Naperville North junior forward Brooke Welch's high school career was interrupted shortly after it began.
When she was a freshman, Welch suffered a torn ACL just five minutes into the season opener against Barrington. Two other freshmen, Michelle Ruan and Claire DeCook, suffered the same season-ending injuries that year.
All three returned the following season, when Welch switched from defender to forward and endeared herself to teammates and coaches.
'Brooke is such a special player,' Naperville North senior defender Emily Buescher said. 'When she comes onto the field, you know that she's going to do exactly what she's asked and she's going to be exactly where we need her to be.'
That was the case again during the Class 3A state semifinals at North Central College in Naperville on Friday.
Welch won the ball on the right wing and sent a perfect cross to the Tennessee-bound DeCook, who scored with 24:18 left in the first half. That was the first of DeCook's two goals in the Huskies' 2-1 win against Lane.
'It was a great goal,' Welch said. 'I trust my teammates to get in the box anytime anyone gets end line, so I knew someone would be there.
'I just took a quick glance, and I saw that Claire was there. She's proved that she can score, so it was great to be able to play that to her and her finish it. It was nice to see it hit the back of the net, especially in a game as big as this.'
Welch's stats don't stand out. She has two goals and one assist for Naperville North (17-5-3), which advanced to play O'Fallon (22-1-1) in the state championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday. But one of her goals was the difference in the Huskies' 1-0 win over Oswego in a regional final.
'She's a kid who will do a 5-yard sprint into the fence, so I think for her to get that (assist) is everything,' Buescher said. 'It was her fulfilling her role. In the sense of our team, she's never been an overlooked player because she is so incredibly special in doing what she's supposed to do.'
That's exactly what Welch did to set up DeCook's first goal.
'The defender had the ball at first, and she had to battle to get it back,' DeCook said. 'A lot of people would be just be like, 'Oh, I lost the ball,' and they give up there. But you can always expect Brooke to work hard. It's just that continuous fight throughout the game.'
Naperville North coach Steve Goletz loves that.
'Brooke is an incredible kid who gives us such a spark,' Goletz said. 'She's an absolutely selfless kid.
'She gives everything to her teammates, and we're not playing in this game if she doesn't score the goal against Oswego. We're so lucky to have so many kids like Brooke.'
Welch said she's lucky to have support from people like her brother Bryce, a former point guard for Naperville North who just completed his freshman year at Iowa Central. He was a fixture at his sister's games last year and was in attendance Friday.
'It was so great to have my brother here to watch me,' Brooke Welch said. 'I picked No. 3 because he was No. 3, so it was nice in a semifinal game to be able to wear his number. He's my best friend and biggest fan.'
Bryce Welch was beaming with pride Friday.
'She played great today,' he said. 'It means a lot to be able to see her go out there and do her thing, do what she likes to do.'
Bryce Welch never played soccer, but he often served as goalkeeper for his sister's practice sessions and always was ready to give sound advice.
'It was mostly just don't compare yourself to other people when you're trying to get better, especially at a younger age, because she was always younger than me,' he said. 'For her, I always wanted to make it about taking it one day at a time.'
Brooke Welch played basketball until she got to high school. There were many days she would play against her brother.
'Bryce and I have always been super competitive,' she said. 'Having an older brother and all his friends around, I feel like I was bound to play a sport,
'It was nice to be able to play with him and learn from him. So I feel like my competitive side definitely comes from competing with my brother.'
Now Brooke Welch has a chance to do something her brother didn't — win a state title.
'She battled back so hard from her injury,' Bryce Welch said. 'So to see her with a chance to win a championship is huge.'

More championship bout during the UFC 236 event at State Farm Arena on April 13, 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) Dustin Poirier (30-9-0-1) has been a UFC fighter since 2011. At the time he had a 7-1 record. Between 2011 and 2018, Poirier went 16-4-0-1, picking up notable wins over Max Holloway, Bobby Green, Jim Miller, Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje, and Eddie Alvarez. His losses during that stretch came to The Korean Zombie, Cub Swanson, Conor McGregor, and Michael Johnson. Poirier's wins over Miller, Pettis, Gaethje, and Alvarez set him up to fight for the interim UFC lightweight title against then-UFC featherweight titleholder Max Holloway. Poirier was the No. 3 ranked fighter in the UFC 155-pound division at the time, April 2019. Poirier claimed the interim crown with a decision win. In September 2019, Poirier faced Khabib Nurmagomedov in a title unification bout. Nurmagomedov won that contest by third-round submission. Three wins after that, including two TKO victories over Conor McGregor, put Poirier in another lightweight title fight. He lost that battle to Charles Oliveira, falling to a rear-naked choke in the third round of their December 2021 matchup. The 36-year-old Poirier is 2-2 since that setback with wins over Michael Chandler and Benoit Saint Denis. Poirier's losses during that run came against Justin Gaethje for the BMF title and, most recently, opposite Islam Makhachev for the UFC lightweight title at UFC 302 in June 2024. Poirier has 15 fight-night bonus awards, which ties him for fourth all-time in that category. Poirier is the No. 5 ranked UFC lightweight. More championship bout during the UFC 236 event at State Farm Arena on April 13, 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) Max Holloway (26-8) has been with the UFC since 2012. If there's a stat that the UFC tracks, chances are Holloway is among the leaders. He holds the UFC featherweight record for wins (20), finishes (11), knockouts (nine), win streak (13 straight), total fight time (6:58:57), significant strikes landed (2,971), and total strikes landed (3,180). Holloway's overall UFC records include significant strikes landed (3,457) and total strikes landed (3,706). Holloway's run as UFC featherweight champ began in June 2017 when he knocked out Jose Aldo. Holloway entered that contest as the interim champ, a belt he won by knocking out Anthony Pettis in December 2016. He defended his title against Aldo (TKO), Brian Ortega (TKO), and Frankie Edgar (decision). He also attempted to win the interim UFC lightweight belt during that run, but he fell short, dropping a decision to Dustin Poirier. Holloway's championship run ended in December 2019 when Alexander Volkanovski beat him by decision. Volkanovski retained the title in an immediate rematch. Wins over Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez earned Holloway another shot at Volkanovski and his title in July 2022, but the champ retained his belt with a decision win. Holloway followed that setback with wins over Arnold Allen, the Korean Zombie, and Justin Gaethje. The Gaethje victory, a fight that many voted 'Fight of the Year' and 'Knockout of the Year,' earned Holloway the BMF title. That fight took place at 155 pounds. Holloway followed his BMF title win with the first knockout loss of his career, falling to Ilia Topuria in a UFC featherweight title fight in October 2024. Holloway is the No. 1 fighter in the official UFC featherweight rankings. He is also ranked at No. 12 at 155 pounds and sits at No. 12 in the pound-for-pound rankings. UFC 318: Holloway Vs. They first met in a featherweight scrap at UFC 143 in February 2012. The bout was Holloway's fifth pro fight and first as a member of the UFC. He was 4-0 heading into the contest. Meanwhile, Poirier had been with the WEC/UFC for two years by then with a 11-1 pro record. Poirier won that fight, and earned Submission of the Night, for his first-round triangle armbar stoppage. Poirier won that 'Fight of the Night' bonus-winning scrap. Poirier failed to unify the title, losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov by submission at UFC 242 in September 2019. We will have more on the UFC schedule for July 2025 as each event nears, as well as results on fight night.

Will Cooper Flagg be Mavericks' point guard until Kyrie Irving returns from injury?

The post Will Cooper Flagg be Mavericks' point guard until Kyrie Irving returns from injury? appeared first on ClutchPoints. Kyrie Irving is likely going to take over the Dallas Mavericks' starting point guard role at some point in the 2025-26 season. To begin the campaign, though, Irving will be unavailable as he recovers from ACL surgery. The Mavs have been rumored to be interested in adding a point guard this offseason as a result. During 2025 No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg's introductory press conference on Friday, however, head coach Jason Kidd said the rookie could spend some time at the position. Advertisement 'I don't look at the position, I want to put him at the point guard,' Kidd told reporters. 'I want to make him uncomfortable and see how he reacts being able to run the show.' Kidd said Flagg could play multiple positions, though. 'Being able to play the two, play the three, he's comfortable playing that,' the Mavs head coach continued. 'But we want to push. I think he's going to respond in a positive way. It's alright to fail. It's alright to turn the ball over, we talked about that.' Kidd doesn't seem to be confirming that Flagg will be the Mavericks' point guard during the 2025-26 season with these comments. Rather, he is saying that he wants to challenge Flagg, which placing him at point guard would do. There is a realistic chance that Cooper will spend some time at the one during the 2025-26 campaign. Advertisement 'Cooper… can handle the ball,' Kidd added. 'As we go forward this summer and throughout the season… Try to get the ball in his hands as much as possible so that he can become comfortable running our offense. And then when you have multiple guys out there that can dribble and pass it just makes the game simple and easy.' The Mavericks may add a starting caliber point guard to run the offense with Irving out. If not, Dallas will likely implement a number of different players at the point guard spot. Either way, the Mavs will need to find an answer for the first couple of months of the year. Kyrie Irving could return in January. His return will be pivotal as Dallas hopes to make a championship run. However, playing a quality brand of basketball early in the season amid his injury absence will unquestionably be important. First but not last: 2026 wide receiver commits to Alabama over SEC, Big Ten schools

Alabama football has picked up its first commitment at wide receiver from the class of 2026. Three-star Tennessee receiver Owen Cabell announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide on Monday. Listed as 6-foot-3, 201 pounds, Cabell chose Alabama over a number of SEC and Big Ten schools, including Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Vanderbilt. Advertisement The addition of Cabell gives Alabama 15 hard commitments in the class of 2026. Cabell, who plays for Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville, is the seventh offensive player to commit to coach Kalen DeBoer, whose team has risen significantly in the various industry recruiting rankings after a big month in June. In the past week alone, Alabama has landed 5-star EDGE Xavier Griffin from Gainesville (Ga.), 5-star running back Ezavier Crowell (Jackson, Ala.), 4-star tight end Mack Sutter from Dunlap, Ill., and 3-star recruits Javari Barnett (running back, Tampa), Rihyael Kelley (safety, Cincinnati) and Zay Hall (linebacker; Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa). After the Crimson Tide's recent run in recruiting, 247Sports ranks Alabama with the No. 8 overall class in 2026. On3 has them at No. 9. Cabell is ranked as the No. 939 overall recruit in 2026 by On3, which lists him as the nation's 145th wide receiver. He recently clocked a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash, according to a video shared to social media. At wide receiver, DeBoer and staff are also targeting 5-star in-state recruit Cederian Morgan from Alexander City and 3-star Sunshine State target Brian Williams out of Orlando.
