Ajit Pawar condemns violence after NCP workers thrash Chhava Sanghatna activists over Manikrao Kokate video

Indian Express2 days ago
A day after workers of the ruling Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) beat up activists of Chhava Sanghatna, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP president Ajit Pawar on Monday condemned the incident. The Chhava Sanghatna, which primarily represents Maratha youth, often raises issues related to farmers and agriculture.
'The incident that took place yesterday in Latur between office-bearers of the NCP and the Chhava Sanghatna is very serious, unfortunate, and condemnable. I strongly oppose any kind of violence, rude behaviour or unparliamentary language. We sincerely respect the just demands and feelings of every section of the society,' Ajit Pawar said.
He added that the NCP's identity is based on the ideas of democracy, equality and fraternity of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Shahu Maharaj, Mahatma Phule and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. 'I would like to clearly state to all my colleagues and activists: always prioritise the values of democracy, peace, and non-violence while working in social life,' he said.
On Sunday, NCP state youth president Suraj Chavan and other local office-bearers of the party assaulted Vijaykumar Ghadge and others of the Chhava Sanghatna at the government guest house in Latur. Ghadge and others had earlier submitted a letter of protest to NCP state president Sunil Tatkare against party leader and Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate after a video allegedly showed Kokate playing the card game Rummy inside the Legislative Council. The workers also gifted a pack of cards to Tatkare as a mark of protest.
Later, alleging that Ghadge and others used unparliamentary language against NCP leaders, Chavan and other workers thrashed them in front of cameras and the police. On Monday morning, Chavan released a video statement apologising for his behaviour.
'We did not beat him for raising farmers' issues but for using unparliamentary language against our leaders. I apologise for the actions and I will personally meet Vijay Ghadge and clear the misunderstanding,' he said.
Meanwhile, Chavan has been asked not to attend Tatkare's programmes in neighbouring Dharashiv district on Monday, anticipating a strong reaction from Chhava Sanghatna and other organisations.

Agri minister Manikrao Kokate seeks inquiry into card playing allegations, says will resign if found guilty

Nashik/Pune: State agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate on Tuesday again dismissed the allegations that he was "playing an online game of cards" on his cellphone during a state assembly session and said he was ready to face an inquiry. NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar, however, claimed that the minister was lying and shared a video of the minister, along with the audio from the session. He insisted that Kokate resign before facing a probe. Kokate, who was in Nashik on Tuesday, said he would seek an inquiry into a video released by his political rivals and tender his resignation if found guilty during the winter session. Kokate also announced his intention to sue all those trying to defame him. When reporters brought up the opposition's demand, Kokate asked: "What should I give my resignation for? Have I committed any crime?" "I am going to write to the chief minister, deputy chief minister, the chairperson of the legislative council, and the Speaker of the assembly to conduct an inquiry into the episode and make public the report during the next winter session. If found guilty, I will tender my resignation to the Governor without even meeting the chief minister or the deputy chief minister," Kokate said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Up to 70% off | Libas Purple Days Sale Libas Undo He further said when he goes to Mumbai next week, he would contact his lawyers, issue notices to all politicians involved in defaming him, and file a defamation suit. "I have been in the House for over 25 years and would never indulge in acts that violate the norms. I have already clarified that when I wanted some updates on my cellphone, I opened it only to encounter a pop-up advertisement of the online game. I struggled to skip the advertisement despite attempting multiple times. There is a complete video, and it is longer than 17 seconds. It reveals the truth, as I was able to skip the advertisement after multiple attempts. I will, therefore, seek the call records of the politicians engaged in the act and file defamation cases against them," said Kokate. When asked about chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's statement that playing cards in the House was inappropriate, Kokate said, "Currently, I have neither briefed the CM (Devendra Fadnavis) nor the deputy CM (Ajit Pawar) on the issue. The CM's statement might have been based on the media reports." Does Not Take 42 Seconds To Skip Advertisement: Rohit Pawar A few days ago, Rohit Pawar had uploaded a video of Kokate without the background audio on his X handle. When Kokate claimed on Tuesday that he was surfing on his cellphone when there was no discussion going on in the assembly, the Karjat-Jamkhed MLA reposted it with the audio on the same social media platform. "Respecting the assembly's decorum, I first posted the video without the audio. However, since the state agriculture minister is lying, I had to repost it with the background audio. He was seen playing the game of cards on his cellphone while issues about a tribal community were being discussed in the assembly," Rohit said on X. He reiterated it while speaking to reporters in Karjat Jamkhed on Tuesday. Countering Kokate's claim that he was surfing on his cellphone when the advertisement of the online game popped up and he was skipping it, Rohit said, "It does not take 42 seconds to skip an advertisement. If the minister says that he will face a probe, he should resign and then appear for the inquiry." The MLA said that farmers expected much from the state govt, but the agriculture minister has been making controversial statements about them in the last four years. "When the farming community needs support, he is playing a game of cards. Such politicians should not hold a cabinet minister's post," Rohit Pawar added.

CM Fadnavis brands agri minister Kokate's ‘govt is beggar' comment inappropriate

1 2 3 4 Nashik: On Tuesday, state agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate referred to govt as a "beggar" while addressing the media in Nashik, igniting a fresh controversy. Kokate, who represents Nashik's Sinnar assembly constituency, was questioned about his previous remarks suggesting that even beggars do not accept Re 1 in alms and that govt provides crop insurance for that amount. He clarified, "Govt doesn't give Re 1 to the farmers, it takes Re 1 from them for crop insurance. So who is the beggar here? Govt is a beggar, and not the farmer. My statement was misconstrued then by the people." Kokate said he played a key role in rejecting more than 5.3 lakh bogus applications under the Re 1 crop insurance scheme, which govt has now abolished and replaced with the Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis called Kokate's comments "inappropriate." Speaking in Gadchiroli, Fadnavis said, "If he has made such a comment, it is inappropriate for ministers to speak in this manner. We have taken corrective measures in the crop insurance scheme as we saw insurance companies benefitting and not farmers." Fadnavis added, "We have taken steps to invest Rs 5,000 crore every year in the agriculture sector. " NCP (SP) MP and party's working president Supriya Sule, in a post on X, condemned Kokate's remarks, saying that calling the state govt a "beggar" was an act of insensitivity. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 most beautiful women in the world Undo "It took the supreme sacrifice by 105 martyrs in the struggle for United Maharashtra and immense contribution by previous chief ministers and the people of the state to make Maharashtra the most prosperous state in the country. Sule further added, "There has never been an agriculture minister who behaved so insensitively towards farmers when there are so many burning issues. The portfolio should be handled by someone sensitive towards agriculture and farmers." Congress, meanwhile, questioned whether chief minister Fadnavis lacked the courage to dismiss a cabinet minister who jeopardised the rich political tradition and culture of the state. Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Harshvardhan Sapkal asked, "The ministers in Fadnavis's cabinet seem like a collection of rare specimens — each one a 'gem' in his own way. A minister like Kokate should not be retained in the office even for a moment. Does Fadnavis lack courage to sack Kokate?"

Shiv Sena UBT leader arrested in rape case, party suspects political conspiracy

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief in Maharashtra's Ahilyanagar district, Kiran Kale, was arrested on rape charges, sparking a political storm, with the party alleging a conspiracy behind the timing of the arrest, as Mr. Kale recently exposed an alleged ₹400-crore scam in civic road projects. Mr. Kale was arrested after midnight and booked under sections related to rape under BNS. 'The woman filed rape cases citing several incidents, with the prominent one being in 2023. We have received a four-day police custody of him to investigate the case from all angles,' Superintendent of Ahilyanagar Somnath Gharge told The Hindu. The 21-year-old woman from Karjat filed a complaint on Monday at the Kotwali police station in Ahilyanagar. In the complaint, she claimed that Mr. Kale sexually assaulted her between 2023 and 2024 on the pretext of offering help with her marital disputes. The complaint has raised suspicions among the Opposition party as the arrest occurred days after Mr. Kale made headlines by alleging irregularities in civic road works within the city, involving rival NCP leaders. He accused Ahilyanagar Municipal Corporation of corruption amounting to ₹400 crore, involving 776 road works. He reportedly also presented evidence suggesting embezzlement of public funds. Shiv Sena (UBT) has demanded an investigation as they claim that this is a 'conspiracy' to falsely implicate Mr. Kale. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut defended Mr. Kale and said, 'Eight days back, he revealed the road scam and IT park fraud associated with NCP MLA Sangram Jagtap, along with the evidence. All government is doing is charging him with false cases to suppress his voice.' Mr. Raut asked Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis whether the Opposition has no right to protest or oppose the wrongdoings of the government, and what kind of law is this, saying Sangram Jagtap tried to frame our former Mayor as well. Condemning the arrest, NCP- SP Ahilyanagar MP Nilesh Lanke said, 'Using political dictatorship to shut out people who are bringing scams of municipalities in the public domain, then this is not right. I request that the police administration should verify before taking complaints, and not succumb to political pressure. Meanwhile, MLA Sangram Jagtap, speaking to The Hindu, has dismissed all the allegations and called it a political gimmick ahead of local body elections. 'These claims have no substance. Does Ahilyanagar's Municipal corporation even have so much funds for road concretisation?' said Mr. Jagtap, saying he has nothing to do with Mr. Kale.
