‘We just want to know that she's safe' — Mother of missing West Jordan teen speaks out

Yahoo12-06-2025

WEST JORDAN, Utah (ABC4) — The mother of the has spoken out about her worries about her daughter's disappearance.
Sophia Rojas, 15, was last seen on June 3, and she has had no contact with her friends or family since, according to West Jordan police. She was last seen wearing a grey suit and pants.
Police believe that she may be with an adult, and she may be lying about her age.

Her mother, Porscha Chavez, spoke to ABC4.com about her daughter's disappearance.
'She took off in the middle of the night, and I haven't heard from her or seen her since,' she said.
Chavez told ABC4.com that Sophia left a note, but that the first sentence of the note didn't sound like her.
The note said, 'Don't jump into getting the police involved.' The rest of the note said that she had a place to stay, not to worry about her, and not to be mad, that she would be back eventually.
Chavez believes that she is with an adult because she left in the middle of the night on a school night and none of her usual circle of friends have heard from her.
Sophia also has a history of talking to adults online and lying about her age, Chavez said. Chavez took Sophia's phone away in February for that reason.
'I do feel like she's possibly been groomed. I think that she feels like it's not gonna happen to her, and that she'll be okay, and she has the teenager mindset of nothing's gonna happen to her and she knows everything and she's fine,' she said.
Chavez told ABC4.com that she is able to see that Sophia has a different phone signed into her Google account, and Chavez does not know where that phone came from. She is able to see that it is logged in, but she cannot see its location.

Chavez also shared her biggest worries about the situation her daughter is in.
'My concerns are that she's with an adult, who may be feeding things to her, and possibly, now that this is getting awareness and stuff, that they may not let her go if she wants to go home,' Chavez said.
She also told ABC4.com that she feels like Sophia's case is not getting the attention it deserves because her daughter is not white.
Chavez shared what she wants Sophia to hear from her. 'Come home,' she said. 'We just want to know that she's safe, and we want her back home safely.'
West Jordan Police are asking that anyone with information about Sophia Rojas contact 801-256-2000 and reference case WJ25-27102.

Iran's judiciary says at least 71 killed in Israel's attack on Tehran's notorious Evin prison

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran's judiciary says at least 71 people were killed in Israel's attack Monday on Tehran's Evin prison, a notorious facility where many political activists have been held. Judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir posted on the office's official Mizan news agency website Sunday that those killed included staff, soldiers, prisoners and members of visiting families. The June 23 attack hit several prison buildings and prompted concerns from rights groups about the safety of the inmates. Iran had not previously announced any death figures, though on Sunday confirmed that top prosecutor Ali Ghanaatkar, whose prosecution of dissidents, including Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, led to widespread criticism by human rights groups, had been killed in the attack and would be buried at a shrine in Qom. Calgary police say eight injured after equipment falls at outdoor market

CALGARY - Police in Calgary say eight people were injured when equipment at a temporary African market outside City Hall collapsed. A news release from police says seven adults and one youth were taken to hospital Saturday, all with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say they were called to the plaza outside City Hall around 3 p.m. where the Naija Market Day was being held, and they say a light standard and TV screens had fallen. The markets are held throughout Canada and are billed on the events' website as celebrating Nigerian culture in Canada, 'offering authentic products, (and) vibrant music, while attendees experience the local Nigeria market.' Naija Market Day organizers did not immediately respond to questions about the equipment collapse. Police say organizers held the appropriate permits to operate the event within the plaza. Temporary lane closures were implemented along Macleod Trail near City Hall, but the roads have since reopened. Police say they and Occupational Health and Safety officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapsed equipment. Suicide bombing in Pakistan kills 8 soldiers and wounds 25 people

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A suicide bombing in northwest Pakistan on Saturday killed at least eight soldiers and injured 25 people, including civilians, officials said. The attack targeted a military vehicle in North Waziristan around lunchtime despite a curfew across the tribal district to facilitate the movement of security forces, the intelligence officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the issue with the media. The wounded were 25 soldiers and 10 civilians, including children, the officials said. Footage of the blast in Khadi village showed bandaged children lying on the floor near shattered glass and debris. The intelligence officials did not say what caused the blast and there was no immediate claim of responsibility. However, the Pakistani Taliban and other armed groups operate out of the country's northwest. Under the curfew, the main roads from Bannu to Miranshah and up to the Afghan border were closed to traffic. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request.
