‘People are worried': AI boss reveals what is really going to happen to everyone's jobs

Aussie couple Samuel and Hannah Priestley's AI business is on track to make seven figures but they both swear it isn't coming at the cost of anyone's jobs.
The couple felt compelled to make the assurance as there's been growing concern about how the introduction of AI (artificial intelligence) will impact people's jobs in Australia.
Analysis from Australian policy organisation the Social Policy Group (SPG) found if Australia maintains its current pace of AI adoption, one third of the workforce could experience a period of unemployment by 2030.
Mr Priestley said when he tells people at parties he runs an AI business, the most common response is concern that jobs will be lost in the technology revolution, but he swears that isn't the case at all.
'It isn't about cutting jobs it is about making businesses sustainable,' he told news.com.au.

Mr Priestley is used to being ahead of the curve.
The 34-year-old started with a background in engineering and was working as a firefighter when he pivoted and opened an events business, where people can hire shirtless firefighters as entertainment.
He says he has always had a knack for identifying gaps in the market, and his AI business, Click Road, was born out of his experience adapting AI into his own business.
He doesn't think Aussies should feel too threatened by AI because the tools that are available should help people do their jobs better, not make them unnecessary.
Mr Priestley said in his events business he uses AI to streamline his work, and the tool helps prevents him from having to send the same email '20 times a day'.
He uses the technology to answer simple inquiries and provide customers with answers and quotes immediately.
'Our business was on a bigger scale than some of our competitors, and some had eight (admin staff), whereas we had like two,' he said.
'On the outside, people are like 'whoa that could have been six people's jobs', but no one has the money to spend on these kinds of services, and wages are going up.'
He said the introduction of that technology hasn't led to any job cuts because he wasn't prepared to hire anyone to do such basic work in the first place.
'The thing with me is that I didn't have money to pay staff to do that so stuff. So I was just doing that as an owner-operator, and it was just me doing an extra four hours of work a day,' he said.
Mr Priestley said once he saw how much AI helped his own business, he realised other small and medium-sized businesses could benefit from consulting services to learn how to use AI and overcome their fears around the technology.
Now he consults with small businesses and helps them bring in basic automated processes for things like tracking parcels and answering general inquiries.
'It isn't about taking jobs. The businesses we work with can't afford six staff, they're not employing staff anyway,' he argued.
'It is more the workload is too big and people are doing massive days.'
Mr Priestley said he understands 'people are worried' about threats to their jobs, but that isn't what he sees developments in AI leading to.
'We've worked with hundreds of businesses now. It is just about making people's lives easier and more manageable,' he said.
Giving an example of how he would work with a building company, Mr Priestley said he might collaborate with them to develop an automatic reply system for general inquiries, so the company could focus on building houses rather than replying to emails.
The AI expert said he doesn't come into businesses and help them 'sack everyone' but the tools he adds to the workplace help people become more productive.
'People are just heaps more productive now. You're not going to lose your job if you're more productive,' he said.
Mr Priestley said the demand for his AI business has already outpaced his events space because, at the end of the day, paying for shirtless firefighters isn't an essential.
'We've just hit the sweet spot,' he said.
'What we sort of found is everyone's heard of AI and there's no business that can't benefit from it. Events are fun, but it is discretionary spending.'

The new face of Sydney's terraces and townhouses has been revealed as the state government opens up its design book for would-be home builders for just $1. The NSW Labor government's New Housing Pattern Book will launch on Wednesday morning with eight terrace, townhouse, and manor house designs. Aimed at families, couples, and downsizers, the designs have been endorsed by the Government Architect following a 2024 design competition. For the first six months, the designs will be available for $1 each before rising to $1000, much less than the typical $20,000 price-tag for an architecturally-designed home. Picture: Supplied Premier Chris Minns said the government's Pattern Book was intended to give home buyers 'more choice, faster approvals, and affordable, high-quality homes. 'Whether you're a young person trying to get in, a family needing more space, or a downsizers looking to stay close to the community you know,' he said. 'This is a practical step to make the housing system fairer – and make sure NSW remains a place where the next generation can afford to live and thrive.' Planning Minister Paul Scully said the government was accelerating the designs, which he described as being 'simple and cost-effective'. 'The NSW Housing Pattern Book takes the guesswork and the delay out of home-building,' he said. The designs contained in the book are intended to be adaptable. Design: Sam Crawford. 'These designs are high-quality, easy to build, and for the first six months, they'll cost $1. 'These designs offer choice, with less complexity, making it easier to build homes in NSW.' Housing remains the single biggest cost of living pressure in NSW, with the Productivity Commission finding Sydney was losing twice as many young people as it gained. The designs contained in the book are intended to be adaptable to different family sizes and housing needs, including different room formations and layouts. Each design will also be accompanied by a complimentary Landscape Pattern to help new homeowners design their own garden that 'suits the climate'. A new approval pathway will also be implemented to fast-track building of the design-book homes, which will be subject to an advertising campaign. Bunnings CEO Michael Howard said the design book would provide much needed to support to the construction sector in NSW and boost supply. 'Bunnings is ready to help builders, developers and homeowners bring these architect-designed homes to life,' Mr Howard said. The design book comes as the Minns' government continues to face pressure over housing following the failure of the Rosehill Racecourse sale. The project would have seen 25,000 new homes and a Metro station erected on the site, but was shot down by members of the Australian Turf Club. Mr Minns is yet to formally unveil the state government's 'Plan B' following the failed sale, with a focus on new housing developments located close to the CBD. As part of the state budget, the government announced it would go guarantor for developers which follows the NSW Low and Mid-Rise Housing.

A mock cannabis store has opened in Fitzroy as part of a campaign to legalise and regulate the drug. The pop-up shop in Brunswick St will show how cannabis could be sold in a controlled environment. The Penington Institute is behind the initiative as it launches a blueprint to show Australian states how they can regulate non-medicinal cannabis use for adults. Penington chief executive John Ryan said the shop and policy launch was not about promoting cannabis use. 'It's about taking back control,'' he said. 'Regulation means strict oversight, clear controls on access and use and penalties for trafficking. 'It means resources for police to focus on serious crime.'' Canada and more than 24 American states have already embraced legalised sale of cannabis, Mr Ryan said. 'It's all about harm minimisation.'' The look of the Fitzroy shop is deliberately low key and meant to reflect the utilitarian style of many shops in the US. It will be open for a week and no drugs will be sold. The Penington plan includes controls for adult use only, a ban on advertising, plain packaging, potency limits and no public consumption. Under the proposals, the state governments would become a licensing agent for legal cannabis stores. Mr Ryan said a majority of Australians in all demographics supported legalised and regulated cannabis use. And a YouGov survey conducted last month for the institute found that 57 per cent of Victorians supported law changes to allow adults to buy cannabis legally – similar to alcohol – but with more safety and regulatory controls.

China's Premier Li Qiang calls for more economic ties with Australia in meeting with Anthony Albanese

China's Premier Li Qiang has urged Australia to fight back against protectionism during meetings with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Australian business leaders in Beijing, suggesting the two countries should draw closer together in the face of global economic uncertainty. It comes as the prime minister prepares to make a trip to the Great Wall of China on Wednesday, following in the footsteps of former Australian prime ministers Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser. Mr Albanese and Mr Li sat down for an annual leaders meeting on Tuesday evening, as well as hosting a roundtable meeting with a high-powered group of Chinese and Australian business leaders. In a thinly veiled swipe at the Trump administration's chaotic "liberation day" tariffs and its push to up-end trading ties with key partners, China's second-most-senior leader emphasised the importance of maintaining open markets and predictability. He also suggested Australia and China should respond together in the face of "growing instability and uncertainty in the global economy." "The development of all countries is faced with new challenges [and] given such circumstances, China and Australia as important trade partners, should strengthen dialogue and cooperation," he said. "The significance of us doing so is becoming more notable." In a joint statement issued after the meeting, the two countries also said they had agreed to "continue to grow the bilateral relationship, enhance exchanges and cooperation in areas of shared interest, uphold their respective national interests, and navigate their differences wisely". The meeting came after Mr Albanese met with China's President Xi Jinping, who used more veiled language to refer to the Trump administration, saying Australia and China should commit to "equal treatment" and cooperation "no matter how the international landscape may evolve." The prime minister and premier also oversaw the signing of six agreements designed to encourage economic cooperation and business ties across a host of different areas including tourism, agriculture and renewable energy. But the premier's language in the meetings with Mr Albanese and business leaders left little question that China had picked up on Australia's growing anxiety about the Trump administration's assault on the international trading system. Mr Li's comments also illustrate how China is trying to present itself as a champion of free trade and exploit resentments with the Trump administration's aggressive approach. "We hope that you will embrace openness and cooperation, no matter how the world changes," the premier told the gathered business chiefs. Earlier, Mr Albanese told reporters that Mr Xi did not directly raise his election promise to effectively force a Chinese company to give up the Port of Darwin — a commitment that has been forcefully criticised in the Chinese media. Mr Li did not directly refer to the Port of Darwin in his public remarks but said he "trusted" that Australia would "treat Chinese enterprises fairly and also properly resolve the issues of market access". The prime minister has now wrapped up his high-level meetings in China and will travel to the Great Wall of China near Beijing on Wednesday, just as Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser did in the 1970s. Mr Albanese is likely to emphasise Labor's role in restoring Australia's ties with the People's Republic of China under Mr Whitlam. After that, the prime minister will fly to the teeming city of Chengdu in the mountainous central province of Sichuan for the final leg of his China trip.
