Guardrails and streetlights planned for Jitra road, says Zahid
The Deputy Prime Minister said he had been briefed by the Public Works Department (JKR) on infrastructure upgrades for the road, which connects Jitra to Jerlun.
'We will discuss with JKR the installation of guardrails along the riverbank. I will look into installing streetlights in the area as well as other poorly lit locations.
'As the chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Road Safety and Traffic Congestion, I will inform the relevant ministers for immediate action to be taken,' he told reporters after visiting Putri Qisya Nur Izzat Mohamad Azim at Kampung Bohor Karang yesterday.
The 12-year-old is the eldest daughter of Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, 32, and Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31, who perished along with their four children when their car plunged into Sungai Korok on Saturday.
Ahmad Zahid said Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) will support Putri Qisya's education all the way to the university level.
'MRSM (Mara Junior Science College) is ready to accept her next year, and her grandmother has agreed to enrol her.
'All necessary assistance will be provided, and we will do our best to secure her future,' he said.
Earlier in Kangar, the Deputy Prime Minister said the proposed University of Kuala Lumpur Asia Sustainable Transportation Institute (UniKL-ASTI) in Lembah Chuping will become a key component in the logistics development ecosystem under the Northern Corridor Economic Region.
He said the university campus, to be developed next to the Perlis Inland Port, will position the state as a new strategic logistics hub in the northern region of the country.
The campus will offer various high-impact Technical and Vocational Education and Trai-ning (TVET) diploma and degree programmes such as heavy vehicle maintenance technology, lifting equipment management and MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) technology.
'The establishment of UniKL-ASTI is a meaningful and strategic move not only for Perlis, but also for the national education and logistics landscape.
'I am confident this industry-orientated approach will not only produce competent TVET graduates ready to enter the job market but also directly contribute to the economic growth of the state and the nation,' he said at the groundbreaking ceremony for the UniKL-ASTI, which was officiated by the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, Bernama reported.

He will also meet with business leaders from the ASEAN New Zealand Business Council (ANZBC) and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE). His programme includes a session with the Maori community in Rotorua and a meeting with 250 Malaysians living in New Zealand. Ahmad Zahid making five-day working visit to New Zealand
AUCKLAND: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's working visit to New Zealand from July 14-18 will chart a new course in strengthening bilateral ties. High Commissioner of Malaysia to New Zealand Mazita Marzuki (pic) described the five-day working visit by Ahmad Zahid as apt and timely. "The visit is very timely as New Zealand is pivoting their economic trajectory towards Asean. "The Deputy Prime Minister's visit is not only apt with regard to Malaysia's aspirations but also that of New Zealand," she said in a press conference here on Sunday (July 13). She noted that New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon visited Malaysia in September 2024. She added that bilateral follow-up talks between Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and his New Zealand counterpart Winston Peters were held at the sidelines of the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting on July 10, 2025. She said during his five-day visit, Ahmad Zahid will meet his New Zealand counterpart David Seymour and New Zealand's Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro. The Deputy Prime Minister will also be meeting several other ministers, including New Zealand's Agriculture, Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay and Maori Development Minister Tama Potaka. MOHE introducing special pathway for community college graduates to pursue studies
KUALA LUMPUR: The Higher Education Ministry is providing a special pathway for new graduates of community colleges to further their studies at polytechnic and university levels in technical fields. Its minister, Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir, said this aims to provide better career progression opportunities for graduates of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes upon completing their studies at community colleges. "In the past, they might have been limited to applying to technical universities alone. "Now, we are opening up opportunities for them to continue their education at a higher level, whether at other universities or polytechnics, based on their qualifications and the courses they have completed," he said. Zambry, who is Umno Supreme Council member, said this when met by reporters after opening the Setiawangsa Umno delegates meeting here today. He said the ministry is also formulating a new policy to review the effectiveness of community colleges in producing skilled local talent by ensuring the courses offered are aligned with current industry needs. Additionally, the ministry is also assessing the feasibility of establishing community colleges in urban areas to expand access to technical education and skills training, he said. Earlier, Setiawangsa Umno Chief Datuk Seri Dr Izudin Ishak, in his speech, urged the government to establish more educational institutions in the Setiawangsa area, suggesting that at least one community college be set up, to serve as a catalyst for human capital development, particularly for local youth. – Bernama
