State Congress president Bhakta Charan Das accused the BJP of having orchestrated this poster campaign to defame the party. "We are certain about BJP's involvement in this negative poster campaign against the Congress. This indicates BJP's apprehension towards Congress, which has strengthened its protests regarding the reported rise in crimes against women," Das said.
"BJP cannot stifle our voice. Women safety is our biggest focus.
Our protest will be intensified in the coming days," he added even as another Congress member criticised the BMC for not pulling down such unauthorised posters.
The Congress formed a six-member committee on Monday to investigate the allegations against Pradhan. The party indicated it would support strict action if the charges were proven true.
Responding strongly to the allegations, BJP MLA Babu Singh said, "Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones at others.

Congress MLA Pargat Singh Tuesday raised serious concerns over the Punjab government's intent and the prolonged delay in delivering justice in the 2015 sacrilege cases. Addressing a press conference here Tuesday, he said that after the AAP came to power, case files pertaining to Dera Sacha Sauda chief were suppressed. 'For over two and a half years, prosecution sanction was not granted against Dera chief Ram Rahim. Repeated questions were raised in the Vidhan Sabha, but the government remained silent,' he said. Pargat said not a single AAP MLA of 95 ever raised their voice on the matter. He added that cases against Dera followers were transferred outside Punjab under a conspiracy involving AAP, and even senior advocate HS Phoolka publicly exposed this plot. He said that after the AAP government assumed office in May 2022, the file seeking prosecution sanction against Ram Rahim was submitted to CM Bhagwant Mann, who also holds the Home portfolio. 'I met him in December 2022 regarding the matter. I also raised the issue thrice in the Assembly, yet nothing was done,' he said. Pargat Singh also clarified Congress' position and asserted that the party took serious action when in power. 'The Congress government had constituted the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission and launched an investigation. Rahul Gandhi visited Punjab and assured the people that justice would be served. When there was a slowdown in action, the Congress replaced its Chief Minister and accelerated the SIT probe,' he said. He added that when former CM Captain Amarinder Singh compromised with the Badal family and allowed the investigation to be derailed, a group of justice-seeking Congress MLAs approached the party high command and ensured the leadership was changed. He also criticised the SAD, stating, 'Sukhbir Badal has not named the Dera chief even once because his only concern is saving his Bathinda seat—not securing justice for the sacrilege of Guru Sahib.' He added that in the 2015 sacrilege cases, there was an attempt to falsely implicate Sikh youth. Holding the BJP directly responsible, Pargat added, 'The BJP must clarify its stand. It has always worked against Punjab's interests. Sukhbir avoided calling the Dera chief guilty because of BJP's influence.' He asked why AAP leaders Aman Arora, Harpal Cheema, and Kultar Singh Sandhwan are silent today. 'These are the same people who once demanded justice within three months,' he said.

He also claimed that the conflict between India and Pakistan "was probably going to end up in a nuclear war". "We stopped wars between India and Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda," he said at a reception in the White House with the Congress members. "They shot down five planes and it was back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. I called them and said, 'Listen, no more trade. Harish emphasised that India's response was focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature. On achieving its primary objectives, a cessation of military activities was directly concluded at the request of Pakistan, he said. Since May 10, when Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire after a long night of talks mediated by Washington, he has repeated his claim several times on various occasions that he helped settle the tensions and that he told the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours that America will do a lot of trade with them if they stopped the conflict. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump were scheduled to meet on the sidelines of the G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, in June, but the US president returned to Washington early. Before departing Kananaskis and wrapping up his first visit to Canada in a decade, Modi had a 35-minute telephonic conversation with Trump in Washington. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had said in a video message from Kananaskis that Modi clearly conveyed to Trump that at no point during the days following Operation Sindoor was there any discussion, at any level, on an India-US trade deal or any proposal for mediation by the US between India and Pakistan. Asserting Prime Minister Modi firmly stated that India does not and will never accept mediation, Misri had said the discussion to cease military action took place directly between India and Pakistan through the existing channels of communication between the two armed forces and it was initiated at Pakistan's request. The US has designated The Resistance Front as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). The State Department said these actions taken by it against The Resistance Front demonstrates the Trump administration's commitment to protecting our national security interests, countering terrorism, and enforcing President Trump's call for justice for the Pahalgam attack.

But political observers note that there's more to it — his decision to accept the opposition's notice on Justice Varma could have factored into his exit. However, 74-year-old Jagdeep Dhankhar surprised one and all when the vice president of India announced his resignation at 9.25 pm on Monday, July 21 — two years before his term ended. The now former vice president cited his health and medical advice as the reasons for his departure. However, not everyone, especially the opposition, is buying it. The Congress has said that there's more than meets the eye. In fact, Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi told the Indian Express, 'The sudden resignation, and the cryptic tweets of PM Narendra Modi. It shows the unease in the relationship between the government and the Constitutional post of V-P. It seems like a game of one-upmanship.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Others in the opposition have also raised questions as to whether health was truly the reason for Dhankhar's exit. So, what went wrong? Was politics behind the cause of Dhankhar's resignation? Did he fall out with the government — which he had been often accused of being biased to? What did Dhankhar say about his resignation? After presiding over the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha on the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Dhankhar made an unscheduled visit to Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, throwing the house staff into a tizzy. According to a Times of India report, Dhankhar arrived at 9 pm at the presidential residence and held a hastily-arranged meeting with President Droupadi Murmu. As required by law, he then tendered his resignation to her. At 9.25 pm, he then broke the news to all, releasing his resignation letter to the public, which read: 'To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.' He also wrote, 'As I leave this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat's global rise and phenomenal achievements and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future.' The move came as a surprise to many within political circles. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh even wrote on X, 'The sudden resignation of the vice president and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is as shocking as it is inexplicable. 'No doubt Mr Dhankar has to give topmost priority to his health. But clearly there is far more to his totally unexpected resignation than meets the eye. This is not the time for speculation though.' However, those who observe Indian politics very closely suggest that there were signs of a chasm between Dhankhar and the ruling government. The biggest proof of a rupture between the two was Dhankhar's decision on Monday in the Rajya Sabha. On Monday, the first day of the Monsoon session, Dhankhar accepted a notice by the opposition to remove High Court Justice Yashwant Varma at whose house bundles of cash were allegedly found. When told by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal that a similar motion was in the Lok Sabha, he directed the Secretary General to verify if a similar motion was moved in the Lower House. On Meghwal's confirmation that a notice had also been submitted in the Lok Sabha, Dhankhar asked the Secretary General to 'take necessary steps in this direction'. Dhankhar, then said that according to the Judges (Inquiry) Act, when notices of a motion are submitted on the same day in both the Houses of Parliament, a committee to examine the charges levelled against the judge would be constituted jointly by the Lok Sabha Speaker and the Rajya Sabha Chairman. As one source told NDTV that the move went against the government's plan to introduce the motion in the Lok Sabha. Moreover, the government was upset because they believed that Dhankhar's stand diluted the government's leadership on the matter. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Political observers also note that there were other signs that all wasn't well between Dhankhar and the government. For instance, BJP's leader in the Rajya Sabha JP Nadda strong intervention during the debate on Operation Sindoor. 'Nothing will go on record, only what I say will go on record,' Nadda was heard saying while pointing towards Dhankhar. The Congress states that this was an 'insult' of the Chairman, a claim dismissed by Nadda, who stated that his comments were directed at the opposition. There's also the fact that JP Nadda and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju skipped Dhankhar's 4.30 pm meeting of the business advisory committee, upsetting the vice president. However, Nadda has clarified, 'The Vice President's office was intimated about our inability to attend the meeting.' Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement on Dhankhar's exit seemed to be a give away. The PM wished the latter good health and thanked him for serving the country in various capacities. 'Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health.' But beyond these reasons, there are some speculating that Dhankhar's meeting with Congress and AAP leaders could have also played a factor in his resignation. On July 15, the Vice President's Office posted a 44-second video of Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, paying Dhankhar a visit at the V-P Enclave. Moreover, a day before the start of the Monsoon Session, Dhankhar met Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal at his residence. It's important to note that Kejriwal is not an MP. This has raised many questions as until recently Dhankhar was often criticised by the opposition for being a government stooge and even faced an impeachment notice, threatening to remove him as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for allegedly being partisan to them. What awaits Dhankhar? Now, that the President has accepted his resignation and it has been notified, Dhankhar will leave the VP Enclave and move into a government bungalow sanctioned to him. 'He (Dhankhar) will be offered a Type VIII bungalow in Lutyens' Delhi or another area,' an official said.
