Despite Rao's intense screen presence and the buzz around his role departure from typical characters, Maalik could not match the strong opening of his previous hit Bhool Chuk Maaf.
Maalik, starring Rajkummar Rao, opened in cinemas on July 11, but its first-day box office performance fell short of expectations. The gritty gangster drama earned Rs 3.48 crore on Day 1, according to data from trade tracking portal Sacnilk. Despite Rao's intense screen presence and the buzz around his role departure from typical characters, Maalik could not match the strong opening of his previous hit Bhool Chuk Maaf, which collected Rs 7 crore on its first day.
The opening collection of Maalik also trailed behind The Diplomat, John Abraham's recent political thriller that raked in Rs 4 crore on its first day. However, the film still fared better than Vikrant Massey and Shanaya Kapoor's Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, which opened with a disappointing Rs 32 lakh.
Directed by Pulkit, Maalik features Rajkummar Rao in the titular role and marks another addition to the actor's diverse filmography. The film also stars Bengali cinema legend Prosenjit Chatterjee, former Miss World Manushi Chhillar, and Saurabh Sachdeva. Supporting roles are played by Saurabh Shukla, Anshumaan Pushkar, Swanand Kirkire, Rajendra Gupta, and Baljinder Kaur. Despite a powerful cast, the film has received mixed reviews.
The News18 review states, 'Directed by Pulkit and produced by Kumar Taurani and Jay Shewakramani, Maalik tried hard to be a gritty gangster epic. But it looks like there's only a half-hearted attempt made at telling the audience how Rajkummar Rao's character turned into Maalik… The film quickly turned out to be a snooze fest 10 minutes into it as the makers used unnecessary fillers to complete the 2.5-hour movie."
Written by Jyotsana Nath and Pulkit, the film was also criticised for weak dialogues and a confusing plot. While Rao's performance has earned some appreciation, the film's lack of gripping storytelling seems to have affected its box office appeal.

Box Office: Superman scores a decent opening weekend in India; James Gunn directorial collects Rs 24 crore

The James Gunn-directed Superman has scored decent results in its opening weekend in India, as the David Corenswet starrer has collected Rs 24.50 crore (GBOC: Rs 30 crore) in 3 days. The superhero saga opened at Rs 6.75 crore on Friday, followed by a jump to Rs 9.00 crore on Saturday, and a nominal dip to Rs 8.75 crore on Sunday. The film has done its best business in the urban centres, but unfortunately, the mass belts didn't come on board over the weekend. The national chains have contributed about 60 percent to the total business, and ideally, a superhero film on a cult character like Superman should have had this ratio around the 55 percent mark. Superman has appreciation, but it's nowhere close to the global reception in India, as the weekend trend, especially on Sunday, was not as promising. The David Corenswet starrer will be hoping for a good hold in collections on Monday, and then look to show strong trend in the second weekend, to reach a successful number in the long run. The business of Superman is also impacted due to the cluttered release window, with competition from across industries. The biggest competitor for Superman came in the form of Jurassic World: Rebirth in India, as the dinosaur saga hit it out of the park with excellent jumps on Saturday and Sunday. Superman will be looking at first week business in the vicinity of Rs 35 crore, and then aim to get close to the half century mark by the end of second weekend. Superman Day Wise Box Office Collections in India (NBOC) Friday: Rs 6.75 crore Saturday: Rs 9.00 crore Sunday: Rs 8.75 crore Total: 24.50 crore

'Maalik' Box Office Collection Day 3: Rajkummar Rao's film earns THIS much on Sunday, shows solid weekend growth

Rajkummar Rao's latest gangster action thriller 'Maalik' continued its steady run at the box office on its third day, showing a consistent performance over the weekend. According to early estimates, the film earned approximately the same as Saturday's total on Sunday, rounding off its first weekend on a solid note. After collecting an estimated ₹ 3.75 crore on Friday, 'Maalik' saw a healthy jump on Saturday, bringing in around ₹ 5.25 crore. The film maintained its momentum into Sunday with early trends suggesting another ₹ 5.25 crore in collections. This brings the film's total to an estimated ₹ 14.25 crore over its opening weekend. Occupancy rates across major cities showed a fairly balanced response, with evening and night shows performing the strongest. On Sunday, 'Maalik' recorded an average Hindi (2D) occupancy of 29.79% during evening shows and 22.81% at night. Morning and afternoon slots were slower, at 8.05% and 22.43% respectively. Regionally, the film fared best in Chennai, with a notable 43% occupancy, followed by strong numbers in Lucknow (30.25%), Jaipur (24.25%), and NCR (23.25%). Other metros like Mumbai, Pune, and Bengaluru recorded more modest figures ranging from 18% to 22%. While the film faced lukewarm response in cities like Bhopal and Hyderabad, its consistent turnout in North and West Indian markets gave it the push it needed. Maalik has benefited from positive word-of-mouth and Rajkummar Rao's committed performance, as well as the film's themes. Starring Rajkummar Rao in the lead role, alongside Manushi Chhillar and legendary Bengali actor Prosenjit Chatterjee, the film is a gripping tale of power, ambition, and revenge set in the heart of Allahabad. Directed by Pulkit and produced by Kumar Taurani and Jay Shewakramani, 'Maalik' is packed with suspense, emotional moments, and unexpected twists. It is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025. As it enters the weekdays, it will be crucial to see whether it can hold its ground amid upcoming competition.

Saurabh Sachdeva reveals he nearly turned down Animal, credits Sandeep Reddy Vanga's convincing pitch: 'He showed me the Triptii Dimri scene with Ranbir Kapoor...'

Saurabh Sachdeva almost declined his role in Animal. Sandeep Reddy Vanga convinced him to stay. Vanga showed him key scenes to ease his doubts. Sachdeva trusted Vanga's vision despite initial confusion. The film became a career highlight for Sachdeva. He looks forward to Animal Park. He was last seen in Maalik with Rajkummar Rao. Saurabh Sachdeva may have delivered one of the most compelling performances in Animal, but not many know he nearly walked away from the project. In a candid conversation with DNA India, the actor opened up about his initial doubts, how director Sandeep Reddy Vanga convinced him to stay, and how the film ultimately became a game-changer in his career. In an exclusive with DNA India, Saurabh shared that Animal marked a turning point in his career, significantly boosting his visibility. He recalled first hearing about the role at the Bambai Meri Jaan success party, when filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar mentioned that Sandeep Reddy Vanga was looking for him. Though initially intrigued, Saurabh admitted he forgot about it until a few days later when T-Series reached out for a script narration. After attending the meeting and hearing the script, Saurabh felt uncertain about the character and the film's overall tone. He even considered turning it down, citing confusion about the world the story belonged to—whether it was grounded in gritty realism like his previous projects Sacred Games, Haddi, or Bambai Meri Jaan. Encouraged by his manager, he requested a second narration with Vanga to better understand the role before making a final decision. To ease the actor's doubts about Animal, Sandeep Reddy Vanga took a more visual approach. After listening to Saurabh's concerns, the director brought him to the edit room and showed him select sequences from the film. The first was the intense interval gunfight scene featuring masked men, which initially left Saurabh feeling unsure. But it was the second scene—featuring Triptii Dimri and Ranbir Kapoor in a subtle, emotionally charged moment—that changed his mind. The combination of raw action and emotional depth convinced Saurabh to come on board. He further admitted that even during the shoot, he remained unsure about his character's journey in Animal. Despite the confusion, he chose to place his trust in Sandeep Reddy Vanga's vision. His very first scene was the film's climactic runway sequence—a chaotic bloodbath where he had no dialogue or clear action to anchor himself, only reactions to deliver. Yet, he went with the flow. When the film released, it exploded in popularity, and his character received immense love. Looking back, Saurabh credits Vanga for the breakthrough, acknowledging that Animal gave his career a fresh push, all thanks to the director's clarity and conviction. Animal Park is undoubtedly one of the most-anticipated sequels in recent times. When asked for an update, Saurabh Sachdeva shared that while there's no fixed timeline yet, he's hopeful the project will move forward once Ranbir Kapoor wraps up Ramayana and Sandeep Reddy Vanga completes Spirit. He added that he's genuinely excited about returning for the sequel. On the work front, Saurabh was last seen in Maalik alongside Rajkummar Rao.
