Son of Mexico's 'El Chapo' pleads guilty in US drugs case: report
NEW YORK (AFP)A son of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman pleaded guilty to narcotics charges in a Chicago court Friday, US media said, part of a deal he struck with prosecutors in return for a reduced sentence.Nicknamed "El Raton," or "The Mouse," Ovidio Guzman signed a deal dated June 30 indicating he would enter a guilty plea to avoid a jury trial and a potentially harsher sentence had he been convicted.The guilty plea was formalised during a hearing in a Chicago court after months of negotiation with the justice department -- the first time one of El Chapo's sons has inked a deal with prosecutors.Ovidio Guzman, 35, is accused of conspiring in a continuing criminal enterprise, importing and distributing fentanyl, laundering money, and using firearms.His formal guilty plea, reported by the local CBS2 broadcaster, will likely result in a far shorter prison term than the life sentence given to his father El Chapo following a high-profile trial held in 2018.He could offer US authorities "valuable information" about the cartel and its protectors, Mike Vigil, former head of operations for the Drug Enforcement Administration, told AFP.His lawyers and prosecutors did not respond to requests for comment.Ovidio Guzman gained prominence in October 2019 when Mexican authorities detained him -- only to release him later on orders from then president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador amid a standoff between law enforcement and gang members.Ovidio Guzman was recaptured in January 2023, while Lopez Obrador was still in office, and later extradited to the United States.US authorities accuse Ovidio and his three brothers of leading Los Chapitos, a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel designated by the administration of US President Donald Trump as a global "terrorist" organization.His father, one of the world's most infamous drug traffickers, is serving a life sentence in a US prison.The United States alleges Ovidio Guzman and his associates trafficked fentanyl into the country, where the opioid epidemic is linked to tens of thousands of deaths.The Sinaloa cartel is one of six Mexican drug trafficking groups that Trump has designated as terrorist organizations.Another son, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, was arrested after arriving in the United States last July on a private plane with cartel co-founder Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, who claimed he had been kidnapped.The arrests sparked cartel infighting that has left more than 1,200 people dead and 1,400 missing in Sinaloa state, located in northwestern Mexico.
In its aggressive policy against drug cartels, the Trump administration announced additional sanctions against Los Chapitos in June for fentanyl trafficking and increased the reward to $10 million for each of the fugitive brothers.

The UN has warned that mass displacement in the occupied West Bank had hit levels not seen since the start of Israel's occupation of the territory nearly 60 years ago. It said an Israeli military operation launched in the north of the occupied West Bank in January had forcibly displaced tens of thousands of people, raising concerns of ethnic cleansing. The military operation "has been the longest since... the second Intifada", in the early 2000s, said Juliette Touma, spokesperson for Unrwa, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. "It is impacting several refugee camps in the area, and it is causing the largest population displacement of the Palestinians in the West Bank since 1967," she told reporters. The UN human rights office meanwhile warned that mass forced displacement by an occupation force could amount to ethnic cleansing. Since the Israeli military launched its operation in January, dubbed "Iron Wall", rights office spokesperson Thameen al-Kheetan said that "about 30,000 Palestinians remain forcibly displaced" had been displaced from the northern West Bank. Israeli security forces had during the same period issued demolition orders for about 1,400 homes in the northern West Bank, he said, describing the figures as "alarming". He pointed out that Israeli demolitions had displaced 2,907 Palestinians across the West Bank since October 2023. Another 2,400 Palestinians - nearly half of them children - had been displaced as a result of Israeli settler actions, he added, stating that the combined result was "emptying large parts of the West Bank of Palestinians". "Permanently displacing the civilian population within occupied territory amounts to unlawful transfer," Kheetan said. Kheetan said 757 attacks by Israeli settlers had been recorded in the West Bank during the first half of the year, a 13 percent increase on the same period last year. The attacks injured 96 Palestinians in June alone, he told reporters, adding that this was the highest monthly injury toll of Palestinians from Israeli settler attacks in over two decades. Since October 2023, at least 964 Palestinians have been killed in the occupied West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem, according to the UN. Israel strikes military tanks in Syria, where government forces clash with Druze militias
Israel's army said on Monday it struck military tanks in southern Syria, where government forces and Bedouin tribes clashed with Druze militias in the latest escalation in the Middle East country struggling for stability after a 13-year civil war. Dozens of people have been killed in the fighting between local militias and clans in Syria's Sweida province. Government security forces that were sent to restore order on Monday also clashed with local armed groups. Syria's Interior Ministry has said more than 30 people have died and nearly 100 others have been injured. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor, reported at least 99 dead, including two children, two women and 14 members of the security forces. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a statement that the Israeli military "attacked targets in Syria as a message and a clear warning to the Syrian regime -- we will not allow harm to the Druze in Syria.' In Israel, the Druze are seen as a loyal minority and often serve in the armed forces. While many Druze in Syria have said they do not want Israel to intervene on their behalf, factions from the Druze minority have also been suspicious of the new authorities in Damascus after former President Bashar Assad fled the country in December during a rebel offensive led by Sunni Islamist insurgent groups.
