Broncos player tipped to emulate Payne Haas as teammate set for weeks on sideline
Broncos veteran Corey Jensen is expected to miss a number of weeks due to a blood clot with his teammates expecting Xavier Willison to step up in his absence. Jensen was a late withdrawal from the Broncos side to defeat the Bulldogs last week due to a calf injury. However, it has been reported Jensen endured a blood clot in the calf and will be expected to sit out a number of weeks to recover. And in his absence Willison made his mark on the game against the Bulldogs. Without Haas and Jensen, Willison stood up and played 68 minutes for his side in the shock victory. The 22-year-old ran for 203 metres and made 43 tackles in a barnstorming effort that saw Michael Maguire's side comeback from a 16-0 half-time deficit. Willison has been named to start alongside Haas this weekend, but doubt remains over whether the NSW forward will back-up after State of Origin. Regardless, Willison wants to lock down a starting role in Maguire's side as he looks to improve on his recent form. "I got that starting opportunity, so I really wanted to go out there and prove myself," Willison said. "It was more minutes and I just kept doing what I do usually ... run hard and tackle hard. I just think that it was my time to step up." And his teammates have noticed his recent efforts on the field. He is on blood thinners & air travel restrictions. — NRL PHYSIO (@nrlphysio) July 9, 2025 Broncos forward Kobe Hetherington has led the praise for Willison after his game last weekend. Hetherington has been impressed with the 22-year-old's ability this season and even compared him to arguably the best front-rower in the game. "Xavier Haas we are calling him. He stood up and is killing it with his defence and carries," Hetherington said. "If he keeps playing like that he will be a wrecking force in the NRL. He's just got to stay consistent. He is only young and it is scary to think where he can get to." Broncos fans may have an exciting forward pack developing with Willison joining elite front-rowers Patrick Carrigan and Haas this year. Despite his recent form, Willison is just taking it one game at a time and is looking forward to the Titans clash. "It's another chance to prove myself again and play some big minutes," he said. "I just have to play my game - what I have been doing - and try not to overthink it." Ben Hunt has also been named to take on the Titans this weekend. The veteran recruit injured himself against the Rabbitohs and hasn't played since round 10. The 35-year-old was playing five-eighth before his injury, but with Ezra Mam's return the veteran is expected to switch to dummy-half. Having played plenty of No.9 for Queensland in State of Origin, Hunt could add some more experience to the spine, before the utility comes on. "Everyone knows how good a player he is," Hetherington said of Hunt. "He is in the leadership group for a reason and brings that leadership, and all us younger fellas get around him. He is such a good talker and is tough as well. We have seen what he has done at Origin playing that hooker role, so if he can bring that back here the boys will be cheering."

Broncos cop brutal double blow as two players sidelined for at least four weeks
The Brisbane Broncos have been hit with a double blow ahead of Ben Hunt's return with Blake Mozer and Corey Jensen both expected to miss at least four weeks after injury setbacks. After Mozer recently re-signed to stay at the Broncos for another two years, but has not featured under Michael Maguire in the 2025 season. Unfortunately, it appears he will be battling to return before the end of the regular season having broken his jaw in the Queensland Cup game on the weekend. According to The Courier Mail, Mozer left the field for a HIA and didn't return. Although it appears Mozer fractured his jaw during the incident and could spend between six to eight weeks out. Mozer had only recently returned for the Broncos' feeder team after suffering a shoulder injury in pre-season. Mozer is considered a future star at No.9, but has not been used by Maguire so far this season. While Mozer is set for some time on the sideline, reports suggest so will Jensen. The forward was a late withdrawal from the Broncos side to face the Bulldogs last week. And it appears Maguire won't be able to call upon the front-rower after he recovers from Deep Vein Thrombosis. Billy Walters is expected to keep his position in the 17 after a strong few weeks. Kobe Hetherington was full of praise for Hunt ahead of his return. "Everyone knows how good a player he is," Hetherington said. "He is in the leadership group for a reason and brings that leadership, and all us younger fellas get around him. He is such a good talker and is tough as well. We have seen what he has done at Origin playing that hooker role, so if he can bring that back here the boys will be cheering." The Broncos are riding a wave of momentum after coming back from 18-0 down to defeat the Bulldogs last Thursday with a number if key players out due to injury and Origin. And Hetherington claimed the squad was feeling confident after the win. "That is one of the best wins I have been a part of in my career," Hetherington said. "Our back was on the fence in the first half and Madge (coach Michael Maguire) brought us in and said 'boys, keep sticking with it'. "In the first half I thought we defended well, and Madge said 'stay in it and we will get them the back end of the half'. We all believed. We had all those players out (due to Origin and injury) and everyone stood up. It was a good feeling."

‘The big fella had a few tears': Injuries inspire unsung Broncos' debutant
In a side decimated by players withdrawn for State of Origin duties, the Broncos are set to usher in an unheralded debutant for a crucial clash with the Bulldogs. Ben Talty arrived from the North Sydney Bears midseason on a train-and-trial deal through to the end of 2026, having amassed 85 games in the New South Wales Cup. Named at 19th man for Friday night, he will replace Corey Jensen, out with a calf injury. Talty's call-up continues coach Michael Maguire's habit of forging careers. 'We've got some good stories. Ben Talty came in here about a month ago, he's put his head down and is going to be on the bench,' Maguire said. 'He reminded me about how special rugby league is. Loading 'I was able to sit with him yesterday and talk about how he was going to debut. The big fella had a few tears and gave me a big squeeze, and it actually gave me a real sense of what it really means to play. 'He's been trying, he's 26 now, so it just goes to show how special it is what our game brings. He's a great fella, he's a middle forward and done a bit of time down at the Storm.

NRL 2025: Broncos lose Corey Jensen, Jesse Arthars for Bulldogs clash
The Broncos have been dealt a double blow with Corey Jensen and Jesse Arthars ruled out of the side's trip to Sydney to face the Bulldogs, with coach Michael Maguire backing the recalled Selwyn Cobbo to fire in his first game in a month. Jensen (calf) and Arthars (rib) will miss Friday night's clash, while veteran Ben Hunt is likely to return next week as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. It's a blow for the Broncos who were already without Origin stars Payne Haas, Pat Carrigan, Reece Walsh and Gehamat Shibasaki for next week's decider, but Maguire is confident his forward pack can get the job done. Ben Talty will make his debut off the bench after starting the year playing with North Sydney in the NSW Cup, while journeyman Delouise Hoeter will start his first game since 2023. Ben Talty will make his Broncos debut just weeks after he made the move to Brisbane. Picture: NRL Photos 'Ben Talty has come in here about a month ago and put his head down, and he's going to be on the bench,' Maguire said. 'He reminded me about how special rugby league is. I was able to sit with him yesterday and talk about how he is going to debut. 'The big fella had a few tears and gave me a big squeeze. It gave me a real sense of what it really means to play NRL. 'He has been trying for a long time, so it just goes to show how special it is what our game brings. 'For 'Della' (Hoeter), he has been out for 12 months, so it's another great story.' Maguire backed Shibasaki to handle the pressure on his Origin debut, with the backline changes opening the door for Cobbo to return to the Broncos side for the first time since round 13. Selwyn Cobbo is back in the Broncos side just a week after he signed with the Dolphins. Picture: NRL photos Cobbo was dropped to reserve grade and has subsequently signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins after the Broncos were unable to offer him enough money to entice him to stay. Maguire didn't want to comment on Cobbo's looming departure and backed him to take his opportunity at fullback. 'I'm not going to go into that. I stood here at the same thing last week talking about the same story. Selwyn is now focused on playing,' he said. 'We talk about players and how it's hard to keep everyone. That's what we're working through. 'Selly is working through this year and we've got a great opportunity with where we are at the moment. The competition is well and truly alive. 'Selly has been good over the past month. 'As much as you talk about turbulent, we've worked through things and Selly is really focused on playing with his teammates. 'He's in good form at the moment and trained really well just then, so he's ready to go.'
