Netflix quietly adds 8 episodes of wild thriller – and fans are devouring it

Metro4 days ago
An 'outrageous' new thriller has quietly been added to Netflix, with fans branding it the 'most insane show' of the year.
The Hunting Wives premiered on the platform today, and is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by May Cobb.
The eight-part series follows Brittany Snow as Sophie, a woman who moves from Boston to East Texas with her family, where she grows a little too close to a mysterious socialite and her group of wealthy friends.
However, things take a turn when a dead body is discovered and the newcomer is warned that she has 'no idea what these people are capable of'.
Malin Åkerman, Dermot Mulroney, Chrissy Metz and Katie Lowes also make up the star-studded cast.

Despite only being out a matter of hours, fans and critics have flocked to social media to rave about the latest addition to Netflix's slate.
Journalist David Opie tweeted: '#TheHuntingWives is the rare kind of trash that knows exactly what it is and revels in it.
'It's hard to make a show seem this shallow, but still be so entertaining (complimentary). Brittany Snow is great, but Malin Akerman is perfection and their chemistry is GAY gay. I love it.'
Lee commented: 'The Hunting Wives is kind of a mess with questionable writing but Brittany Snow and Malin Akerman are constantly serving.'
'#TheHuntingWives is the most insane show I have watched all year,' Reporter Max Gao praised.
'I devoured all eight episodes last week and genuinely felt bereft by the end of the season. This show is a soapy good time – outrageous characters, wild plot twists, and *so many* intimate scenes.'
Over on Reddit, user Yammersss cheered: '2 episodes in, it's super trashy fun. Malin Akerman's character is a riot, and Brittany Snow is a nice girl who's about to break bad.'
The official synopsis reads: 'Sophie trades city life for East Texas and falls into a wealthy socialite's magnetic orbit – where a clique of housewives hide deadly secrets.'
Author May, who served as executive producer on the adaptation, recently shed light on the series in a new interview, insisting there is more to it than the 'rich people behaving badly' trope we've been inundated with.
'It really is like escapist fun, but it's also grounded with a small-town murder mystery, which gives it some more gravity,' she told Marshall News Messenger. 'So, it's not just like rich people behaving badly.
'There's some other serious elements brought in. I think that makes it a very gripping and riveting show to watch. There's a cliffhanger at every turn. There's secrets, lies, betrayal. It's got it all.' More Trending
Sharing how close the show stayed to her book, she added: 'It is very similar. The book is a good blueprint for what the creators of the show went and did.
'I feel like they took the spirit of the book, and they really made it into this very juicy, binge-worthy, eight-episode series that's just beyond my wildest dreams, to be perfectly honest.
'Even though there's differences, I applaud all the differences, and I'm so excited about it because it all still just really does feel like it celebrates the book and that spirit of rowdy Texas women behaving badly in the pine forest.'
The Hunting Wives is available to stream on Netflix now.

Keeley Hawes is a perimenopausal James Bond in The Assassin

The Assassin (Netflix) is Mamma Mia! with a sniper rifle, and it's a treat. Keeley Hawes is in the Meryl Streep role, wearing dungarees on a picturesque Greek island. Her son comes to visit, wanting to know the truth about his father. But they don't get very far into that conversation, because she's a retired hit-woman and things are about to get very bloody. How bloody? Well, the credits include a 'blood specialist'. But there's nothing too grim here. It's a tongue-in-cheek action caper. The tone is reminiscent of Black Doves, the Netflix hit starring Keira Knightley as a gun-toting spy, although a key aspect of Black Doves was the unlikeliness of Knightley as an assassin; by contrast, middle-aged women everywhere will quickly buy into the idea of Hawes capably dispatching victims in between taking her HRT tablets and getting exasperated with her lily-livered son. 'Is that why you only eat mushrooms now? Are you in Extinction Rebellion?' she snorts, when Edward (former child star Freddie Highmore) expresses concern for the environment. Her character, Julie, is referred to in the script as a 'perimenopausal James Bond'. At one point, she murders somebody with a cheese fork. While Julie is forced to flee the island and go on the run with Edward and a handsome village shopkeeper (Gerald Kyd), there are various subplots going on. Billionaire's children Kayla and Ezra (Shalom Brune-Franklin and Devon Terrell) are holidaying on the family super-yacht off the Greek coast and get drawn into the action. In a Libyan prison, a terrified IT specialist (David Dencik) is wondering how he's going to survive in a cell full of homicidal heavies. The series is written by brothers Harry and Jack Williams, who can do serious (Baptiste, The Missing) and silly (The Widow, in which Kate Beckinsale battled through the Congolese jungle for several weeks while her vest remained Persil-white). They also made The Tourist, and The Assassin has the same deadpan humour and sense of the absurd. Highmore is great as the nervy Edward, coming to terms with the bombshell news that when his mum used to tell him she was a 'headhunter', she didn't mean in recruitment. Terrell is also very funny as the dumb billionaire offspring. Summer is usually a dead time for TV, so The Assassin is very welcome. Admittedly, the pace slackens after the first two episodes and it becomes a little less satisfying as the novelty wears off. There are also a couple of logical inconsistencies: why would a professional hitman waste dozens of bullets cutting down bystanders instead of concentrating on their target? Don't think too hard about it. Just enjoy the ride. And beware an angry woman with a cheese fork.

Robert attacked in Emmerdale early ITVX release - and not by John

The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that hasn't aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX. Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) has been given a warning by someone in Emmerdale after proving that Owen Michaels (Simon Haines) did not kill Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter). Yesterday, Robert discovered that John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) had visited Owen right before he was found dead. He was incredibly suspicious, and then contacted his brother Steve to learn more about him. Steve confirmed to Robert that he was with Owen the day Nate died, which proved he didn't commit the crime. It was a huge twist for Robert, but he felt frustrated when Steve then said he had no intention of telling the police this. Steve's reluctancy to clear his brother's name was because he was attending an illegal job with Owen and didn't want the police to know. While Steve didn't want to tell them – Robert did, and wasted no time in heading to the station in this evening's episode. Unfortunately, Robert was faced with an uninterested DC Cole. He pointed out that Robert's claim isn't particularly thorough, because it comes from him and not Steve. Cole then contacted Steve, and returned to 'prove' to Robert that he was lying. Steve had told Cole that he was at a birthday party the day Nate died, and had no idea where Owen was. Robert was incredibly annoyed and had no choice but to leave. More Trending A while later, Robert was at The Hide by himself. He was enjoying a drink, but that was very quickly thrown to the floor by Steve, who had arrived a very angry man indeed. Steve grabbed Robert and told him to back off, because he doesn't like it when the police dig into his business. It was a clear message, and Robert agreed to leave him alone.
