Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand, along with his wife Lalitha Anand, visited the temple and launched the procession. He thanked the temple management and organisers and extended his best wishes for the smooth conduct of the festival.
Tracing the rich legacy of the temple, Mr.Anand said the Sri Akkana Madanna Temple dated back 350 years. 'Pujas were performed here during the Qutb Shahi rule in 1675 for nearly a decade. After the death of Akkanna and Madanna, the rituals came to a halt. It was only after Independence that the temple was rebuilt and festivals revived,' he said.
He added that the Bonalu celebrations had been held on a grand scale over the past month, with active support from Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Konda Surekha. 'This year's Bonalu festivities were unprecedented in scale and participation, thanks to their involvement,' Mr.Anand said.
On security, the top cop said preventive measures had been taken to avoid stampedes and other untoward incidents. 'We ensured seamless coordination between departments so that devotees are not put to any inconvenience. SHE Teams and crime units were on the ground to curb eve-teasing, pickpocketing and chain-snatching,' he explained.
The Ghattam procession passed through Gowliguda, Lal Darwaza and Shah Ali Banda before culminating at Nayapul.
Senior officials including Additional CP Vikram Singh Mann, Joint CP Traffic Joel Davis, and DCPs Apoorva Rao, Sneha Mehra, Rakshitha Krishna Murthy and Venkateswarlu were present at the event.

BHUBANESWAR: At the launch of a women-safety initiative recently, CM Mohan Charan Majhi vowed a 'non-negotiable policy for women's protection and dignity.' It was no routine political statement. His words came at a time when reports of violent crimes against women have surfaced across the state. Faced with this situation, the state govt has rolled out several measures to confront rising fear, even as official crime data suggests a marginal decline. Odisha police records show 28,800 cases of crimes against women between June 2024 and April 2025, compared to 29,539 cases in the same period a year earlier — a drop of 2.5%. But the brutality of recent incidents has eclipsed the statistics, sparking a deeper conversation about safety, accountability and institutional failure. The gang-rape of a 20-year-old student by 10 men at Gopalpur beach in June shocked the entire state. Barely a month later, a college student in Balasore set herself ablaze after repeated complaints of sexual harassment against her department head went unanswered. The tragedy ignited student protests across Odisha and pushed the state to announce Shaktishree on July 19, a programme aimed at ensuring the safety of girl students in higher educational institutions. 'Women's safety should top the agenda of every govt,' the father of the Balasore college student told TOI. 'However, we need strict implementation of the project at ground zero to prevent Gopalpur and Balasore-like tragedies,' he added. A ctivists believe the outrage is a moment of reckoning. 'These incidents have left a deep scar on our collective conscience,' women's safety campaigner Maheswata Nanda said. 'While official statistics might show a marginal decrease in crime rates, the nature of recent crimes indicates a troubling pattern of institutional failure and social degradation,' she added. Police said they have pulled up their socks. 'Women's safety has been our focus area. SPs and DCPs have been instructed to show zero tolerance,' DGP Y B Khurania said. Another senior officer noted, 'Numbers cannot capture the impact of such horrific crimes. We have directed all police stations to treat every complaint with utmost seriousness. Any lapse will not be tolerated.' Experts caution, however, that policing alone cannot solve the crisis. 'We need to address the root causes — the way we raise our children, the messages we send through our actions and the values we instil,' Madhusmita Mohanty, a retired DSP, said. The govt has since announced more measures: increased police presence in vulnerable areas, tighter inter-department coordination during emergencies, and directives to district administrations and urban local bodies to display prominent boards. The women and child development department ordered all internal committees to be onboarded onto the She-Box portal ( ), a single-window platform for sexual harassment complaints at workplaces. 'Unlike previous govts, we are fully committed and focused on women's safety,' deputy CM Pravati Parida said. Opposition parties remain unconvinced, demanding the CM's resignation. But they too faced embarrassment after Congress student wing leader Udit Pradhan and BJD corporator Amaresh Jena were booked in separate rape cases. Odisha government to withhold staff salaries of HEIs without ICCs
BHUBANESWAR: Salaries of employees of colleges that fail to set up internal complaints committees (ICCs) under Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013 or the POSH Act, will be withheld. Deputy chief minister Pravati Parida told mediapersons on Thursday, 'The institutions have been provided a month's time to establish ICCs. Those who file false cases of sexual harassment will also face disciplinary action following inquiry.' 'Our campaign on prevention of sexual harassment had started from the Lok Seva Bhawan and will now to rolled out in every institution at the block level,' Parida added. Last week, the Cuttack administration had threatened to withhold salaries of employees of close to 100 higher educational institutions (HEIs) in the district after they failed to submit compliance on POSH Act as directed by the Higher Education department, following the FM College incident on July 12. The department has now asked all colleges and teacher education institutions to upload details of their ICCs on 'Sexual Harassment Electronic Box' or the SHe-Box portal of the Women and Child Development Ministry, by August 1. For this purpose, regional directors of education (RDEs) have been appointed as nodal officers in five RDE zones. Every higher educational institution is required to form an ICC in compliance with the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013. The directive issued by the department on Wednesday requires institutions to provide comprehensive data on complaints received, their resolutions, and the composition of ICCs at both departmental and institutional levels. Meanwhile, department officials informed that almost 80 per cent of the higher educational institutions have formed ICCs following its directive of July 13. The FM College at Balasore, where a student had set herself afire after allegedly being sexually harassed by her HoD, had no ICC in place when the girl first registered her complaint against the professor on June 30.

Founded by Savarkar, revived by Godse's niece: Abhinav Bharat ‘vindicated', hails Malegaon acquittals
Originally floated by freedom fighter V D Savarkar in 1904 to carry out an armed struggle against the British and revived in post-Independence India, the Abhinav Bharat hit the headlines almost two decades ago after some of its members, including Lt Col Prasad Purohit, were accused of masterminding the 2008 Malegaon blasts. On Thursday, as a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court acquitted all the accused in the case, Milind Joshirao, a Pune resident who claims to be the organisation's head, said false allegations had been levelled against the outfit and the term 'saffron terror' was coined. 'The judgment shows that all allegations against Abhinav Bharat and Hindus arrested in the bomb blast case were false,' he said, hailing the verdict. Savarkar, also a Hindutva ideologue, had dissolved Abhinav Bharat in 1952, saying there was no need for an armed struggle in independent India and urged the youth to join the defence forces to serve the country. It was revived only in 2006 in Raigad by his brother Narayan's daughter-in-law Himani Savarkar, along with a group of historians, intellectuals, and activists. Himani, who later became the President of the revived organisation, is the daughter of Gopal Godse, the elder brother of Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse. According to Himani, Abhinav Bharat, which was registered as a Trust on February 9, 2007, was revived to 'generate a sense of patriotism among youth,' create awareness on social issues and apprise them about 'injustice being meted out against Hindus'. The organisation aimed to fulfil its aims through lectures, discussions and seminars in colleges and public platforms within and outside Maharashtra. According to investigators who probed the Malegaon blasts, the Abhinav Bharat was an 'organised crime syndicate' whose members had been active since 2003. It was alleged that Lt Col Purohit, who was accused of procuring explosives from Kashmir for the attack, played a key part in the organisation's revival. Investigators also claimed that the Abhinav Bharat wanted to 'turn India into a Hindu Rashtra called Aryavart and place a government-in-exile' as its members were 'dissatisfied with the Constitution'. Its members were also accused of planning to train people in guerrilla warfare to eliminate people who opposed a Hindu Rashtra. 'It is unfortunate that an organisation undertaking constructive activities for society was harassed,' Purohit said after the verdict. Maharashtra ATS chargesheet claimed that Himani, in her statement, mentioned that Purohit discussed the Malegaon location during a meeting in Bhopal for taking revenge against Muslims. However, in a January 2009 interaction with The Indian Express she denied making any such mention in her statement during the probe. She passed away in 2015. Her son Satyaki Savarkar said his mother 'suffered a lot due to this case as false narratives of saffron terrorism were propagated'. Another acquitted member of the Abhinav Bharat, Ajay Rahirkar, was the treasurer of the organisation at the time of his arrest in 2008. Investigators alleged that Rahikar's house in Erandwane of Pune served as the 'head office' of Abhinav Bharat. However, Rahikar's advocate Nitin Apte said the body is a registered Trust and was not banned by the government. Joshirao, whom the NIA declared hostile, said though Abhinav Bharat was branded as an extremist outfit and its documents were seized, it continued to work in the 'national interest'. 'I had told the court on record how I was threatened by ATS officers to implicate RSS leaders and (Uttar Pradesh CM) Yogi Adityanath,' he said.
