The Story Behind Ice Cube's Iconic World Series Walkout: 'A dream come true'
They dropped consecutive World Series to the New York Yankees in 1977 and 1978. But, three years later, they got their revenge and beat the Yankees in 1981. Ice Cube remembers those years vividly — how Yankees' slugger Reggie Jackson's home runs "broke his heart", and the joy he experienced when the Dodgers finally got the best of the Yankees.
So, he was elated when, 33 years later the Dodgers and Yankees met again in the 2024 Fall Classic.
"Here we go again," Ice Cube said, while appearing on the fourth episode of Keyshawn Johnson's limited series "LA Legends," "The two most iconic teams playing in the World Series."
Ice Cube, simply, was just excited to be a fan, and rekindle his inner-child by rooting for the Dodgers to beat the Yankees like he did in 1981.
"I never knew I was going to be a part of it at all," he said.
But, then the phone rang, and the Dodgers asked him if he wanted to bring the team out before Game 1 at Dodger Stadium.
His response: "I was like, 'Man, that's a dream come true.'"
Ice Cube's appearance was delayed to Game 2 after the Dodgers honored legendary pitcher Fernando Valenzuela, who passed away three days prior to the start of the World Series, ahead of Game 1.
Ice Cube said he was happy help out the Dodgers whenever it was convenient for them. When the opportunity came to do it before Game 2, Ice Cube came out in front of the right field fence at Dodger Stadium, in his retro Dodgers jacket, and strutted toward the infield performing "It Was a Good Day."
As Ice Cube sang, the Dodgers' players bobbed to the music in the dugout. Manager Dave Roberts was seen singing along to the song. Ice Cube emphasized the performance by screaming "It's time for Dodgers' baseball", while standing in the batter's box, then swinging the microphone like a baseball bat, before dropping it on the plate and walking away. The performance got the Dodgers in the zone, as they followed it with a dazzling one of their own, beating the Yankees 4-2 in Game 2 to take a 2-0 series lead.
Ice Cube's involvement was so successful that, after the Dodgers won the World Series, they asked him back to perform at the championship parade.
This time, he came out in a Dodgers' jersey with the No. 24 on the back to honor the late Kobe Bryant. As he was performing, a special guest joined him on the field, catching Ice Cube by surprise.
"I felt something bump against me and I looked back, and I'm thinking 'Damn, some groundskeeping dude got too excited and jumped up here,' and then I looked, and I'm like, 'Damn, that's the skipper, that's the coach.'"
Out of nowhere, Roberts was dancing alongside Ice Cube.
"It was cool," Ice Cube said. "If we win again, he could jump up again, and we could rock it again."
The Dodgers (56-38) have every opportunity to defend their title this season, and celebrate with Ice Cube again. But, they're currently in the middle of a six-game losing streak. In fact, they might need Ice Cube to make a pre-mature return, and spark his hometown team for a second-half surge.

Released Yankees Hurler Has One-Word Closing Remark For New York
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. It sure was an unceremonious ending for Marcus Stroman with the New York Yankees. With two months to go on his two-year, $37 million contract, Stroman was released by the Yankees on Friday. The Yankees will eat the final $6 million on the deal, and the righty will have the ability to sign with any team of his choice for the stretch run. Stroman was brought to New York to be the steady No. 3 starter he was for two years on the Chicago Cubs. But he never developed any consistency, compiling a 4.69 ERA in 39 outings as a Yankee. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 25: Marcus Stroman #0 of the New York Yankees looks on against the New York Mets at Citi Field on June 25, 2024 in New York City. The Mets... NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 25: Marcus Stroman #0 of the New York Yankees looks on against the New York Mets at Citi Field on June 25, 2024 in New York City. The Mets defeated the Yankees 9-7. MoreBeing dumped by a team with playoff hopes in the middle of the season is never fun, though, and Stroman didn't have much in the way of sentiment for a goodbye to the Bronx Bombers. On Friday, as the Yankees were battling the Miami Marlins in an eventual 13-12 loss, Stroman posted an Instagram story of the inside of a private plane, with the one-word caption, "Adios." It was a brief parting message, and one appropriate for the situation. Though Stroman never got off the ground in New York, he's had an excellent career to this point, posting a 3.79 ERA over 270 total appearances and making two All-Star Games, one with the Toronto Blue Jays and one with the Cubs. Stroman is only 34, but his stuff took a big step back in the first half of this season, so he'll have to prove it was just a blip on the radar to keep his career going for a few more years to come. Phillies hoping Jhoan Duran's 100 mph fastball and Harrison Bader's defense lead to a World Series
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Harrison Bader got a first-hand look at Jhoan Duran's electric stuff — try a four-seam fastball that averages 100.2 mph — in their short stint together in Minnesota. Bader saw enough to know the Phillies might have finally landed the closer that can put them over the top and win the franchise's first World Series title since 2008. 'Plain and simple, he has close-the-door stuff,' Bader said. 'Tough situation, runner on, maybe baseball happens, he kind of puts a couple runners on. He's got strikeout stuff to strike out three in a row. I've seen it all year. I've seen it on the other side.' Bader and Duran both made their Phillies' debuts in Friday's 5-4 comeback win against the Detroit Tigers. Bader, a right-handed hitting outfielder, and Duran were both acquired on consecutive days in separate trades with the Minnesota Twins. They are now thrust into the thick of a pennant race. Duran's role is settled. He's the closer — the Phillies tested out his fire entrance on the big screen ahead of his debut. The 27-year-old Duran — nicknamed Durantulla and he wore spider cleats on Friday — had 16 saves and a 2.01 ERA in 49 appearances this season, striking out 53 in 49 1/3 innings with the Twins. With former WWE star The Undertaker's gong setting the soundtrack, Duran entered with only iPhone lights on in the darkened ballpark and flames on the big screen to create the dramatic mood. Duran did the rest in his first appearance since his trade-deadline acquisition from Minnesota. He retired the side in order in the ninth inning — on four pitches — for his 17th save. Duran threw four splinkers, a hybrid pitch that's more of a splitter thrown with more velocity. 'It's an honor to be part of this team,' Duran said. 'I know here I've got a chance to win the World Series.' The 31-year-old Bader, a 2021 Gold Glove winner, remains a strong defender at all three outfield spots and has 12 home runs, 38 RBIs and a .778 OPS in 96 games. The right-handed hitting Bader will start his Phillies career in a center field platoon with Brandon Marsh. The left-handed hitting Marsh got the start Friday against Tigers righty Jack Flaherty. Phillies manager Rob Thomson said he planned a double-platoon in the outfield (slugger Nick Castellanos is entrenched in right field). Because the Phillies are scheduled to face alternating right- and left-handed pitchers over the next six games with Detroit and Baltimore, Bader and Marsh will platoon over that stretch. Same with lefty-swinging Max Kepler and Otto Kemp in left field. How well they hit over that small sample size could decide Thomson's lineup for the pennant stretch as the Phillies chase the New York Mets in the NL East. Thomson said he hadn't ruled out Bader in left field, 'but I see him sort of as the best center fielder we've got.' Bader drew a pinch-hit walk and scored a run and stayed in the game and struck out in his debut. Duran's 100.2 mph average velocity for his four-seam fastball is second to Mason Miller's 101.1 mph among those who have thrown 200 or more pitches. Duran isn't eligible for free agency until after the 2027 season. Duran joins a Philly bullpen that also has Matt Strahm and Orion Kerkering. David Robertson is ramping up with Triple-A Lehigh Valley after signing a one-year contract on July 21, and José Alvarado is expected to return from an 80-game suspension for a positive test for external testosterone. Duran was acquired by Minnesota in a deal with Arizona at the 2018 trade deadline. He is 17-23 with a 2.47 ERA and 74 saves in 223 career games. The Phillies also sent outfielder Johan Rojas (one home run and 18 RBI in 172 plate appearances) to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. ___ AP MLB:
