'Going from JV to varsity, I was really proud of myself,' she said. 'I just knew I had to work really hard to prove myself and earn a spot.'
Dohrmann showed what she can do against Prairie Ridge, throwing seven scoreless innings. But the Wolves scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Antioch freshman Addison Osborne in the eighth inning to pull out a 1-0 victory.
The Sequoits (24-14) fell short of a fourth consecutive trip to the state semifinals. Indiana recruit Reese Mosolino kept their bats silent for most of the game to lead Prairie Ridge (28-1-1). Junior shortstop Claire Schulyer, a Minnesota recruit, had the only two hits, both infield singles, for Antioch.
But Dohrmann impressed Mosolino.
'I could tell she has a lot of potential,' Mosolino said.
Dohrmann (6-4), who allowed seven hits and walked four, nearly matched Mosolino to keep the Sequoits in the game. Dohrmann said her drop curve and curveball were her two main pitches.
'When those two pitches are on, I know I'm going to have a good day, and I had a good day today,' she said.
With runners on second and third in the top of the seventh, Dohrmann dug deep to force a groundout to keep the game scoreless.
'Stella hung in there and did a great job,' Antioch coach Anthony Rocco said. 'She kept them off balance and got out of several jams.'
The Wolves benefited from a one-out error in the eighth, and Bella Moore and Autumn Ledgerwood followed with singles to load the bases.
Rocco decided to bring in Osborne, who induced a pop-up for the second out. After the wild pitch, Osborne closed out the inning with a strikeout. But Mosolino retired the Sequoits in order to send the Wolves to the state semifinals.
Even with tears in her eyes, Dohrmann expressed confidence about the future.
'I'm very excited for the next few years because I know we're going to have the bats again and more pitchers coming in,' she said.
Of course, the Sequoits will also have Dohrmann, who finished with a 3.40 ERA in 67 1/3 innings. Rocco said she has come a long way since the start of the season, when the team was searching for a go-to pitcher following the graduation of four-year ace Jacey Schuler, who is a freshman at Michigan State.
'Stella didn't know what her role would be this year,' Rocco said. 'She gives us something a little different than our other pitchers. She panned out for us.'
Antioch junior catcher Addie Webb, a Bradley commit, noted Dohrmann's improvement over the course of the season.
'She has progressively gotten a lot better,' Webb said. 'I think her mentality got a lot better after being timid at first. It clicked for her.'
Antioch junior first baseman Sam Hillner said Dohrmann was particularly good at the end of the season.
'The past two games she had a different look and has been locked in,' Hillner said.

Parker happy with Clarets' progress after Wolves draw
Jacob Bruun Larsen was on target as Burnley drew 1-1 against Wolves in a pre-season training game in the Algarve on Saturday. Burnley named almost entirely different XIs for each half, providing minutes to the majority of the squad. In a tight first period, the Clarets went close to opening the scoring in the 19th minute. Jaydon Banel's close-range shot was parried at the second attempt by Sam Johnstone in the Wolves goal, following fine build-up play involving Kyle Walker and Luca Koleosho. The deadlock was eventually broken five minutes before the break, with Jorgen Strand Larsen finishing for Wolves from close range. As expected, Burnley made wholesale changes at half time, and the Clarets were level on 65 minutes, when Quilindschy Hartman's header at the far post was half-volleyed home by Bruun Larsen. The Clarets are now back in the UK following a productive week in the Portuguese sunshine. And boss Scott Parker is pleased with the Clarets' progression. 'It was another step in the right direction for us,' Parker told the club's website. 'To be fair to the lads, it's been a tough week, a really full-on week, so I was really pleased with the general performance. 'We're nudging along in the right direction, there were some really positive bits, so it was really pleasing overall. 'It's been a good week, I think we've found a really good balance, between working hard - that's been very evident - and socialising together as a team, which is vitally important, too. 'We've spent some nice time together - I always say this group is as tight as anything, it's a great environment to work in. 'Camps like this are long, you have to fill time, and we've done that in a really good way. 'There's a togetherness amongst the squad - it was vitally important last year, and it will be this season too. 'That brotherhood, that bond - it's so crucial. 'The boys will have a bit of time off to recover over the next few days, but we will be right back at it come Tuesday.'

EA Sports immortalizes Diogo Jota after removing Liverpool hero from EAFC 25 game
Tributes to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva continue to pour in. The Liverpool man was also an avid player of EAFC (formerly FIFA), and makers EA Sports have become the latest to pay their respects following the brothers' shock passing. If there is one remotely positive thing to come out of the tragedy, it is a reminder of the impact that Diogo and Andre had on so many, as has been made apparent by the mass outpouring of grief from all over the world. Part of the massive legacy that Jota leaves behind is his own eSports team, Luna Galaxy. He personally was just as talented on the virtual pitch as the real one, winning a Premier League FIFA tournament back in 2020; he beat Trent Alexander-Arnold in the final. He was also at one point the top-ranked player in FUT Champions, a competitive game mode within Ultimate Team. Having initially removed his Ultimate Team card from the EAFC 25 game, as is standard practice when an active player passes away, the makers of the game have since put together a poignant gesture. Every player of FC25 Ultimate Team has been sent a special tifo pack. It contains his No. 18 jersey from his time at Wolves, his No. 19 jersey from Porto, and his No. 20 jersey from Liverpool. Liverpool, meanwhile, has taken the decision to retire the No. 20 jersey. Jota is now listed under his own "forever" section on the club's squad list. Players can choose to display the tifos in-game as a virtual tribute to Jota. "To honor and celebrate the life of one of our most passionate FC players, three new Diogo Jota Tifos have been added to your UT Club," EA Sports wrote to its players. The message was headlined "one of us". It isn't the first eSports-related tribute Jota has received. Among the moving scenes of tributes laid outside Anfield, various gaming controllers were left. Like Liverpool, both Porto and Wolves have also marked Jota's passing in their own ways. Molineux was also flooded with tributes, with the flowers now set to be turned into colored ink to form part of a more permanent memento. Meanwhile, Wolves also enrolled Jota into the club's Hall of Fame. Made up of historic players and teams from the club's past, he is one of fewer than 40 members, and the first addition in more than two years. Porto will honor Jota at an upcoming friendly with Atletico Madrid. The forward actually represented both clubs, although he never played competitively for the Spanish side. Around the world, players have also been paying personal tributes by emulating Jota's "gaming" celebration. They sit down and mime holding a controller, as Jota would do on occasion. Darwin Nunez and Ousmane Dembele have both paid their respect in this fashion, as have others. Like the EA Sports tribute, it's a fitting touch to honor someone who was genuinely elite in two separate fields.

Manchester United: Five wantaway stars excused from preseason training to secure transfer moves
Manchester United players have been excused from preseason training as they look for new clubs. Ruben Amorim's squad will reunite on Monday to prepare for their five-match preseason tour, which will be see them travel to the United States and Sweden. Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrell Malacia, however, are not expected to report to training. The five are all expected to leave the club this summer and have been given permission to join up late as they chase moves away from Old Trafford. Amorim is working on a thorough squad overhaul this summer. He has already added Wolves forward Matheus Cunha to the side, and is also close to adding Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo. It was today confirmed that Cunha would don the No10 shirt in his debut campaign with United, a move seen as writing on the wall for the shirt's previous owner, Rashford. The Briton is reportedly planning to train on Monday despite being excused. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa after being dropped by Amorim, and is hoping to join a Champions League outfit this summer. He has reportedly drawn interest from both Barcelona and Bayern Munich, though United are yet to receive an offer. The wing pairing of Sancho and Antony spent last season on loan at Chelsea and Real Betis, respectively, and met in the Conference League final. Both are now looking for a permanent home. Malacia was deployed to the Netherlands for a six-month stay with PSV Eindhoven, making eight league appearances as the club became Eredivisie champions. Standard Sport had previously reported that, should they fail to agree a move in time, Rashford, Sancho, Garnacho, and Antony would not travel to the United States with the rest of the squad, set instead for solo training at Carrington. United will open their preseason campaign against Leeds in Sweden before facing West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton in the United States as part of the PL Summer Series. They will then face Fiorentina at Old Trafford in their final warm-up tie.
