One key observation from Commanders' OTAs: Improvement in the secondary

USA Todaya day ago

With the conclusion of OTAs and minicamps, the Washington Commanders are on a break until July 22, when training camp begins. We often don't get to see much of the OTA practices because they are closed, but some media members are in attendance and can keep us abreast of what is happening. Recently, The Athletic wrote one key observation for every team, and the Commanders should be excited.
The Commanders' cornerback room has a chance to be much improved. At this time last year, Benjamin St-Juste, Emmanuel Forbes Jr. and Michael Davis were the top outside options. All are justifiably gone, but their woes led to shifting rookie Mike Sainristil from the slot to the boundary and making a trade deadline deal for an injured Marshon Lattimore, who proceeded to struggle in the playoffs. Injuries have haunted Lattimore, but he arrived healthy for minicamp following needed rest. If available weekly, the four-time Pro Bowler and second-round rookie Trey Amos have potential as a viable tag-team against the NFC East's star receivers. Ex-Patriot Jonathan Jones brings quality experience to the mix along with Sainristil, who may shift back to his natural inside role after impressing in his first season. — Ben Standig
The Commanders' defense as a whole wasn't great in 2024, but the secondary was a major problem. Adam Peters recognized that and made moves to right the situation. Trading for Lattimore in the middle of the season may not have done what they hoped at the time, but he is a capable veteran. The time off to rest and heal did him some good, and he will be ready to hit the field this fall.
If Jonathan Jones or Trey Amos can fill in opposite Lattimore, then Joe Whitt will be able to move Mike Sainristil back to the slot where he excels the most. As good as he was on the outside last year, an uncomfortable position for him, imagine what his capabilities will be when he's confident in what he is doing.
Commanders fans should feel relieved at hearing this, and even more excited for what the 2025 season is going to bring. With a new regime and correct adjustments being made, this season is going to be just as exciting as 2024.

Yankees' offense completely disappears in ugly shutout loss to A's

Instead, Schmidt — who hadn't allowed a run in his previous three starts — gave up four and the Yankees offense went missing again, as they were thumped, 7-0, by the lowly A's in The Bronx. After picking up a win on Friday with just four hits, the Yankees were completely shut down Saturday against an ex-Yankee — JP Sears — and the A's bullpen. And the defeat displayed several worrying trends for the Yankees, who remain in first place in the AL East, but often haven't looked like a first-place team. 5 Clarke Schmidt reacts after allowing a homer to Nick Kurtz in the Yankees' loss to the A's on June 28, 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Aaron Judge continued his cold streak, and the rest of the lineup hasn't been able to pick him up. He left a pair of runners on in the third, although he nearly sent one out in the sixth. Then he ran into an out at third base to end the game. Giancarlo Stanton hasn't homered since his season debut nearly two weeks ago, while Paul Goldschmidt, Anthony Volpe, DJ LeMahieu and — especially — Austin Wells are in serious slumps. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS When that happens, mistakes like the one Wells made on Max Muncy's bunt in the eighth and a botched relay to third from Cody Bellinger to Jazz Chisholm Jr. later in the inning become more magnified. 5 Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees reacts after he flies out in the third inning. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST On Saturday, the Yankees did just about everything wrong. In Schmidt's first start since he pitched seven innings of no-hit ball before being pulled after 103 pitches, the right-hander was solid until the sixth. Schmidt saw his scoreless streak end at 26 innings when Brent Rooker took him deep with one out in the fourth. And he gave up a three-run shot to Nick Kurtz with one out in the sixth, as Schmidt allowed more than three runs- as well as more than one homer- for the first time since April 21. The Yankee offense threatened against Sears for the first — and only — time in the bottom of the third. 5 Cody Bellinger and the Yankees couldn't get anything going on Saturday. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST LeMahieu opened with a walk before Sears retired Jasson Domínguez and Goldschmidt. Volpe followed with the second walk of the inning to bring up Judge. After a visit from pitching coach Scott Emerson, Sears fell behind Judge 3-1 before Judge flied out to the warning track in right to keep the game scoreless. Rooker homered off Schmidt in the next inning, which proved to be enough for Sears and the pen. He began the season with an ERA of 2.80 over his first eight starts, but followed that with an 8.75 ERA in his next eight and had allowed eight earned runs in 8 ⅓ innings in his previous two starts heading into Saturday. But he kept the Yankees off balance, with Bellinger's opposite-field single in the first hit their only hit until Goldschmidt led off the bottom of the sixth with a base hit. 5 Jasson Domínguez strikes out in the fifth inning of the Yankees' loss to the A's on Saturday. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST The A's took control of the game in the sixth after Schmidt walked the first two batters of the inning — his first walks of the afternoon. He recovered to fan Rooker on three pitches, but Kurtz homered into the right field seats to put the Yankees in a 4-0 hole. After Goldschmidt's single to start the sixth, Sears got Bellinger to fly to left and Judge sent a fly ball to the warning track in center for the second out. 5 Nick Kurtz of the Athletics is greeted by his teammates after he scores on his three-run homer in the sixth inning on Saturday afternoon. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST In the eighth, with Allan Winans in the game, the A's had runners on first and second with no one out when Muncy popped up a bunt in front of Wells, who let it drop and then fired late and wild to first base and no outs were recorded. Austin Wynns' two-run single gave the A's more insurance, as they won for just the second time in seven games.

NFL Analyst Puts Jayden Daniels In Exclusive Group With Patrick Mahomes

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Last season, Jayden Daniels emerged as one of the biggest storylines in football following an impressive rookie campaign with the Washington Commanders. As he gears up for year two, one analyst already feels he belongs in an exclusive group that features some of the top names across all sports. As the future of the franchise, the Commanders wasted no time giving the former No. 2 picks the reins under center. This decision paid off well for them, as he quickly adapted to the pro game. With his combination of speed and throwing ability, Daniels was able to pick apart opposing defenses in a variety of ways. By the end of the regular season, he'd notched 3,500 passing yards and 25 touchdowns while helping Washington punch their ticket to the postseason. Daniels' impressive stretch didn't end there, as he was able to showcase his talents under the bright lights of the postseason as well. He led the Commanders to multiple upsets before finally being sent home by the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship game. One person who feels they've seen more than enough from him is FS1's Colin Cowherd. During a recent installment of his daily talk show, he stated that the Commanders QB is one of the few un-tradeable athletes in pro sports. Among the others to get named in this group include Patrick Mahomes, Caitlin Clark, Nikola Jokic, and Shohei Ohtani. "You're gonna think this is crazy. I think it's Jayden Daniels," Cowherd said. "I think he's our next superstar in the NFL. I thought last year was the greatest rookie season by far... There is an argument over the next 20 years they're going to become Kansas City in the NFC. That kid was bizarrely good as a rookie." "I think he's our next superstar in the NFL." Armed with an upgraded supporting cast and year of experience, many expect him to keep the Commanders in a position to contend in the NFC. As one of the top young talents at his position now, he is a player that will have a lot of eyes on him heading into the 2025 campaign. For him, the top priority is remaining on his upward trajectory and avoiding a sophomore slump. For more Washington Commanders and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Eagles fans won't appreciate a former Cowboy's prediction about the top QB in the NFC East

Some may not want to admit this, but while watching the Washington Commanders march through the most recent NFL season, something became obvious relatively early. The Philadelphia Eagles' rivals are on their way. They may not have elevated themselves to equal footing with the Birds yet, but there's a chance they'll cause a few issues. Seeing the Commanders catapult themselves into the NFC Championship Game offered a rude awakening. Washington's rise might be nearer than previously expected. Still, while most saw the postgame handshake between Jalen Hurts and Jayden Daniels as a congratulatory gesture, one of ESPN's finest thinks he saw a passing of the torch. Welcome to Marcus Spears' wild NFC East theory It wouldn't be sports talk without prognostication. It wouldn't be ESPN without controversy. Recently, the NFL Live crew found itself engaged in a conversation about the NFC East's quarterbacks. Advertisement The names are familiar: Jalen Hurts, Dak Prescott, Jayden Daniels, and Russell Wilson. Former Cowboys star Marcus Spears shared an unexpected expectation about one of them. He expects Daniels to be the best offensive signal-caller in the division soon. Well, at least he didn't cast his vote for Dak Prescott, but something else is afoot here. Where does this refusal to give Jalen Hurts the proper respect come from? He wasn't mentioned at all in Spears' theory, but if we're talking about making plays 'off-script', few do so better than Hurts. Here's another nugget, or several. While every starting quarterback in the NFC East is interesting, albeit for different reasons, two have appeared in two Super Bowls. One of those two has been so unimpressive and inconsistent for so long that few can recall when he was still effective. Advertisement You all can argue among yourselves about which guy we're discussing, but here's a hint. It's Russell Wilson. Spears and everyone else who loves Daniels aren't wrong about his potential. It's just seemingly off-base to promote him to the first chair in a division where one of the game's best reigns supreme. Daniels was phenomenal in his first year, but now he has to repeat that success. Let's see how he does in year two at the helm, and once we rule out the possibility of a sophomore jinx, then we can reassess.
