Mets hitting coach, ex-Yankees player tabbed as potential Aaron Boone replacement
The New York Yankees have not played their best baseball since the start of June. They are 21-24 since June 1, and Aaron Boone could be on the hot seat. While there has been no indication that the Yankees are looking to move on from Boone, and a change at manager is highly unlikely, some fans are clamoring for a change. Boone is under contract through 2027, but FanSided's Jake Elman tabbed Eric Chavez as a potential replacement if the Yankees do fire Boone. "Chavez has been both a hitting coach and bench coach with the Mets, and he's previously publicly expressed a desire to manage," wrote Elman. "With that said, we need to ask if the Yankees would again consider someone with zero managerial experience. In fairness to Boone, his managerial issues had far more to do with personality and loyalty to players than him having never coached before. Chavez checks most boxes, though, and he doesn't turn 48 until December. Perhaps age would work in his favor." Brian Cashman has only ever had to hire two managers, Boone and Joe Girardi. Both were former Yankees. Chaves also played for the Yankees for two seasons. "Even the most loyal Yankees fans might forget that Chavez spent two seasons in the Bronx, batting .274 with 18 homers, 63 RBIs, and a .783 OPS from 2011-12," wrote Elman. "He also infamously went hitless in 16 at-bats during the 2012 playoffs. More recently, Chavez joined the Yankees as an assistant hitting coach in December 2021 before the Mets hired him away two weeks later."Boone is 659-475 as the Yankees manager since 2018. However, he is 22-23 in the postseason and has taken the Yankees to just one World Series. They have won the division three times under Boone. More MLB:

Jesse Chavez, most traded player in MLB history, retires after Braves designate him for assignment
Pitcher Jesse Chavez is retiring after 18 major-league seasons. The right-handed reliever was designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves last week for the third time this season. After clearing waivers, he opted for free agency and subsequently decided to retire. Chavez, who will turn 42 on Aug. 21, pitched for nine teams during his MLB career. That includes three stints with the Braves, for whom he played the past four seasons. He compiled a career 4.27 ERA in 657 appearances (1,142 innings) while averaging 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings. In his final season with Atlanta, Chavez had a 9.00 ERA in four appearances, allowing 8 runs, 14 hits (four of them home runs) and 5 walks in eight innings. Chavez's claim to fame might ultimately be that he was the most traded player in MLB history. The bespectacled reliever was dealt 10 times during his career. His transactions page on Baseball-Reference is nearly a novel. The last of those trades was in 2022, when he was one of two players the Braves dealt to the Los Angeles Angels for Raisel Iglesias. Chavez announced his retirement Thursday on "Foul Territory." He said he hasn't picked up a baseball since his last game, which was July 13 against the St. Louis Cardinals. In that one, he allowed four runs and six hits in two innings. "As of now, I don't think we're gonna keep going," Chavez said. "This is it. Time to turn the page, focus on the next chapter in life and go help all the young kids, all the stuff that I did so that they don't have to take two steps backwards and take those three steps forward." Chavez was drafted in the 39th round by the Chicago Cubs in 2001 but opted to pitch in college. He was selected the following year by the Texas Rangers in the 42nd round and was traded for the first time to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2006. He made his MLB debut two years later. The list of teams Chavez played for and in which seasons is as follows: Pittsburgh Pirates (2008-09)Atlanta Braves (2010, 2021, 2022-25)Kansas City Royals (2010-11)Toronto Blue Jays (2012)Oakland Athletics (2012-15)Los Angeles Dodgers (2016)Los Angeles Angels (2017, 2022)Chicago Cubs (2018, 2022)Texas Rangers (2018-2020)

RHP Jesse Chavez announces retirement after 18 seasons
(Photo credit: D. Ross Cameron-Imagn Images) After 657 appearances over 18 seasons with nine different clubs, right-hander Jesse Chavez announced his retirement Thursday. The final appearance for the 41-year-old came July 13 for the Atlanta Braves against the St. Louis Cardinals. Chavez was traded 11 times in his career, the most of any player in MLB history. 'As of now, I don't think we're going to keep going,' Chavez said on Foul Territory. 'Time to turn the page and focus on the next chapter of life, and go help all the young kids so they don't have to take two steps back to take three steps forward.' Chavez went 51-66 with a 4.27 ERA during his career and had nine saves with 1,044 strikeouts in 1,142 innings. The Los Angeles-area native started his career in 2008 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and also pitched for the Braves, Kansas City Royals, Toronto Blue Jays, Oakland Athletics, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs. He pitched in four games for the Braves this season, when he went 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in eight innings. Chavez first pitched for the Braves in 2010 and then returned to the organization in 2021, when he won his only World Series ring. He had three separate stints with Atlanta this season alone. 'This has been a great ride and way more than I ever expected from a 42nd-round draft pick,' Chavez said. 'I was given a gift early on, I understood but it was, 'How am I going to make it last?''
