Mark Newnham confident of ending Happy Valley card in style with in-form gallopers
The 57-year-old handler has a pair of horses backing up off last-start victories at the city circuit on Wednesday night
Mark Newnham is hoping to keep the good times rolling with last-start winners Fatal Blow and Casa Rochester at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.
Casa Rochester runs in the Class Three Deauville Handicap (1,650m) off the back of shedding his maiden in very comfortable fashion over course and distance one month ago.
Settled out the back, his rider Hugh Bowman made stealthy progress through the middle of the pack on the final bend and once in the clear, he charged home to get up by a nose.
The winning margin didn't do the victory justice, however, and Newnham is confident his improving galloper can get the job done again with Lyle Hewitson back in the saddle.

'It was a cosy win last time in a lower grade but his previous run in Class Three he was competitive,' said Newnham. 'With that in mind, I'm not worried about the rise in class for him.
'He's got a good draw, which is always a big positive at Happy Valley, and he's going to run a big race.'
Newnham's evening could get even better just 35 minutes later when Fatal Blow also bids to back up a course-and-distance win in the card-closing Class Three Parislongchamp Handicap (1,200m).
Fatal Blow has thrived over the Valley 1,200m for Newnham this season, winning on his second start by a short head after showing a really game attitude.

He disappointed in two subsequent outings, but he was back on track after a three-month break when flashing home to salute in Class Four company and he will be having just his sixth Hong Kong start on Wednesday.
Newnham has paired him with in-form jockey Andrea Atzeni and is hopeful of another big run from his unexposed four-year-old.
'He's a lightly raced and improving horse,' said Newnham. 'He's been pretty solid since he arrived and he was impressive at the Valley last time.
'I think this is a nice race to introduce him to Class Three racing. Whether he takes a race or two to get there in this company, we'll find out, but he's going well.
'He's definitely got more to come after only five starts and he's finished in the money in three of those already.'
Those are not the only big chances on the card for Newnham, with the 57-year-old hoping Setanta can build on a fast-finishing third at the Valley seven days ago in the Class Four Saint-Cloud Handicap (1,650m).
Setanta has been plying his trade in Class Three company this season and left behind a trio of disappointing runs when lashing home off this rating last time.
The drop in grade is an obvious positive to his chances and he could be sneaking in under the radar.
'That was more like it at the Valley last week,' said Newnham. 'The drop to Class Four company will be a big help to him and he has run well when backing up quickly in the past, too.'
Newnham kicked off his tenure in Hong Kong with a 31-winner campaign last season and he has already smashed through that tally this term, heading into the meeting with 37 winners.
His season has been headlined by My Wish, who won the Hong Kong Classic Mile before two agonising defeats in the subsequent legs of the Classic Series.

Talented sprinter Beauty Waves made the perfect start to life with new trainer Tony Cruz, banking a tough win in Saturday's Class One Pearce Memorial Challenge Cup (1,000m) at Sha Tin. Recently transferred to Cruz after four wins for Pierre Ng Pang-chi, the Irish import enhanced his reputation as a straight-track specialist when he proved too slick for strong opposition in Saturday's feature. Backed from $6.9 to $3.7 late, Beauty Waves was sent forward by Alexis Badel to race on the speed and fought on gamely to beat $3.5 favourite Wunderbar by half a length. 'I was expecting him to run a big race,' Cruz said of the five-year-old, who won the Group Three National Day Sprint (1,000m) for Ng and Badel in October. Beauty Waves is a winner again! I believe he can win more races. 'I'm so happy this horse came over [to my stable]. I liked this horse from the very beginning - I've been watching him in the past. He's always a real speedy horse, like he showed today, and he won in good time. I believe he's a 1,000m horse.' Wunderbar launched a late challenge in the centre of the track but ultimately came up short, while Magic Control was beaten a length and a quarter in third. Cruz said Beauty Waves would be aimed at 1,000m features next season, while Badel was over the moon to hop back aboard the son of Starspangledbanner. Frankie Lor fancies Horsepower down in trip and weight in Class One sprint
Horsepower steams home under Zac Purton to score at the Valley in April. Photos: Kenneth Chan Frankie Lor Fu-chuen is confident Horsepower will relish a return to 1,000m and a light weight when the talented sprinter tackles Saturday's Class One Pearce Memorial Challenge Cup at Sha Tin. A three-time winner from five starts in his first Hong Kong season, the former Australian galloper drops back to the minimum trip after failing on his first attempt at 1,200m last start. Champion jockey Zac Purton told stewards that Horsepower raced too keenly in the early and middle stages and refused to settle when ninth to Kaholo Angel at Happy Valley. While Lor hasn't given up on the Harry Angel gelding running a strong six furlongs in the future, he has high hopes that the return to the course and distance of his victory in February will work the oracle. 'I asked Zac to just jump and relax. They were going quick early and he asked the horse to go with them and then he pulled,' Lor said of Horsepower's recent defeat. This time, he goes back to 1,000m at Sha Tin and Zac can ride him 2lb over [his allotted weight of 118lb]. 'I think he'll be OK and his form's OK. Hopefully we can have a good result for his last run of the season.' A winner at his final two Australian starts when known as Fire Follower, Horsepower made a spectacular start to his Hong Kong career when he stormed home to win first up at the Valley in October. The four-year-old was then scratched at the barriers for another Valley race when he was found to be lame. Lor gave him a short break and he returned to triumph down the Sha Tin straight in February. He has drawn barrier three in Saturday's eight-runner contest, which is headlined by Cody Mo Wai-kit's straight-track specialist Magic Control and John Size's quality sprinter Wunderbar, who is fresh from bouncing back to winning form last start. Hugh Bowman boots Wunderbar home last start. Group Three National Day Cup (1,000m) winner Beauty Waves will make his stable debut for Tony Cruz after transferring from Pierre Ng Pang-chi's yard, while Aurora Lady, Full Credit, Red Elegance and Stellar Express round out the field. Mark Newnham admits he is guarded about Full Credit's first run since undergoing throat surgery in March to correct a breathing problem. 'You don't find out until you put them under race pressure,' Newnham said of the four-time winner, who comfortably won a dirt trial last week. 'He's been a really consistent horse at each of the tracks, including the all-weather, but Saturday will be a test for him.' With regular rider Lyle Hewitson sidelined with wrist and ankle injuries sustained in a Valley fall on Wednesday night, Full Credit will be ridden by Matthew Chadwick on Saturday. Jockey Andrea Atzeni and trainer Mark Newnham with Mojave Desert after his recent dirt victory. Newnham has more confidence in his two-pronged attack on Saturday's Class Three Shek Sheung River Handicap (1,650m), with Mojave Desert and New Forest both chasing back-to-back victories on the dirt. 'Mojave Desert looks like he'll run out 1,650m. He's just got to be ridden quietly,' Newnham said. 'The other horse will be up front, so we've got two irons in the fire there with two different racing styles. Hopefully it works out and they run one-two.' Mojave Desert has drawn barrier one with Derek Leung Ka-chun on board, while Harry Bentley replaces Hewitson on New Forest, who jumps from barrier seven.
