Welsh games development companies receive funding boost
It aims to help Welsh developers take their games projects from pilot stage to self-sustaining models, allowing for growth in scope, reach, and impact.
The companies that will benefit from the initiative are Cloth Cat, COPA Gaming, Goldborough Studios, Rocket Science, Sugar Creative, and Wales Interactive.
The announcement follows a successful trade mission to the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco in March, where five of the awarded companies showcased their projects and built new connections.
Osian Williams, director of COPA Gaming, said: "Being backed by the Welsh Government through this scale-up funding isn't just a headline for us, it's a true game changer.
"It gives our team the confidence and resources to move forward, grow sustainably, and to proudly create uniquely Welsh games for a global audience."
Paul Durrant, CEO at UK Games Fund, added: "The Games Scale Up Fund for Wales has been a fabulous opportunity for us to see the breadth and depth of games development talent in Wales."
Minister for Culture, Jack Sargeant, said: "Wales has an incredibly talented and ambitious video games industry that's making its mark on the global stage.
"This investment is about giving our homegrown studios the financial backing to level up their operations and reach new audiences worldwide."
He added: "The feedback they received from international publishers confirms what we already know - Wales is becoming a significant player in the global gaming landscape."
Creative Wales currently has another fund open for applications.
The Games Development Fund, closing on Thursday, June 5, offers between £10,000 to £50,000 to Wales-based businesses developing video and immersive games projects for commercial release.

Chepstow School has 'paused' some sixth form courses
'Low take-up' from students has been blamed for the decision not to run a number of key stage five courses, for sixth formers aged 16 to 18, at Chepstow School which also has a 'significant deficit'. Councillor Laura Wright, Mommouthshire County Council's recently appointed cabinet member for education, said funding for post 16 education is affected by the number of statutory school age pupils, aged 11 to 16, enrolled at the school and post 16 options available nearby in Wales and England. Cllr Wright said the school's headteacher had shared with parents and students 'as early as possible' it had to 'pause' a number of courses. The Labour councillor added: 'The school is in a significant financial deficit at the moment and it means unfortunately it is not economical to run those courses with very low numbers and every course has a detrimental impact on the whole school budget. 'But on a more positive note the school is going to retain the skills to teach the courses as pupil numbers increase and it is the intention of the school to restore the courses as soon as possible.' Conservative Rachel Buckler, who asked for a statement on the 'breadth of subjects' at key stage five at Chepstow said she was concerned A-level geography is among those no longer available. The Devauden councillor said it had been included in the school's prospectus and students were only told after putting their subject choices forward. Cllr Buckler said she thought geography would be a 'common choice' for pupils as it is cited by Russel Group universities as a 'facilitating subject'. She asked Cllr Wright 'what message are we sending about our commitment to academic breadth and ambition' and said young people will now be considering leaving Monmouthshire including for schools and colleges in England. Cllr Wright said decisions on which subjects are provided are for headteachers and governors but she would raise the issues Cllr Buckler had highlighted at a pre-planned meeting with Chepstow's head and would pass any information back to Cllr Buckler. Monmouthshire also supports an e-sgol online learning partnership between its four secondary schools to offer courses in computer science, Welsh second language and Spanish which have traditionally only had a small number of students at each school studying them.

Rhyller Thriller 3: What to expect from 2025 film festival

You can find tickets here: Ahead of next month's event, Chad Jones, who was 'born and bred in Rhyl' and founded Rhyller Thriller, has spoken about his love of horror and cinema, and of his hometown. (Image: Submitted) 'My earliest memories of horror are watching films with my mum—she was the one who introduced me to the genre that would end up shaping my life. 'Despite Rhyl having a rich cinematic history - Arthur Cheetham, one of the UK's earliest filmmakers, was based here - there weren't many opportunities to learn about or get involved in filmmaking locally. 'I always wanted to become a filmmaker, but with few paths available, I ended up working in my dad's tattoo studio, which I now run. 'Things started to change in 2019 when I discovered Wicked Wales, a group bringing film screenings to Rhyl. 'I began volunteering with them and was eventually given the chance to run my own horror nights - Frightening Fridays. They went down really well. 'I shared my dream of becoming a director with Andy and Rhiannon from Wicked Wales, and to my surprise, they said: 'Well, write something - let's make a film!' 'So, I wrote Mari Lwyd, and it was an incredible experience. After that, I pitched the idea of a horror film festival in Rhyl. 'Rhiannon simply said: 'Why not make it two days?' - and just like that, Rhyller Thriller was born.' 'I had no idea how to get films or guests, so I just followed my gut - ADHD often takes the lead there! 'I reached out to Simon Bamford (Butterball from Hellraiser), and to my shock, he said yes. 'He was our first ever guest and remains one of the nicest, most generous people I've ever met. 'I also invited Dominic Brunt, best known as Paddy from Emmerdale, but to me, a brilliant horror director. 'He not only came along but screened his latest film Wolf Manor and did a Q&A hosted by my good friend (and Rhyller Thriller crew member) Jason Jones. 'That first year, we screened Hellraiser, the Welsh-language horror Gwledd with writer Roger Williams, Tales of the Creeping Death with John Williams, The House of Horace with Edward Evers-Swindell, and The Hounds of Darkness with Peter Mckeirnon. 'We had a small upstairs market, guest panels, signings, and Q&As throughout the weekend. The response was amazing - we brought people and attention to the town I love.' 'After a much-needed week of sleep, I started planning Rhyller Thriller 2. By then, I'd left Wicked Wales and set the festival up as its own not-for-profit project. 'I knew I couldn't do it alone, so Tom Rowlands officially joined the team, and along with Jason, we kept the momentum going. We secured the rights to Dog Soldiers and The Descent and also welcomed Craig Conway (star of both) and Janine Pipe, author of a book on Dog Soldiers. All three joined us for a Q&A. 'Due to funding limitations, year two was a one-day event - but we sold out. 'We expanded the market downstairs and welcomed over 300 people through the doors. We also screened The Pocketbook of Superstitions, Artifacts of Fear, and a brilliant lineup of shorts. 'We introduced the 'Bloody Seagull Award' for Best Short Film, which went to Wilderness. Once again, the event was well received—and once again, we needed another week of sleep!' We're back to two full days of horror. 'Day two is dedicated to the Godfather of Gore, Lucio Fulci, one of my all-time favourite directors. 'Although Fulci passed away in 1996, we're honoured to welcome two incredible guests from his legacy: legendary screenwriter Dardano Sacchetti, who penned many of Fulci's classics, and Cinzia Monreale, star of The Beyond. 'Together, we'll be hosting a Q&A after screening Fulci's Gates of Hell Trilogy. But that's not all. 'We're also joined by Welsh director Julian Richards, who made Darklands—often called the Welsh Wicker Man - and actor Laurence R. Harvey, star of The Human Centipede 2, who appears in the new Amicus production In the Grip of Terror, which we're thrilled to be screening. 'We're also showing The Beast of Riverside Hollow with our friend, director John Williams, the anime horror classic Akira, and a wild Estonian horror musical called The Chainsaws Were Singing. 'Our short film showcase, Little Drops of Horror, will feature 20+ short films from around the world. 'The market returns with 11 amazing horror vendors bringing their best merch to our beloved seaside town.' 'I'm just a small-town lad with a big love for film, trying to inspire others to chase their dreams and to support the place they come from. 'At Rhyller Thriller, our motto is: building community, one scream at a time. Because to us, it's not just about the films. It's about people, about mental health, about connection.
