Commanders Named 'Perfect' Landing Spot For Steelers Standout
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. As training camp nears, the Washington Commanders are one of many teams dealing with a key player holding out for a new contract. While they attempt to rectify their own situation, they've been tossed out as a possible landing spot for another disgruntled high-level talent. Coming off a season where he notched 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns, Terry McLaurin is in search of a new deal with the Commanders. He is currently in the final year of his contract and is seeking some form of long-term commitment from Washington. Though the franchise has been confident they'll work things out with the star receiver, recent updates suggest both sides are still far apart in discussions. Photo byAcross the NFL, another team going through a similar situation is the Pittsburgh Steelers. As they attempt to contend in 2025, they are at odds with star linebacker T.J. Watt. He too is currently set to become a free agent at the end of this season. In a recent column for Fox Sports, David Helman tossed out potential landing spots for players currently holding out for new deals. While discussing Watt, the Commanders were viewed as a team that should pursue him if he's made available. "If Washington were to trade Terry McLaurin, they'd be opening some financial wiggle room to add another lucrative player," Helman wrote. "They could get at least two, if not three, years of play out of Watt before they have to worry about extending Jayden Daniels. They definitely need the pass rush help. Watt would give Dan Quinn a blue chip player, which he doesn't really have right now, on his Commanders' defense. Adding him to a pass rush that currently includes Frankie Luvu, Dorance Armstrong, Deatrich Wise and Clelin Ferrell would upgrade the Washington pass rush from 'so-so' to outright dangerous." Adding a talent of his caliber would drastically raise Washington's ceiling as they attempt to contend in the NFC. Landing Watt could also help bolster the Commander's run defense, something they're trying to improve in 2025. Seeing that he is still a high-impact player in the league, it's unlikely the Steelers move on from Watt this year. That said, it's still a situation worth monitoring for a team like Washington. Commanders held dinner for D.C. Council on Monday night
Wine 'em, dine 'em. Get their votes. ('Em.) On Monday night, Commanders leadership held a dinner for the members of the D.C. Council to discuss the stadium deal on which the Council eventually vote. Via WUSA9, roughly six members of D.C. Council attended the dinner at Milano's, an 'upscale' spot in Georgetown. (There was a quaint time in American history when activities like this would include a discussion as to whether any ethics rules had or hadn't been violated.) The team needs seven to say 'yes.' Currently, they have four. Per the report, a small group of protestors gathered outside, with signs urging the Commanders to pay for their own stadium. The Commanders want to move things along, so that the stadium will be ready to go in 2030. D.C. Council has been proceeding on its own timeline. 'Frankly, a big reason I'm here is to reiterate that we need some time to do this,' Ward 3 Council member Matthew Frumin said. 'We're in the middle of the budget process, there's a ton going on.' Public hearings are set for July 29 and July 30. Then, D.C. Council will be in recess until the middle of September. D.C. Council chair Phil Mendelson will not commit to a prompt vote when the group returns to work. The deal between the team and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has a timeline premised on approval by D.C. Council by July 15. Barring an unexpected development, that won't be happening. The current pressure point for getting the deal done quickly is to position D.C. to host matches during the 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup. For the team, the sooner they get their new stadium, the sooner they get out of the dilapidated building in which they now play.

Malik Nabers says he can't trash-talk Commanders because Jayden Daniels is his 'best friend'
Giants rookie Malik Nabers tells Kevin Durant he won't diss Commanders QB Jayden Daniels - Getty images In the NFL, trash talk is part of the job, especially when you land in the NFC East. But for Giants rookie Malik Nabers, that part might be a little complicated. Why? Because the quarterback leading one of their biggest rivals, the Washington Commanders, just so happens to be his best friend. Yep, that's what Nabers admitted while sitting next to Kevin Durant during a recent FanDuel panel and the moment was hilarious. Malik Nabers had a wholesome moment with Kevin Durant when asked about his NFC East rivals During a FanDuel event in New York City just days ago, NBA superstar and lifelong Commanders fan Kevin Durant asked Nabers if he was ready to bring the trash talk against his new division rivals. But Nabers wasn't biting. Kevin Durant & Malik Nabers Talk Sports Betting & Fan Pressure With FanDuel CEO Christian Genetski Instead, he responded with: 'Man, it's hard to talk trash … you got my best friend at quarterback.' That 'best friend' is none other than Jayden Daniels, Washington's new QB1 and Nabers' former LSU teammate. The two were college football's most electric QB-WR duo last season and were both selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The LSU bond between Nabers and Daniels is bigger than any NFL rivalry Malik Nabers and Jayden Daniels didn't just put up numbers at LSU, they built a brotherhood. In 2023, they torched defenses week after week, with Daniels taking home the Heisman Trophy and Nabers becoming the top wide receiver in the country. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like local network access control Esseps Learn More Undo Their chemistry was obvious on the field, but it clearly extended beyond the sidelines. Now, with Nabers catching passes for the New York Giants and Daniels leading the Washington Commanders, they've found themselves in the same division but on opposite sides of the rivalry. Still, no amount of geographic tension seems enough to break that LSU bond. Even with rival jerseys on, their friendship takes priority for now It's not often you hear a rookie wide receiver hold back on talking smack in one of the NFL's most heated divisions. But that's what makes this moment so memorable. It's a rare blend of honesty, loyalty, and good-natured humor, something fans don't always get in the pressure-cooker world of pro football. Nabers didn't say he won't compete. He didn't say he'll take it easy on Washington. But what he made clear is that Daniels isn't just another opponent. He's family. Malik Nabers may wear blue and Daniels may wear burgundy, but the LSU brotherhood runs deep. As the NFC East gears up for another fierce season, we already know one matchup will have a little more heart behind it. And if Nabers ever does throw shade at the Commanders, just know, it's probably not about the guy under center. Commanders get defensive help in ESPN's 2026 NFL mock draft
It's July, which means NFL training camps open for all 32 teams this month. It's also nearing time for college football teams to open fall camp in preparation for the upcoming 2025 season. So, before training camp kicks off, ESPN's Matt Miller revealed a pre-training camp 2026 mock draft. Miller has the Washington Commanders picking 26th in his mock draft, using ESPN's Football Power Index, which projects thousands of games using simulations for the 2025 season. FPI has the Cleveland Browns picking No. 1 overall. Advertisement Miller has Washington selecting Penn State cornerback A.J. Harris at No. 26. The Commanders traded for Marshon Lattimore last season and picked Trey Amos in Round 2 of the 2025 draft but still have a need at corner, especially when considering Lattimore's age and injury history. At 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, Harris has the length Dan Quinn loves in his corners. Harris has shown ball-hawking skills and loves to press and jam receivers. He's still a bit green, having started only one season, but last season's tape -- along with Penn State's track record in developing defenders -- makes Harris one of the most promising corners in the country. It's way too early to project the Commanders selecting a first-round cornerback. Currently, edge rusher remains Washington's most significant need. At cornerback, the Commanders have Lattimore under contract for two more seasons and just drafted Trey Amos with a 2025 second-round pick. Mike Sainristil, Washington's 2024 second-round pick, has one starting spot locked down. Much of this depends on Lattimore. If Lattimore remains healthy and resembles his former Pro Bowl self, Washington is set at cornerback. Sure, the Commanders will continue adding depth, whether in later rounds of the draft or free agency, but they'd likely use their first-round pick on another position. However, general manager Adam Peters is a BPA (best player available) guy. If a cornerback is the top-rated player on Washington's board, he'd be the pick, barring a trade down. Harris began his career at Georgia, appearing in seven games during the 2023 season before transferring to Penn State last year. Harris quickly became a starter for the Nittany Lions and earned third-team All-Big Ten honors. At 6-foot-1, 193 pounds, Harris has good size and length. He was the No. 1 cornerback recruit in the country in the 2023 recruiting class. This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: Commanders select Penn State cornerback in 2026 NFL mock draft

Commanders Wideout Spotted With Viral Trainer Amid Online Criticism
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. During the offseason, the Washington Commanders made a noticeable upgrade to their offense by trading for Deebo Samuel. As he prepares for this next chapter of his career, the veteran wideout seems eager to prove his critics wrong. Since his Pro Bowl selection in 2021, Samuel was a key component in the San Francisco 49ers' offense. Following a 2024 campaign where his production saw a slight dip, the 29-year-old now finds himself on an up-and-coming Commanders team. When Washington first pulled off this trade, many were excited about what he could bring to the offense led by rising star Jayden Daniels. However, his early days with the team have been met with some criticism. Based on his recent actions, Samuel seems eager to change the narrative around him. During minicamp, a clip went viral online of Samuel jogging while running a route. This led to endless chatter about him being out of shape and not ready to provide a lift to the Commanders. The outside noise got even louder when a longtime member of the Philadelphia Eagles took a shot at Samuel. He is hard at work ahead of training camp to start building up positive momentum heading into the 2025 campaign. Over the weekend, footage surfaced online of Samuel getting work in with viral trainer James "The Route God" Everett. #Commanders WR Deebo Samuel working with NFL Trainer James Everett Jr (The Route God) who has worked with multiple NFL players like Xavier Legette and James Cook 👀 (via:@RouteGod) — brandon (@JayDanielsMVP) June 30, 2025 Also read: Raiders Cited as Possible Landing Spot For Commanders Star Amid Holdout Fresh off reaching the NFC Championship game, the Commanders are a team eager to climb the ranks in the NFL. If they're going to remain in the hunt, they'll need a locked-in and motivated Samuel. Alongside Terry McLaurin (assuming his holdout ends), he has a chance to form one of the league's top receiver duos. Seeing that Samuel is hard at work fine-tuning his skills, he looks ready to have an immediate impact on Washington. All the online criticism could have a reverse effect and only push the veteran WR more to have a strong bounce-back campaign with the Commanders.
