Another Broncos player on verge of exit as moves for teammates expose harsh reality
Michael Maguire's men have recently locked down captain Adam Reynolds, centre Kotoni Staggs and emerging hooker Blake Mozer after the trio signed contract extensions. And the club also has a large chunk of its cap tied up in big-money deals for superstars Reece Walsh, Payne Haas, Patrick Carrigan, Ezra Mam and veteran Ben Hunt.
The situation has already seen Cobbo agree to join the Dolphins next year after the Broncos were only able to offer the former Maroons star a $300,000 deal, despite the fact he's on double that this season. And Paix looks like being the next player squeezed out of the club due to salary cap constraints, unless he's willing to take a $150,000 paycut.
Paix - who has impressed as Brisbane's starting No.9 for large parts of this season - is currently on a deal worth around $300,000 per year. But reports that the hooker would have to accept a 50% paycut to remain at Red Hill beyond this season, with the Gold Coast Titans emerging as a potential landing spot for the Brisbane junior. The extension for Paix would only represent a fraction more than the NRL's minimum wage of around $130,000, leaving his exit almost inevitable.
The 25-year-old started the season as Brisbane's first-choice No.9 and has been largely used as Brisbane's starting hooker over Billy Walters, who is contracted until the end of next season. Hunt's return from injury has also complicated the hooker situation, with Paix dropped from Brisbane's 17-man squad last round to rest an elbow complaint and the veteran handed the No.9 jersey.
Ben Hunt hopes Cory Paix stays at Broncos amid cap squeeze
However, Hunt says he hopes the Broncos and his 'well-loved' teammate can come to an agreement to extend his time at the club, after hailing Paix's contributions this season. 'Cory has been excellent for us this year,' Hunt told The Courier Mail.
'He's just a little bull terrier. He just rips into his work. He's fit as all hell and he knows the game well. I actually do feel for him a bit (being in limbo). 'Paixy' is a really good clubman, too. He's well-loved around the place and just a great contributor to the club.'

Paix was reportedly close to agreeing an extension at the club earlier this year and Maguire indicated that he wanted the hooker to stay. However, those negotiations were put on the backburners as Brisbane prioritised other deals, even though the 25-year-old Brisbane junior made it clear he didn't want to leave a club that "means the world" to him.
Speaking about his future at the end of May, Paix accepted the harsh truth that he may have no option but to leave the club. "I would love to be a Bronco for life but sometimes in life you don't always get what you want," the 25-year-old said at the time. "I need to go out and play some good footy first before I get a contract."

Broncos' last 100-yard running back retires after 11 NFL seasons
Latavius Murray is hanging up his cleats. The 35-year-old running back officially announced his retirement from the NFL on his Instagram page after 11 seasons. The former Pro Bowler walks away from the game with 8,172 yards from scrimmage and 61 touchdowns on his resume. Murray entered the league as a sixth-round pick out of UCF with the Oakland Raiders in 2013. He later spent time with the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos and Buffalo Bills. Murray rushed 15 times for 103 yards and one touchdown in Denver's 31-28 season finale win over the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022. That marks the last time the Broncos have had a single running back rush for 100 yards in a single game, a feat that is yet to happen in the Sean Payton era. Murray rushed 160 times for 703 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games (seven starts) in Denver in 2022. One year later, Javonte Williams had 774 yards and three scores in 16 games. Last season, Williams led the team with 513 yards and four scores in 17 games. The Broncos' backfield should get a boost this season following the arrival of veteran J.K. Dobbins and rookie RJ Harvey. For at least another month, though, Murray will remain the most recent Denver running back to rush for 100 yards in a single game. NFL.com projects Broncos defense to be best in NFL for 2025
Good morning, Broncos Country! The Denver Broncos defense took a giant step forward last season. After finishing the 2023 regular season as the 27th-ranked defense in points allowed, the unit catapulted to No. 3. There's no question the Broncos had one of the best defenses in the NFL. Denver led the league in sacks and EPA (expected points added). How good the Broncos defense was is one of the main reasons they finished the regular season with a winning record and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since winning Super Bowl 50. Now, Denver's defense could be even better this year. An analyst for the NFL website projects the Broncos to have the best defense in the league this season. Beating out the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and the Baltimore Ravens. As the story notes, Denver returns 14 of its top 15 players in defensive snaps. The lone loss is middle linebacker Cody Barton. Plus, the Broncos signed Talanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw in NFL free agency and selected cornerback Jahdae Barron in the first round of the NFL Draft. 'So, the group that led the league in sacks and defensive EPA (expected points added) just got better.' You can read the rest of the analysis and reasons why Denver is ranked as the best defense heading into the regular season, but I agree with this projection. This defense is loaded, especially if Greenlaw can return to form and stay healthy. Knowing how good that unit is for them will make the lives of Bo Nix, Sean Payton, and the Broncos' offense a little easier. And let's not forget that Denver's offense will be even better this season as well, with the additions of Evan Engram and R.J. Harvey. For what it's worth, the same analyst projects the Broncos offense as the sixth-ranked in the NFL. For the first time in a decade, Denver has the chance for a fun and special season. Worlds Day 5: Summer McIntosh Wins Third Consecutive Medal With A Record
Summer McIntosh is only two medals away from matching Michael Phelps' record. On the fifth day in Singapore, McIntosh claimed her third individual world title of the meet, winning the 200 fly. Closing in on the oldest record in women's swimming, the Canadian swimming star posted an impressive time of 2:01.99. Her performance was about 0.18 seconds off of the super-suited world record (2:01.81) set by China's Liu Zige in 2009. "Going into tonight, my coach and I, our big goal was to break that world record," McIntosh stated as she opened up about training for the event. According to the 18-year-old, she "messed up" during the final lap of the race, which led to her missing the record by "a little." McIntosh's first performance under the 2:02 sub still helped her set a new personal best, surpassing the championship record of 2:03.41 set by Australia's Jessicah Schipper at the 2009 World Championships. She is also now the second-fastest swimmer in the category, besting her previous Canadian record set at trials in June. "Happy with the time and the PB (personal best), but I didn't reach my goal tonight. Happy with the gold, happy with the win and just going to keep pushing forward." McIntosh was followed by 200 fly Olympic silver medalist Regan Smith in 2:04.99. The American record holder in the fly is currently the only swimmer to enter the 2:05 sub alongside McIntosh. Australia's Elizabeth Dekkers claimed bronze in 2:06.12 after fighting hard in the final laps against 12-year-old Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi, who missed out on a podium finish in 2:06.43 After winning the 400 free and 200 IM, this performance helped McIntosh claim her third consecutive individual win, achieving more than half of her main aim from the eight-day event. The 18-year-old is inching closer to winning five individual gold medals at Worlds, a feat only achieved by Michael Phelps so far. Tomorrow, she will compete in the most challenging race of her schedule, the 800 free. She will gear up to again face world record holder Katie Ledecky, who holds the most top times in the free event and has posted consistent outings throughout the season. Notably, McIntosh, who will be participating in her first 800 free at a world stage, is the second fastest swimmer in the category, behind Ledecky. At the 2025 Canadian trials, McIntosh qualified for the event with the third-fastest time ever and shattered the Canadian record in the process. 'Heading into the 800 tomorrow and of course the 4 IM (400m individual medley) on the last day, I'm going to be really excited for it.' Summer McIntosh stated in the post-race interview.
