Expat job approvals within 20 days via new integrated platform
Human resources minister Steven Sim said 100 companies submitted applications and one company received approval within a week of the launch of Xpats Gateway. (TalentCorp pic) KUALA LUMPUR : A new integrated platform will reduce the time it takes to approve employment pass applications for expatriates from months previously to just 20 working days, says human resources minister Steven Sim. Sim said Xpats Gateway now integrates the processes involving the labour department's Integrated Foreign Workers Management System (ePPAx), MYFutureJobs, and the immigration department's expatriate services division. 'The fully integrated system now consolidates the previously fragmented processes under the labour department, the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso), and the immigration department's expatriate services division into a single end-to-end platform. 'Previously, employers had to submit documents across the three different portals and agencies, with the approval process taking four to six months,' he said at a media briefing today. Sim said employers will no longer have to upload documents and fill in forms on three different platforms, and that the platform was expected to reduce their administrative costs by up to 70%. He said that in the first week since the platform's launch, 100 companies had submitted employment applications through the system. 'One of them received the approval in seven days, well within the new 20-day benchmark. That is a lot of time and manpower saved. What used to be a 180-day wait has now been cut to a shorter period,' he said. Sim commended Talent Corporation Malaysia Bhd (TalentCorp) for leading the platform's development and integration, saying the platform was made in-house. 'TalentCorp's delivery of this platform internally reflects the strength of talent within our public sector, while ensuring sensitive data remains secure and governed within Malaysia,' he said. Immigration director-general Zakaria Shaaban voiced support for the integrated platform, saying it would shorten processing time while ensuring transparent documentation in approving expat job passes. 'This collaboration between the home ministry (through the immigration department) and the human resources ministry is an example of a whole-of-government approach to strengthen investor confidence, uphold national security, and deliver more trustworthy and transparent public services,' he said.

National Integrated Immigration System to begin operating in October
The autogate system at KLIA will also incorporate AI for facial recognition, in order to address issues of integrity more effectively. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : The immigration department is set to begin using the National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) in October, a move aimed at enhancing border security through artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Immigration director-general Zakaria Shaaban said the entry control system would be used to screen visitors and tourists prior to their departure from their country of origin to Malaysia. 'Currently, we have separate systems that do not allow access to data from other agencies such as the police, but now, we will integrate all the data for more effective output before making any decisions. 'Through this system, tourists and visitors will be screened in their country of origin before departure. If they are found to be ineligible to enter (Malaysia), the airline will automatically prevent them from boarding,' he said as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara last night. He said the application of NIISe was one of the department's initiatives to utilise AI technology, to enhance the efficiency and integrity of its service delivery. 'Through NIISe, we will also introduce a chatbot, allowing the public to ask questions directly through the system without needing to make phone calls or visit counters,' he said. Zakaria said the autogate system using QR code technology at KLIA would also incorporate AI for facial recognition, in order to address issues of integrity more effectively. 'This technology helps us reduce human involvement in decision-making. That is why we are moving towards the full use of autogates at our entry points,' he said. Zakaria said the department would also step up enforcement efforts against illegal immigrants this year to maintain public confidence in it. He said as of this year, 49,000 illegal immigrants had been detained for various immigration offences, while action had been taken against 1,064 employers for harbouring illegal immigrants in residential premises, rumah kongsi or shared residences and construction sites.

China's Q2 growth seen boosted by strong exports despite trade war fears
BEIJING, July 15 — China will post today the second quarter growth figures, with analysts expecting strong exports to have buoyed the world's second largest economy despite trade war pressures. China's leadership is fighting a multi-front battle to sustain growth, a challenge made more difficult by the US president's tariff campaign. US President Donald Trump has imposed levies on China and most other major trading partners since returning to office in January, threatening Beijing's exports just as it becomes more reliant on them to stimulate economic activity. Washington and Beijing have sought to de-escalate their trade spat after reaching a framework for a deal at talks in London last month, but observers warn of lingering uncertainty. Trump on Monday upped the ante, warning Russia's trading partners that he will impose 'very severe' tariffs reaching 100 per cent if Moscow fails to end its war on Ukraine within 50 days. Western nations have repeatedly urged China—a key commercial ally of Russia—to wield its influence and get Vladimir Putin to stop his three-year-old invasion of Ukraine. Official data today y will show how China's overall economy fared during the April-June period as leaders worked to shield the country from external pressures while encouraging consumers to spend. An AFP survey of analysts forecast a 5.2 per cent expansion of gross domestic product in the second quarter compared with last year—above an official target of around five per cent set for the whole year. Fuelling optimism, data from the General Administration of Customs showed yesterday exports rising much more than expected in June, helped by the US-China trade truce. Imports also rose 1.1 per cent, higher the 0.3 per cent gain predicted and marking the first growth this year. Customs official Wang Lingjun told a news conference on Monday that Beijing hoped 'the US will continue to work together with China towards the same direction', state broadcaster CCTV reported. The tariff truce was 'hard won', Wang said. 'There is no way out through blackmail and coercion. Dialogue and cooperation are the right path,' he added. But many analysts are anticipating slower growth in the next six months of the year, with persistently sluggish domestic demand proving a key drag. Data released last week showed that consumer prices edged up in June, barely snapping a four-month deflationary dip, but factory gate prices dropped at their fastest clip in nearly two years. The producer price index, which measures the price of wholesale goods as they leave the factory, declined 3.6 per cent year-on-year last month, extending a years-long negative run. Economists argue that China needs to shift towards a growth model propelled more by domestic consumption than the traditional key drivers of infrastructure investment, manufacturing and exports. Beijing has introduced a slew of measures since last year in a bid to boost spending, including a consumer goods trade-in subsidy scheme that briefly lifted retail activity. — AFP
