Kota Kinabalu: A businessman with the title 'Datuk' has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly soliciting RM6,000 from an individual to obtain a Pahang state award. The suspect, in his 40s, was arrested at noon Monday when he appeared at the Sabah MACC Office here to give a statement. According to a source, the suspect is believed to have offered to help the complainant obtain the title of Datuk from Pahang in 2023, even though he did not have the authority to do so. 'The suspect is believed to have dishonestly induced the complainant to transfer RM6,000 purportedly for the purchase of ceremonial clothing accessories needed to obtain the award,' he said. Sabah MACC Director Datuk S Karunanithy confirmed the arrest and said the suspect was released on bail. He said the suspect is scheduled to be charged at the Kota Kinabalu Sessions Court this Thursday (July 24) under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Mule account offences rise in Malaysia - Bukit Aman warns public
KUALA LUMPUR: Mule account offences are increasingly worrying authorities, with thousands of Malaysians, including students, falling victim to financial crime syndicates luring them with promises of easy money. Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa revealed that as of Monday (July 21), a total of 39,006 mule account cases had been detected, with 10,635 cases charged in court. Rusdi stated, 'This is not merely a financial issue; it has become a form of organised crime used by syndicates to carry out various illegal activities, including online fraud, fake investments and e-commerce fraud.' He warned that those involved could face charges under sections 424A, 424B, and 424C of the Penal Code, carrying a prison sentence of up to 10 years and fines of up to RM150,000. Common forms of involvement include handing over bank account details to third parties without reason, opening accounts for others, and using personal accounts for suspicious transactions. To combat this, Rusdi introduced the T.A.K.E.F.I.V.E formula as a preventive measure. The first step, Think, urges individuals to critically assess investment opportunities before acting. The second, Ask, advises verifying information with authorities before sharing banking details. Knowledge is the third step, encouraging the public to stay updated on cybercrime tactics and use verification tools like Semak Mule PDRM and Bank Negara Malaysia's Financial Consumer Alert List. Rusdi added, 'The fifth step is Fight - avoid being susceptible and don't be deceived by promises of huge or quick returns.' The final steps, Ignore and Vigilant, stress ignoring dubious offers and cutting ties with suspicious individuals. – Bernama

Woman jailed for concealing birth of baby boy at homestay
The Kota Kinabalu Court Complex. KOTA KINABALU (July 23): A 22-year-old woman was sentenced to six months in jail and fined RM2,000, in default two months' imprisonment, by a Magistrate's Court here for deliberately concealing the birth of a baby boy two years ago. Armaya Matjani pleaded guilty before magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus to a charge under Section 318 of the Penal Code. The section provides that anyone who secretly buries or otherwise disposes of the dead body of a child in order to conceal its birth may be punished with up to two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, Armaya had wrapped the newborn in a blue plastic bag shortly after giving birth and hid the body behind a toilet tank at a homestay between November 1 and 2, 2023. On November 6, 2023, a complainant reported a foul smell emanating from behind the toilet tank, where blood stains, a blue plastic bag and an umbilical cord were discovered. Investigations revealed that Armaya had checked into the homestay using someone else's name via an online booking platform. She was seen to be pregnant at the time of check-in but appeared no longer pregnant upon checkout. She had checked in alone. A police report was subsequently lodged, and a forensic team found the body of a baby boy wrapped in the blue plastic bag. The infant was confirmed dead. Armaya, who was unrepresented in court, stated she was unmarried and did not know the whereabouts of the baby's father.
