Shop supervisor fined for selling items with incorrect Qur'anic texts
Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin imposed the sentence on Saadiah Jaidin, 43, after the latter pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 14 (1) of the Printing of Qur'anic Texts Act 1986 (Amendment 2023), punishable under Section 14 (2) of the same Act.
The indictment provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 or a jail term of up to five years, or both, upon conviction.
Saadiah admitted to offer for sale 22 frames, including frame watches and wordings of Muhammad and Allah, at a souvenir shop at a hypermall at Jalan Sulaman here on March 25.
The court heard that the complainant checked the shop and found those items displayed on the shelves.
All the items were seized and investigation revealed that the texts were incorrect and did not follow the correct writings set under the law.

Elderly man with two wives charged with raping sister-in-law
KOTA BARU: A 64-year-old man with two wives was charged in the Sessions Court here today with raping his sister-in-law at a village in Kubang Golok, Bachok, in January this year. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him before Judge Zulkifli Abdullah. According to the charge sheet, the accused is alleged to have raped his 18-year-old sister-in-law in a room at a house at 3pm on Jan 18. He was charged under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 30 years and whipping upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Siti Hajar Mazlan prosecuted while the accused was represented by lawyer Ahmad Nurie Ab Rahman. Earlier, Siti Hajar did not offer bail, stating that the victim is the accused's sister-in-law and that both the accused's and the victim's families live together. Ahmad Nurie, however, requested bail on the grounds that his client, who works as a coconut milk trader, has to support his family and has two wives. The court later granted bail of RM12,000 with one surety and set Aug 25 for mention.

Home Ministry awaits report on officers in flying passport bribery case
KULIM: The Home Ministry is still awaiting a complete report on the investigation into enforcement officers suspected of aiding a 'flying passport' syndicate at Malaysia's border checkpoints. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stated that the ministry will receive the report from Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain. Yesterday, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested four enforcement officers suspected of receiving bribes of about RM3,000 for facilitating the 'flying passport' activity at the motorcycle entry zone checkpoint at the Johor-Singapore border. Two of them were detained by AKPS' Compliance Unit during an inspection at the counter yesterday, while two other officers were arrested for allegedly colluding in the operation. Meanwhile, Saifuddin Nasution said RELA members must equip themselves with new skills and enhance training to expand the scope of their functions. He stressed the need for a shift in RELA's core duties from the usual roles of traffic control, disaster response and managing public events. 'This shift aims to elevate RELA's role to include responsibilities in sensitive areas such as border control. 'Of course, RELA will not act alone. Its purpose is to complement and support existing enforcement agencies. The ministry sees potential for RELA to contribute further,' he said.
