A clever glass trick fixes the decade-old photonic crystal laser problem

Photonic-crystal surface-emitting laser (PCSEL) is a promising technology that can completely revolutionize what lasers can achieve. Such a system can produce highly directional, bright beams with pinpoint precision, making it ideal for applications like LiDAR, optical communication, and sensing systems used in autonomous vehicles and defense gadgets.
However, despite their potential, PCSELs have been notoriously difficult to develop. The problem lies in their core design, which relies on special air holes that disappear soon after they are formed.
Now, engineers at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) have overcome this long-standing hurdle. Instead of air holes, they have proposed embedding silicon dioxide into the photonic crystal layer. According to the scientists, this change allowed them to successfully demonstrate the first room-temperature, eye-safe, photopumped PCSEL using buried dielectric features.
Traditionally, PCSELs are built with air holes in their photonic crystal layer, which helps control how light moves inside the device. However, when scientists try to grow semiconductor material around those holes, which is a necessary step to complete the laser, the atoms shift and fill in the holes. This reshaping ruins the photonic crystal's structure, preventing the laser from working correctly.
To resolve this issue, the study authors filled the photonic crystal layer with silicon dioxide, a solid and stable dielectric material. This change gave the structure strength and prevented it from collapsing during regrowth.
However, the solution introduced a new problem. Silicon dioxide is amorphous, meaning it doesn't have a crystal structure, and growing semiconductors on top of such materials is usually extremely difficult.

"The first time we tried to regrow the dielectric, we didn't know if it was even possible. Ideally, for semiconductor growth, you want to maintain that very pure crystal structure all the way up from the base layer, which is difficult to achieve with an amorphous material like silicon dioxide," said Erin Raftery, lead researcher and an engineering student at UIUC.
For a laser to function, the semiconductor layers above need to maintain a smooth, continuous crystal structure. The team didn't know if it would be possible, but by carefully controlling the conditions, the engineers managed to grow the semiconductor laterally around the dielectric and then merge the material over the top, in a process known as coalescence.
The result was a buried dielectric PCSEL that could emit a laser beam when excited by light, even at room temperature, and at a wavelength safe for the human eye, something no one had achieved before.
This proof-of-concept lays the foundation for a new generation of surface-emitting lasers that are more precise, stable, and scalable than current technologies. PCSELs will produce high-brightness, narrow, circular beams, making them ideal for everything ranging from communication applications to high-tech weaponry.
The use of solid dielectric material also simplifies the fabrication process and improves device durability. However, this first version still requires external light (photopumping) to power the laser, which limits its practicality in real-world applications.
To make it truly usable, the team plans to design an electrically injected version by adding electrical contacts, allowing the laser to run on standard power sources.
The study is published in the journal IEEE Photonics Journal.

Wi-Fi routers aren't the most attractive devices. You might be tempted to stash yours behind the couch, under a bookshelf, or (gasp) inside a cabinet. Hiding your router will keep a clunky-looking gadget out of sight, but it'll also make it much harder for your Wi-Fi router to do its job. Obstructing the signal with furniture, walls or enclosed spaces weakens your connection and slows down your internet -- especially in rooms farther away from the router. If you want fast, reliable Wi-Fi throughout your home, placement matters more than you think. "The main factor you have to consider is that Wi-Fi travels very well over open air, and it travels very poorly through hard material," said Julian, a technician with ThoseTechGuys in Renton, Washington. "The best place to put a router is centrally located out in the open away from any cabinets, kitchen, plumbing, walls, things like that." Placing your router in a central location gives it the best chance at broadcasting a strong Wi-Fi signal evenly throughout your home. Here's What I Learned $873 Later Locating local internet providers First mistake: Put your router on the floor Putting your router on the floor won't completely kill your signal, but you won't be maximizing it, either. Think of your router like a light bulb. You want it to light up as large an area as possible. Putting a lamp on the ground will still provide some lighting, but not as much as putting it on a table. Radio waves typically send their strongest signals downward, so placing your router in an elevated position will maximize your coverage. You can find wall mounts on Amazon, but I wouldn't recommend them -- attaching your router to a wall will block a good chunk of its signal. Instead, try placing it on a table or shelf, ideally with a foot or so of space from the wall. Now Playing: Should you replace your router? Maybe! 05:55 Second mistake: Place your router behind the couch If you look around the living room for the best place to put your router, the couch might jump out as a convenient hiding place. But this is a bad idea for the same reason you don't want to put it right against a wall or floor. "You want to avoid as many hard materials that the Wi-Fi signal has to travel through as possible," Julian said. A couch or armchair might not be as oversized of an impediment as a wall, but it will still weaken your Wi-Fi signal. Third mistake: Stash your router in the basement Some people dislike the look of their router so much that they stash it in the basement. But that violates one of the fundamental rules of home networking: Put your router where you use it the most -- and that's probably not in the basement. Basements also tend to have a lot of things that can interfere with a Wi-Fi signal. "There's also a lot more noise in the basement," said David Maxey, a senior technician at IT support company NerdsToGo in Bellevue, Washington. "If you have fluorescent lighting, wiring or copper piping in the ground floor, that's definitely going to have some effect." Fourth mistake: Hide your router away inside cabinets A cabinet might seem like a clever solution to an unsightly router, but it's one of the few mistakes you can make that could actually damage your router. In addition to blocking the signal, keeping a router in an enclosed space could cause it to overheat. In late 2024, one woman in Florida lost her home in a fire that she says was started by her Wi-Fi router. That's an extreme, worst-case scenario. What's more likely is that your router would degrade over time with inadequate airflow, with occasional periods of complete shutdown. Fifth mistake: Set your router up near another Wi-Fi router "Wi-Fi operates on its own spectrum of basically radio waves, so any device that broadcasts on the same spectrum is going to interfere with it. That includes other Wi-Fi devices," Julian told me. Receiving devices like your TV or smart speaker will not mess with your Wi-Fi, but it will be a problem if you have other equipment like routers or gateways. That doesn't include mesh systems, which use multiple routers in tandem to spread a Wi-Fi signal throughout the home. Why would someone have multiple routers if they're not part of a mesh system? It's more common than you might think, says Julian. "People just don't know. You start with one device, like a router, and then your internet's not working as well as you want. So then you go buy another device," Julian says. "It's just a lack of knowledge that the devices should be in the same family, in the same system." So, where should you put your router? The best place to put your router is somewhere you can see it, such as a centrally located room. Ideally, it should be raised at least a few feet off the ground, with some open space between it and any walls or thick pieces of furniture. That might be unwelcome news for those of us with eyesores for routers, but you can always hide your router inside a wicker basket or plastic crate. Just make sure the container isn't metal, which can interfere with a Wi-Fi signal.

Computer accessory brand Plugable has announced the launch of the Plugable USB-C 6-Port Priority Charger. The company claims it's the world's first USB-C-only six-port charger designed to work with the USB-C power supply that you already own. In essence, it's a series of intelligent charging ports that you use with your own power supply. Following on from the success of Plugable's PS-10CC 10-port USB-C charger, the company decided to make something a little smaller for those of us who don't need quite so many ports but who would still like the intelligence and sustainability that made the original device a CES favorite. At the heart of the PS-6CC is something called PriorityShare, a patented smart-charging system that senses real-time current needs and then prioritizes power distribution across the ports, from left to right.
