Hulkenberg shows true colours after beating Lewis Hamilton to first-ever podium
Nico Hulkenberg has jokingly apologised to the Silverstone crowd after he secured his first podium finish, beating Lewis Hamilton to third place at the British Grand Prix. Hulkenberg began his F1 career back in 2010 with Williams, but had to wait until his 239th start for a first podium.
The German finished just 5.07 seconds ahead of Hamilton, who had to settle for fourth and has now surpassed his longest wait for a podium finish. Hamilton has not been in the top three since finishing second in Las Vegas 14 races ago.
And Hulkenberg light-heartedly apologised to the crowd for denying Hamilton a spot on the podium in his home race. "It feels good. It's been a long time coming, hasn't it? But I always knew we have it in us, I have it in me, somewhere," Hulkenberg said after the race.
"What a race. Coming from virtually last, doing it all over again from last weekend. It's pretty surreal, to be honest. I'm not sure how it all happened, but obviously crazy, mixed conditions.
"It was a survival fight for a lot of the race. I think we just were really on it with the right calls, the right tyres in the right moment, made no mistakes - quite incredible.
"I was in denial until probably the last pit stop, but then when I heard we gapped Lewis quite a bit with the one extra lap, I was like, 'ok, this is good, this is some breathing space.' But then he was catching quite quickly, so the pressure was there.
"It was an intense race but we didn't crack, no mistakes, and obviously really, really happy with that. I was thinking that he's going to give it all in front of his home crowd, and I was like, 'sorry guys, but it's also my day.' I had to stick my neck out. I'm super happy."
Although Hamilton missed out on a podium finish at Sliverstone, fellow Brit Lando Norris won his home Grand Prix for the first time and was absolutely delighted with the victory. "It is beautiful," Norris said after the race.
"Apart from a Championship, this is as good as it gets in terms of feelings. Incredible race, stressful as always but the support from the fans made the difference, so I have to thank them.
"The main thing is don't f*** it up, that is rule number one. It might never happen again, hope it does, but these are memories I'll have forever.
"As far as being a stressful race, it's as stressful as it gets. A round of applause for Oscar as he put in a good race, he was fast. Credit to him and of course McLaren, to win at home is pretty amazing."

Ben Sulayem says F1 could have V8 engines as soon as 2029
July 7 (Reuters) - Formula One could go back to using noisy V8 engines with fully sustainable fuel by 2029 at the earliest, according to FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The sport is entering a new engine era next season but the head of the governing body suggested last February that a return to the naturally-aspirated V8s or V10s was being considered after that. The V8 engines were last used in 2013, before the current 1.6-litre V6 units. "The current engine is so complicated, you have no idea, and it is costly," Ben Sulayem told reporters at the weekend's British Grand Prix. "R&D is reaching 200 million (dollars), and the engine is costing approximately 1.8 to 2.1, so if we go with a straight V8, let's see. "Many of the manufacturers produce V8s in their cars, so commercially it's correct. How much is it? You drop it. The target is more than 50% in everything." Ben Sulayem said the V8 engine would also have significant weight advantages and the sound would be welcomed by both nostalgic fans and the new generation. "To us, the V8 is happening. With the teams now, I'm very optimistic, happy about it. FOM (Formula One Management) are supportive, the teams are realising it is the right way," he said. "We need to do it soon... you need three years, so hopefully by 2029 we have something there, but the fuel is also very expensive, and we have to be very careful with that. Transmissions are very expensive." Ben Sulayem also spoke about the possibility of a Chinese team filling the final 12th slot, something he has mentioned before, and said he still felt the sport needed more cars rather than more races. "The time will come when we feel it is right to open an expression of interest," he said of filling the 12th slot. "We are not here to upset other teams. It won't be just go and do it for the sake of doing it. It has to be worth it for us. The team has to add value to sustaining the business of Formula One." General Motors' Cadillac brand is due to become the 11th team next season, a slot won after initial resistance from the other teams and Liberty Media-owned Formula One.

Florent Malouda praises Wrexham's superb success story
That is the view of Chelsea and France legend Florent Malouda who is enjoying watching the story unfolding at The Racecourse where Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are co-owners. Phil Parkinson's side finished runners-up in League One last season, securing an historic third successive promotion. It promises to be much tougher in the second tier next term - Wrexham last played at that level 43 years ago - but Malouda says the north Wales club can take heart from how Brentford managed to reach the top-flight where they have spent the last four campaigns and finished 10th in 2024-25. Speaking on behalf of bet365 and their launch of the free-to-play Club World Championship Tournament Predictor game, Malouda said: "It's a wonderful success story, especially when you consider people coming from Hollywood, getting involved in football, and being so successful so quickly. There is something happening there. "I hope the story continues and that they get promoted to the Premier League. MORE WREXHAM AFC NEWS Wrexham's Championship rivals Birmingham City complete sixth new signing Ben Foster and Ben Tozer set to appear at Soccer Camps on Wrexham Down Under Tour "Of course, it's more challenging now to step up from Championship to Premier League, but it has been done in the past. "Look at teams like Brentford, they got promoted and have managed to stay in the Premier League. "I hope that happens for Wrexham, they have a glamourised story around the club and I hope they make a movie one day. They'll shoot a movie based on the true story of Wrexham."

Wrexham youngsters in frame for action on Australia tour
This year's pre-season tour is taking place in Australia and New Zealand, and Reds boss Phil Parkinson has taken a 30-man squad with him on the trip. Matches will take place in Australia against Melbourne Victory on July 11 and Sydney FC on July 15, and Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand on July 19. Experienced pros such as James McClean and Ollie Rathbone will feature in the hat-trick of games against A-League opposition as history-making Wrexham, on the back of three successive promotions, continue their build-up to the new Championship campaign which kicks-off away to Southampton on Saturday August 9. Three young players - Max Purvis, Alex Moore and Callum Edwards - are yet to make their senior bow but have also been included in the travelling party and Parkinson hopes they follow the lead of Harry Ashfield who made his first-team break-through last term after getting his chance on the pre-season tour to north America 12 months ago. "We've taken 30 players on this pre-season tour," said the Reds' boss. "A few of the youngsters are coming on the trip which is fantastic for us. "Harry Ashfield came on the American trip last year and emerged on that trip and now there's three or four players coming on this trip with us. "It's going to be great to integrate those youngsters into the group." The full squad is as follows: Arthur Okonkwo; Callum Burton; Danny Ward; Max Cleworth; Aaron James; Dan Scarr; Eoghan O'Connell; Max Purvis; Lewis Brunt; Tom O'Connor; Ryan Longman; Ryan Barnett; Matty James; George Evans; George Dobson; Andy Cannon; Alex Moore; Ollie Rathbone; Elliot Lee; Harry Ashfield; James McClean, Jacob Mendy; Seb Revan; Ryan Hardie; Sam Smith; Callum Edwards; Mo Faal; Ollie Palmer; Jack Marriott; Jay Rodriguez.
