Gavin Newsom joins 'all-out war' against Texas in Democratic power grab that could tear country apart
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered the arrest of dozens of state Democrats who fled to block a Republican plan to redraw congressional districts in Donald Trump 's favor.
Fifty‑seven Democratic lawmakers skipped town, flying to Illinois and New York in a dramatic bid to halt the GOP 's effort to push through a new electoral map that could hand Republicans five additional Congressional seats in Texas - boosting Trump's chances of holding Congress in the midterms.
In a Monday night press conference, Newsom - who many believe will run for president in 2028 - said he will respond in kind should Abbott redraw his districts, joining what Texas Democrat Congresswoman Julie Johnson calls an 'all-out war.'
'The proposal that we're advancing with the legislature has a trigger only if they move forward, to dismantling the protocols that are well-established,' he said.
'Would the state of California move forward in kind? Fighting? Yes, fire with fire.'
He said that he has not yet seen the state party's re-drawing of California's districts, he set his terms for approving them.
'That process has to have the concurrence, the support of two-thirds of the legislature,' he said.

The Democrats own 30 of 40 seats in the state senate and 60 of 80 seats in the state assembly.
'The maps, we believe, should be transparent. They should be provided in a transparent way to the public, and as a consequence, those maps are being processed and will be brought to light.'
He also offered Californians themselves a chance to endorse the maps in time for the midterms.
'We will offer them the opportunity to make judgments for themselves, again, only if Texas moves forward,' Newsom said.
'I'll reinforce that we believe it should be a national model, independent national redistricting, and it would revert back to its original form, but it's done in response to the existential realities that we're now facing. Things have changed, facts have changed, so we must change.'
Newsom follows Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a potential 2028 presidential contender and outspoken Trump critic, who welcomed the fleeing Texas Democrats to Chicago on Sunday after having been in quiet talks with them for weeks.
'This is not just rigging the system in Texas,' Pritzker said Sunday. 'It's about rigging the system against the rights of all Americans for years to come.'
U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey of Texas urged other Democratic governors to join Pritzker, Newsom and New York's Kathy Hochul.
Democrats, Veasey said, have too often 'shown up to a gunfight with good intentions, no knives.' But 'that era is over,' Veasey declared Monday from Illinois. 'We are not going to unilaterally disarm.'
Newsom reiterated that he was only acting in defense of his state.
'They've triggered this response and we're not going to roll over and we're going to fight fire with fire, but we're going to do so not just punching with the weight of the fourth largest economy, the most populous state in our union, the size of 21 state populations combined,' he said.
'We also will punch above our weight in terms of the impact of what we're doing, and I think that should be absorbed by those in the Texas delegation. Whatever they are doing will be neutered here in the state of California, and they will pay that price.'
Abbott gave the Democrats until 3 p.m. Monday to return to Austin, warning they risked arrest and even losing their seats.
When none came back, Republican leaders authorized law enforcement to bring them in 'by any means necessary.'
'The sergeant‑at‑arms and any appointed officers are directed to send for all absentees whose attendance is not excused, and to secure and maintain their attendance under warrant of arrest if necessary,' House Speaker Dustin Burrows, a Republican from Lubbock announced.
By fleeing the state, Democrats broke quorum in the Texas legislature, preventing Republicans from conducting official business.

Democrats call the redistricting plan a blatant power grab and told DailyMail.com they welcome the showdown with Republicans.
'When we have the President of the United States looking for five Congressional seats, this can eventually impact the entire United States, so to say that we are doing this to grand stand is bulls***, with all due respect,' Texas Rep. Linda Garcia told DailyMail.com Monday afternoon.
Among the liberals on the lamb, two members of the House are traveling with children-- a nine and five-year-old.
Garcia decided to bring her nine-year-old son after not having great child care options and realizing she might be in Chicago until Aug. 19-- when the current special session ends.
'What I want him to understand is that sometimes we have to make very big sacrifices in order to generate change,' the Mesquite (a Dallas suburb) Democrat shared in a phone interview from Chicago.
'I walked him through worst possible scenarios that could take place, including getting arrested, getting bombarded by press...and he has been very brave.'
Abbott doubled down by ordering Texas troopers to arrest all rouge Democrats Monday afternoon.
Garcia's elementary school student has found a playmate in the five-year-old grandchild of another representative who was forced to bring the boy as well.
'This is going to be one of the greatest lessons he could learn. I would hope that in the future he would recall the courage that as a mother this requires,' she said, her voice cracking with emotion.
They have been working with lawyers who told them arrests were a likely outcome.
However, the Lone Star State Democrats believe this is a moment of inflection nationally, particularly because the congressional district that will be redrawn in Texas if the GOP gets its way would impact Black and Hispanic communities.
'You're going to steal the power and the voices of black and brown communities-- we're not just going roll over and just allow you to do that,' Rep. Lauren Ashley Simmons added.
'The message that I'm receiving from my community is that we need to stand up and hold the line.'
In fact, the Dems wouldn't share their location in Chicago with Daily Mail, explaining they knew arrests were looming early Monday.
'We know that Donald Trump is the one spear-heading all of this. We don't know what he's capable of, we are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best,' Rep. Christina Morales said via phone interview.
State Attorney General Ken Paxton, bragged he successfully secured a Texas Supreme Court ruling that held that the House could arrest absent members to secure their presence and establish a quorum when Democrats fled the state in 2021.
'If he wants to round up and arrest duly elected officials whose constiuents are watching and who put us in office, so be it,' Rep. Simmons said of Abbott.
'I hope he understands, you can only push people so far to their breaking point and then there will be a response.'

Fox News anchor Jesse Watters makes startling prediction about glam A-Lister he thinks Barron Trump will marry
Fox News anchor Jesse Watters has made a startling prediction that Barron Trump will marry MAGA's newest sweetheart, actress Sydney Sweeney. On Monday's episode of The Five, Watters discussed the ongoing controversy surrounding the glamorous actress after she was plunged into the hot seat by angry liberals who branded her American Eagle ad 'Nazi propaganda.' After highlighting how Democrats have lost 'another culture war battle,' Watters playfully said that the president's 19-year-old son will one day wed Sweeney, 27. He said: 'Every girl wants to look like her, and every guy wants to look at her. And the Democrats think, "Wait a second, why don't we call her a Nazi and boycott the company?" 'You know how this ends? She's going to marry Barron and it's going to create the greatest political dynasty in American history,' Watters said as his co-anchors laughed. Watters' comment comes after Donald Trump sensationally gushed over the Euphoria star when hearing about the backlash she's received from liberals. Sweeney faced criticism after it was revealed she's a registered Republican. 'Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the "HOTTEST" ad out there. It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are "flying off the shelves." Go get 'em Sydney!' the president said. Although the president and Watters have thrown their support behind Sweeney, some people were left uncomfortable by the anchor's comment - considering Trump's son is eight years her junior. Waters' bizarre comment came as he and his co-hosts discussed the controversy surrounding Sweeney's recent American Eagle ad (pictured) 'Gross, could you imagine,' one user wrote. 'Threw up in my mouth,' wrote another. Someone else questioned: 'What makes him think that Sydney would even be interested in Barron?' 'Cringey,' another commented. While many were not onboard with Watters' idea, others appeared to agree with his prediction. 'That would be very cool,' one said. Someone else stated: 'Could happen.' 'A perfect match,' another commented. Clothing brand American Eagle has been under fire for days after running a 'racially charged' ad featuring the White Lotus star. In the advert, the blonde-haired, blue eyed actress was seen donning denim with the tagline 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.' In the commercial, Sweeney said: 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye jeans are blue.' It almost immediately sparked a conversation about eugenics and racism online, with many people disowning not just the brand, but Sweeney as well. Sweeney is a member of the Republican Party of Florida, according to public voter records reviewed by Daily Mail. She registered in Monroe County, Florida in June 2024. Buzzfeed was the first outlet to report Sweeney's voter registration. President Trump was elated to discover Sweeney was registered as a Republican after her controversial jeans ad set off a political firestorm. Daily Mail asked Trump for his reaction to Sweeney's surprise voter registration after he landed in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and the president didn't shy away from his excitement. 'Oh, now I love her ad,' Trump responded. 'You'd be surprised at how many people are Republican. That's one I wouldn't have known, but I'm glad you told me that,' he continued. 'If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.'

Bill and Hillary Clinton dates set for House probe on Ghislaine Maxwell ties
Former President Bill Clinton and wife Hillary will testify before the House Oversight Commitee in October as the panel probes the investigations into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, the committee said on Tuesday. Rep. James Comer, the Republican chair of the Oversight committee, tweeted a list of testimony dates for upcoming witnesses compelled by supboena to appear. The Clintons are the first to sit with the committee, likely an effort to capitalize on the frenzied coverage around the investigation and the Trump administration's bungled attempts to get the president's base to stop caring about it. A number of other top federal officials including former Attorney General Merrick Garland are also set to testify as well. Bill Clinton's friendship with Epstein makes his appearance one of the few called by the committee unrelated to the official duties his office.

Jesse Watters shares bizarre Sydney Sweeney and Barron Trump fantasy: ‘Create the greatest political dynasty'
Fox News host Jesse Watters has proposed Barron Trump and Sydney Sweeney get married and form the 'greatest political dynasty." He shared his brainwave about the president's son and the actress hours after Trump weighed in, again, on Sweeney's controversial ad campaign for American Eagle. 'You know how this ends? She is going to marry Barron. And it's going to create the greatest political dynasty in American history,' Watters said during Monday's airing of The Five. His Fox News colleagues burst into laughter. The 27-year-old actress has starred in hit TV shows including White Lotus and Euphoria. Barron Trump, 19, is the president's youngest son, and attends New York University. The ad campaign — 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' — has been the target of backlash after critics took issue with its play on words, saying it evokes the language of eugenics, the racist and discredited belief that the human race can be improved through selective breeding. In the commercial, the blonde-haired, blue-eyed actress, dressed in an all-denim outfit, speaks directly into the camera. 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color,' she says. 'My jeans are blue.' Playing on the word 'genes,' a voiceover then says: 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.' American Eagle has defended the ad campaign. It 'is and always was about the jeans,' the retailer said in a statement Friday. 'We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way,' the statement continued. 'Great jeans look good on everyone.' Sweeney has yet to make a public statement on the matter. Watters also claimed Monday that those who took issue with the ad were "Democrats.. obsessed with Nazis." 'Why are Democrats so obsessed with Nazis? Everything is Nazis. When I hear someone has good genes, I think: hot parents. I don't think: Hitler,' he said. The president had started praising the ad this weekend after learning that Sweeney was a registered Republican. 'She's a registered Republican? Now I love her ad,' the president told reporters Sunday. Public voting records revealed that the White Lotus actress has been registered with the Republican Party in Florida since June 2024. She has neither endorsed nor supported Trump publicly. The following day, Trump was still opining on Truth Social, praising it as 'the 'HOTTEST' ad out there.' 'Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there,' he wrote. 'It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves.'' Trump then condemned what he believed to be 'WOKE,' including singer Taylor Swift, writing: 'Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be.' Shortly after the president wrote the social media post, American Eagle stock soared. Throughout the day, stock rose 2.54 points, or 23.65 percent. Watters also praised Trump for supporting the ad, saying he was 'in on the culture' because he watches so much television. 'Trump, who is in the culture because he watches TV all the time, seizes on this, champions on this great American clothing company and the Democrats use another culture war battle,' the host said. 'They are winless in the culture war in the last couple years. They're like the Cleveland Browns of politics.'
