SHE Teams nabs 644 offenders red-handed during Bonalu festivities

Hyderabad: Hyderabad SHE Teams nabbed 644 offenders during the Bonalu Festival. As many as five individuals were imprisoned for 7 days. They were caught red-handed indulging in various forms of harassment, including eve-teasing, inappropriate behavior, filming women without consent, and other acts violating public decency and women's safety. According to the SHE teams, as part of the intensive safety and surveillance measures undertaken during the Bonalu festival celebrations across Hyderabad, SHE Teams Hyderabad actively monitored public gatherings and festive processions to ensure the safety and dignity of women and girls. Strategic deployment of teams was carried out at major Bonalu venues including Golconda Bonalu, Balkampet Yellamma Bonalu, Ujjaini Mahankali Bonalu (Secunderabad), and Lal Darwaza Mahankali Bonalu. 'With the vigilant presence and swift intervention of SHE Teams, a total of 644 individuals were caught red-handed indulging in various forms of harassment. Among them, 552 were majors and 92 were minors,' said Dr Lavanya NJP, DCP Women Safety Wing. As an of zero tolerance against harassment, five individuals - Ram Anand (51), Nilakanth (48), Balraju (36), Lakshman (42), and Dinesh (34) who were caught red-handed misbehaving with women devotees, were produced before the court. Based on the evidence presented and the severity of the offence, Sri Manda Murali, IXth Special Judicial Magistrate, Nampally, awarded 7 days of imprisonment to the offenders under Section 70(c) of the Hyderabad City Police Act. SHE teams alerts the women to be aware in public places and women and children are requested to stay alert in public places. In case of any misbehavior or molestation, they are advised to raise a complaint with SHE Teams or dial 100/112 for immediate action. SHE Teams Hyderabad caught 644 individuals for sexual harassment-related offences during the month-long Bonalu festival celebrations across the city. They logged these reports while being deployed at various celebration sites including Golconda Bonalu, Balkampet Yellamma Bonalu, Ujjaini Mahakali Bonalu in Secunderabad, and Lal Darwaza Mahankali Bonalu. The offenders caught were involved in offences such as eve-teasing, misbehaviour, filming women without consent, and other acts violating women's safety. Of the 644, 552 were adults and 92 were minors, according to a media release. Five individuals, Ram Anand, 51, Nilakanth, 48, Balraju, 36, Lakshman, 42, and Dinesh, 34, were sentenced to seven days' imprisonment under Section 70(c) of the Hyderabad City Police Act by the Magistrate Manda Murali of the IXth Special Judicial Magistrate, Nampally. SHE Teams advised women and children to stay alert in public spaces and to report any misbehaviour by dialling 100 or 112. They also issued digital safety warnings: beware of fake online profiles, avoid sharing personal details on social media, and use strong passwords with two-factor authentication. With robust security arrangements, deployment of SHE Teams and crime units, and coordination across departments, the historic Ghattam procession of Bonalu festival which began at Akkana Madanna Temple in Haribowli on Monday morning, concluded late on Monday night. Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand, along with his wife Lalitha Anand, visited the temple and launched the procession. He thanked the temple management and organisers and extended his best wishes for the smooth conduct of the festival. Tracing the rich legacy of the temple, said the Sri Akkana Madanna Temple dated back 350 years. 'Pujas were performed here during the Qutb Shahi rule in 1675 for nearly a decade. After the death of Akkanna and Madanna, the rituals came to a halt. It was only after Independence that the temple was rebuilt and festivals revived,' he said. He added that the Bonalu celebrations had been held on a grand scale over the past month, with active support from Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Konda Surekha. 'This year's Bonalu festivities were unprecedented in scale and participation, thanks to their involvement,' said. On security, the top cop said preventive measures had been taken to avoid stampedes and other untoward incidents. 'We ensured seamless coordination between departments so that devotees are not put to any inconvenience. SHE Teams and crime units were on the ground to curb eve-teasing, pickpocketing and chain-snatching,' he explained. The Ghattam procession passed through Gowliguda, Lal Darwaza and Shah Ali Banda before culminating at Nayapul. Senior officials including Additional CP Vikram Singh Mann, Joint CP Traffic Joel Davis, and DCPs Apoorva Rao, Sneha Mehra, Rakshitha Krishna Murthy and Venkateswarlu were present at the event.

Renowned agronomist and plant breeder M.S. Swaminathan's centenary celebrations will be held in a grand manner in Tirupati on August 7. Velamoor Rajagopal, a disciple of Dr. Swaminathan and an avid follower of his 'Zero Hunger India' concept, has themed the event to promote the concept of 'Hunger-free Tirupati'. A native of Tirupati, Dr. Rajagopal, now aged 82 years, launched Society for Hunger Elimination (SHE) after retiring as Director of Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) at Kasaragod, Kerala.
