Gracenote reports significant increase in sports content on global SVOD services in Q1 2025

More sports added to four of the five leading services; big increases for Disney+ and Netflix
NEW YORK, Feb. 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Gracenote, the content data business unit of Nielsen, has reported that the streaming industry's leading global subscription video on-demand (SVOD) services, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, Netflix and Paramount+, have significantly grown their sports programming over the last quarter. These five providers collectively increased sports programs by more than 72% in the recent quarter, underscoring the value of sports as a driver of live, real-time viewership and critical component of their content strategies. This key insight, along with others, are captured in the latest update to the Gracenote Data Hub which provides a snapshot of global SVOD programming to illuminate content trends and changes over time.
Since the first Data Hub release in November 2024, sports programming, including exclusive NFL games, WWE RAW events, U.S. Open tennis tournament matches and more, has become increasingly available across streaming platforms. Notably, four of the five SVOD services tracked by Gracenote have bolstered their sports programming, led by Disney+ and Netflix, with increases of 471% and nearly 100%, respectively. While Apple TV+ did not increase its sports content in the recent quarter, that will change as the new MLS and MLB seasons get underway and live games air on the service.
Tapping Gracenote Global Video Data, the industry's most comprehensive database of TV show and movie information, the Gracenote Data Hub highlights video trends in a series of data visualizations that provide insight into the SVOD catalogs of Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, Netflix and Paramount+. On a quarter-over-quarter basis, these services have added 6.7% more content to their catalogs, with increases of 5.4% and 7.6% for TV and movies, respectively.
Other highlights in the update include:
The increase in content across global SVOD services includes approximately 3,000 movies, 2,000 TV shows and 500 sports shows.
A dramatic increase in sports programming on Disney+, largely the result of adding select ESPN programming, has shifted the distribution of sports programming across the five services.
Disney+ now accounts for nearly 33% of available sports programming, just behind Amazon (35%), which previously distributed 54% of sports programming.
Netflix accounts for just over 23% of sports programming.
Overall, Amazon Prime Video remains the largest distributor of video content, offering nearly 69% of the available programming, up from 67.8% in Q1 2024.
An increase in French content and a notable decrease in content produced in India on Disney+ has made France the third-biggest producer, accounting for 5.6% of the total.
Drama remains the top genre across the five services, but it has dropped from the No. 1 position on Disney+, where it has been overtaken by documentary, comedy, children and adventure.
'Live sports programming continues to be an important driver of user growth, retention and engagement for streaming services,' said Bill Michels, Chief Product Officer at Gracenote. 'We are also seeing that relevant metadata, such as synopses, scores, highlights and imagery have the power to help streamers build world-class user experiences that keep users engaged beyond the live game.'
Gracenote program metadata covers 40M+ titles in 260+ streaming catalogs in 35 languages and 80+ countries. The same metadata that powers the user experiences of the world's biggest and most innovative TV providers also enables data-driven decision-making to help content distributors and owners succeed amid rapid change. Jussie Smollett to speak in Netflix documentary about hate crime hoax

Jussie Smollett's alleged hate crime hoax is the subject of an upcoming Netflix documentary. The streamer announced Tuesday that 'The Truth About Jussie Smollett?' will be released on the platform Aug. 22, according to Deadline. Producers of the true-crime hits 'Tinder Swindler,' 'Trainwreck' and 'Don't F**k with Cats' are behind the 90-minute project, comprised of interviews with police officials, lawyers, journalists and Smollett himself. The film centers on the yearslong legal saga launched by Chicago investigators, who determined the 'Empire' actor staged a 2019 hate crime attack as a 'publicity stunt' to advance his career. The documentary has been described as the 'shocking true story of an allegedly fake story that some now say might just be a true story.' In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, director Gagan Rehill said the film 'is a thrilling ride, and we were lucky enough to have access to the key players.' Smollett claimed in January 2019 that unknown assailants attacked him on a Chicago street, punching him in the face, pouring a chemical substance on him and putting a noose around his neck while yelling racial and homophobic slurs. Two brothers associated with Smollett, Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, later confessed to having been involved in a scheme orchestrated by the openly gay actor to make it look as though he'd been accosted by Trump-supporting extremists. The 43-year-old NAACP Image Award winner was arrested and later found guilty on a handful of charges related to the incident. He was sentenced to 150 days in jail in 2022, but was released after six days pending an appeal. His conviction was overturned last November as part of a plea deal with prosecutors in exchange for community service and the forfeiture of his $10,000 bond. Smollett, who has always denied any wrongdoing, also agreed to donate at least $50,000 to Chicago's Building Better Futures Center for the Arts organization to resolve the city's lawsuit against him. _____

HBCU HC Building Legacy as He Nears 100 Career Wins

"There were moments I didn't know if I'd ever coach again," said Virginia State Head Coach Henry Frazier III. "Now I'm sitting at 98 wins-and I want that hundred." One hundred wins will cement his legacy as an HBCU coaching icon. For Frazier, the climb to 100 wins is about more than the number. It's about redemption, proving HBCU coaches belong in any conversation, and honoring the path he's walked-from Bowie to Prairie View, from the sidelines to the classroom. "That's something I want, you know, from a personal standpoint," he added. "It's something I've worked toward my whole career." "I am proud, man, proud. I couldn't be more happy for Lamar," Frazier said, referring to Lamar Manigo, the former Bowie State quarterback who played under him and eventually joined his staff. "It's not just a branch. I recruited him out of high school." That branch is part of a vast coaching tree. "We did a survey a few years ago… over 83 or 84 guys that I've coached are coaching now," he said. "I love to see boys go to men. That's my 'why.'" Henry Frazier III calls it guided discovery. "I want you to have that aha moment. And when it happens, you're gonna know. I'm gonna know. And I'm gonna say job well done." Frazier's reach spans every level of education. "I mentor middle school boys… I write children's books… and I recruit high school guys to college," he said. "From kindergarten to a college graduate, I have an impact on young people." He chairs the fatherhood and mentoring program for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, working with youth at Ernest Everett Just Middle School. "That's been so rewarding," he said. "I'm an educator. I got my degree in education." Off the field, Frazier finds time to recharge. "I chase the white ball on the golf course. Some days I binge-watch Netflix. That's how I stay strong." After last season's 7–4 finish, Frazier knows expectations are high. "We play the top five teams… Fayetteville, Smith, Winston, Union, and Bowie," he said. "We have no room for error." He owns last year's late-season dip. "We lost four football games by 13 points. That's on me. Just bad coaching after the bye week. I won't make that mistake again." With five quarterbacks competing to replace Mello, Frazier has his eye on one name. "If we get the right guy in there, which I think we have in R.J. Matthews… we're gonna be a tough out." And if older players don't step up? "You'll see a bunch of freshmen playing," he warned. "Because the goal is to win a championship." "We're good football coaches," Frazier said with conviction about his HBCU counterparts. "A lot of the white schools look at us and think that we can't coach ball. We're gonna just keep proving them wrong." Then, after a pause, he added: "I'm not chasing a number-I'm chasing impact. If a hundred wins gets me one more young man who believes in himself, then I've done my job." The post HBCU HC Building Legacy as He Nears 100 Career Wins appeared first on HBCU Gameday.
