Over 180 companies of paramilitary forces deployed for Amarnath Yatra in Jammu

Indian Express27-06-2025
The 38-day-long yatra is scheduled to start on July 3 from the twin routes — the traditional 48-kilometre Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the shorter but steeper 14-kilometre Baltal route in the Ganderbal district — leading to the 3,880-metre-high holy cave shrine of Amarnath. The first batch of pilgrims will leave for Kashmir from the Jammu-based Bhagwati Nagar base camp a day before the start of the yatra.
'The administration is ready and committed to ensuring a successful yatra this year. Jammu and Kashmir Police has made multi-tier security arrangements for the yatra,' Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, Bhim Sen Tuti told reporters here.
Tuti, who along with divisional commissioner, Jammu, Ramesh Kumar chaired a high-level meeting to review arrangements, including security, for the yatra, said, 'Just like we have been providing security in previous years, this year, even better arrangements are being made, whether in terms of the number of paramilitary forces, deployment in sensitive areas, or CCTV surveillance. Compared to earlier, more vigilant and multi-layered security is being ensured.' Replying to a question about the deployment of forces for the yatra in the region, he said, 'Apart from Jammu and Kashmir Police, more than 180 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed for the yatra.' He said that security forces have been deployed along the Jammu Kashmir National Highway from Lakhanpur to Banihal. 'From road opening parties to CCTV cameras, everything has been set up, and security has also been provided at langars, lodging centres. There was no ROP (road opening party) arrangement from Lakhanpur to Jammu last year, but this year there will be ROP here as well,' he said.
The IGP added that starting from July 2, the traffic police will issue a daily advisory. 'Cut-off timings will be fixed at all points related to yatra movement. All pilgrims who wish to participate in the yatra must follow this advisory so that there are no problems or inconveniences,' he said.
He said all pilgrims are advised to join the main convoy that departs between 4:00 and 4:30 am. 'Traveling individually will not be appropriate. Those travelling with the official convoy are provided with a secure environment, and it is safer to travel in an organised and protected setup,' he said.

Faecal coliform at Gaurikund, gateway to Kedar, way above safe limit: RTI

Dehradun: The faecal coliform (FC) level at a drain in Gaurikund, starting point of the Kedarnath trek, was found to be 4.9 million MPN/100ml, far exceeding the Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) permissible limit of 2,500 MPN/100ml. The data was disclosed by CPCB in response to an RTI filed by a Noida-based activist. Experts attributed the pollution to lack of a sewage treatment plant (STP) and a rise in pilgrim numbers in recent years. Over 14 lakh pilgrims have already visited Kedarnath this season, shows govt data. Vishal Singh, executive director of Centre for Ecology Development and Research called for capping visitor numbers to limit organic waste in the region. CPCB said there are two drains each in Kedarnath Dham and Gaurikund with two untapped drains flowing into the Mandakini and Saraswati rivers. "At the drain at the entrance of the pedestrian yatra, near the Gaurikund police post, the BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) was recorded at 184 mg/l (the limit for drinking water is less than 5, and for treated wastewater, up to 30), COD (chemical oxygen demand) at 362 mg/l (permissible limit: 250), and FC at 4.9 million (desirable limit: 500, permissible: 2,500)," stated the RTI reply in response to queries posed by Amit Gupta. "Pollution level at Gaurikund is dangerously high, suggesting heavy sewage inflow, untreated waste, and health-threatening pathogens. This kind of contamination not only harms river ecosystems downstream but also threatens spring sources, which supply potable water, support agriculture, and sustain tourism. Poor sewage management, coupled with warming in the high Himalayas, will affect biodiversity and increase disease risks by creating breeding grounds for vectors like mosquitoes," said Singh. He also stressed the need to prioritise sewage treatment infrastructure in such ecologically sensitive areas. "Strict regulations for solid and liquid waste management must be enforced, and water quality monitoring strengthened. Behavioural change is also key and awareness drives should be launched across the Char Dham route. Eco-sensitive pilgrim infrastructure is essential to protect these fragile high-altitude ecosystems and ensure clean water for communities," he said. The STP in Kedarnath, which was scheduled for completion before the 2025 yatra season, remains unfinished. Officials had earlier said it would be ready by May 30. In an affidavit to National Green Tribunal (NGT) in April, Rudraprayag district magistrate Saurabh Gaharwar said the original deadline was Dec 2024, later revised to Dec 14, 2025, for full system connectivity. Currently, all untreated sewage continues to be discharged into the Mandakini river due to the absence of a functional STP. NGT had pulled up both the Rudraprayag administration and the Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board (UKPCB) for failing to act on environmental violations. The DM's affidavit had claimed that 85% of STP construction was complete. Even if completed by year-end, environmentalists have raised concerns over the plant's limited capacity of 600 KLD (kilolitres per day). A petitioner pointed out that the design considered a permanent population of 5,000 and a floating population of 20,000 – a number regularly exceeded during the yatra. Following the RTI revelations, UKPCB has asked the public works department (PWD) to explore increasing the proposed STP capacity. "Construction is being carried out under the Kedarnath Dham masterplan…However, many toilets outside the masterplan boundary are also being used by pilgrims. The nodal department needs to address these as well," wrote Vinay Jhinkwan, executive engineer, PWD, in a letter to the officer at special duty (OSD) of the Kedarnath Charitable Trust.

Indian passport rises in 2025 index. Now, visit 59 visa-free countries

India has recorded its highest-ever jump in the Henley Passport Index, climbing eight places to rank 77th in the 2025 third quarter edition. Indian passport holders now have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 59 destinations, according to the data released last week. The index, compiled using data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA), ranks passports by the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. India's latest ranking places it ahead of several neighbouring countries, even as it remains well behind top performers such as Singapore, which holds the number one spot with access to 193 destinations. More access, fewer queues A stronger passport can reduce the need for time-consuming paperwork, particularly for business travellers, students, and frequent fliers. For Indian passport holders, visa-free or visa-on-arrival access means they can enter 59 countries without going through an embassy or paying hefty visa fees upfront. 'It saves both time and money, especially for those travelling on short notice,' said a Mumbai-based travel consultant. 'Travellers avoid agent commissions, documentation hassles, and sometimes long waiting times.' Some of the advantages include: — Fewer embassy appointments and documentation — Lower costs related to visa fees and courier charges — Easier last-minute travel bookings — More spontaneous international layovers and longer stopovers — Better chances at future visa approvals due to improved travel history Visa-free destinations for Indian citizens Indian passport holders can currently travel without a visa to 29 countries, across Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Caribbean. These include: Africa: Angola, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Senegal Asia: Bhutan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Macao, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand Oceania: Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Micronesia, Niue, Vanuatu Caribbean: Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, British Virgin Islands Thailand offers 30-day visa-free entry for Indian passport holders as part of its temporary waiver policy. What is visa-free travel? Visa-free travel allows passport holders to enter a country without applying for a visa in advance. Immigration officials check passports upon arrival and stamp them if required. This process removes the need for lengthy paperwork, consular visits, and sometimes interview appointments. This ease of entry benefits both travellers and host nations. For instance: — Tourism sectors benefit from higher occupancy and demand for services — Local job creation in hospitality and travel-related industries increases — More international events and conferences can be hosted with minimal red tape Countries offering visa-on-arrival to Indian travellers In addition to visa-free travel, Indian citizens can obtain a visa on arrival in several countries. These include: Africa: Burundi, Cape Verde Islands, Comoro Islands, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Seychelles Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Jordan, Laos, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Qatar, Sri Lanka Oceania: Marshall Islands, Palau Islands, Samoa, Timor-Leste, Tuvalu South America: Bolivia Caribbean: St. Lucia Seychelles requires a pre-arrival Travel Authorisation rather than a traditional visa. These visas are generally granted at the airport or border and require proof of onward travel, confirmed accommodation, and sufficient funds. Entry duration, fees, and conditions vary by country. India leads global mobility gains India's eight-place rise is the steepest climb recorded by any country in the past six months. Its jump from 85th to 77th position came despite the addition of just two more visa-free destinations. Dr Christian H Kaelin, who developed the passport index concept, said in a press release, this reflects active diplomatic negotiation. 'Nations that proactively negotiate visa waivers and nurture reciprocal agreements continue to rise, while the opposite applies to those that are less engaged in such efforts,' he said. Who's falling behind? The UK and US have both slipped in the rankings since January. The UK is now sixth, with access to 186 destinations, while the US is tenth with 182. This marks the first time the US risks dropping out of the Top 10 altogether. Venezuela has recorded the steepest fall over the past decade, down 15 places to 45th. Other downward movers include the US (down 8), Vanuatu (-6), the UK (-5), and Canada (-4). UAE and China fuel passport power shift The UAE has seen the most dramatic rise, up 34 places over the past ten years to enter the Top 10 at number eight. China has also climbed 34 places since 2015, now ranking 60th. While it does not yet have visa-free access to the EU's Schengen Area, China has expanded visa-free entry to over 75 countries — up from fewer than 20 just five years ago. New visa-free access in 2025 includes Gulf countries such as Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Saudi Arabia, and Latin American nations including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay. Asia-Pacific drives global air travel demand China's growing openness aligns with an overall rise in outbound travel from the region. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), global air travel demand grew 5.8 per cent in the first five months of 2025. 'Asia-Pacific airlines led the way with 9.5 per cent growth,' said IATA's Director General Willie Walsh. 'In North America, international traffic grew by 1.8 per cent, but domestic travel shrank slightly, making the market flat overall. Forward bookings for summer are strong, showing that confidence is holding up despite global uncertainties.' India's improved passport ranking comes as international travel surges, especially across Asia and the Middle East — and with it, opportunities for Indian citizens are expanding beyond traditional destinations.
