'Organised By Students': Harvard Distances Itself From 'Pakistan Conference' Row After Pahalgam Attack

News1830-04-2025
Harvard University, after a backlash, clarified that the 'Pakistan Conference 2025' was independently organised by students and not endorsed by donors or the administration.
Days after organising the 'Pakistan Conference 2025' on April 27, Harvard University's South Asia Institute has distanced itself from the controversy that followed and asserted the conference was independently organised by the students and their faculty advisor.
The University faced a backlash for organising the event just five days after the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists on April 22.
In a statement, Harvard University's South Asia Institute also extended its condolences to the victims of the attack.
'The Institute supports academic research projects and works with other university partners on multiple events throughout the academic year. One such event was 'The Pakistan Conference', organised by students from Harvard and held on April 27, 2025," the statement read.
'In accordance with our principles of operation, we did not consult any benefactor of the Institute regarding this conference. The students, along with their faculty advisor, independently determined the topics and speakers presenting," it added.
'We share the grief and anguish with our friends, colleagues, and loved ones in India who have been affected by the attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, and we offer our heartfelt condolences," the University stated.
'These acts of violence were not indiscriminate— they were calculated attacks based solely on religious identity," the letter by the students stated.
'While formally denying involvement, Pakistan's ministers and lawmakers have simultaneously issued aggressive warnings to India and reaffirmed their support for insurgent activity in Kashmir. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has even issued threats of retaliation, should India take any 'kinetic step' in response," the letter read.
'Welcoming representatives of a government that not only denies accountability for but also ideologically supports such religion-based terrorism, risks Harvard being complicit in legitimising those who enable or justify these crimes," the students wrote in the letter.
'We ask for the clarity, courage, and compassion for Hindu and Indian students grieving the targeted killing of members of their faith. We request you to take a stance against Hinduphobia," it read.
'We respectfully request that Harvard University: 1. Issue a public statement condemning the Pahalgam terror attacks and affirming support for victims of religion-based violence. 2. Review the participation of Pakistani officials at the Pakistan Conference 2025 in light of their government's ideological and rhetorical support for groups like LeT. 3. Provide emotional and institutional support to affected students through the Office for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging," the letter mentioned.
'This is not about political posturing. It is about moral clarity. Harvard must ensure its campus does not become a platform for whitewashing state-enabled religious terrorism," it concluded.
STUDENTS SAY PAHALGAM ATTACK WAS 'TARGETED'
Speaking to news agency ANI recently, Surabhi Tomar said, 'The horrible attack in Pahalgam was a targeted, religion-based massacre. When Harvard invites officials, especially officials who have ideologically justified such acts, it risks legitimising the state-backed terror narratives on our campus. This is the reason why we thought that we should take some action or ask people to take some action."
Elaborating more on the event, Tomar said, 'It was a pre-planned event, and it was a coincidence. However, even given the coincidence, we do not think that it is correct for anyone, especially a university like Harvard, to legitimise such voices, especially when they in their country are trying to justify such acts and not condemning them."
She further said that the students have urged US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to 'deny visas to officials who support terror-linked ideologies."
'We shouldn't stay silent after a faith-based killing, that is our belief. We consulted our peers. We received a great deal of support from students from 65 countries. We read the testimonies of survivors, and we acted on a shared moral obligation to speak out. We emphasised that this was not random violence. It was religious persecution," she said.
'We urged Harvard to stand against Hinduphobia and asked the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to deny visas to officials who support terror-linked ideologies," Tomar added.

Another student, Rashmini Koparkar, expressed disappointment, stating that the guests at the event didn't condemn the Pahalgam attack and show sensitivity.
'We were expecting a certain degree of sensitivity and acknowledgement of what has happened. The event was pre-planned and already discussed. It was a coincidence that the event took place within five days. However, a more thoughtful gesture would have been preferable."
'First of all, they could have condemned the attacks. Secondly, the number of guests and the high-ranking officials that were arriving at this event were actually in question because this is a state which has been harbouring cross-border terrorism for years. India has been suffering," Koparkar said.
THE PAHALGAM TERROR ATTACK
On April 22, armed terrorists unleashed horror by opening fire at tourists in Kashmir's iconic Pahalgam.
The wives and other relatives of those killed in the attack later revealed to the media that the terrorists asked the names and the faith of tourists before shooting them dead.
They also reportedly asked those who said they belonged to the Muslim community to recite the Kalma.
The terrorists shot dead those who said they were Hindus, and left their relatives, especially women, asking them to narrate the ordeal to the government.

Congress reminds Jaishankar of China's ‘support' to Pakistan in Op Sindoor after his talks with Wang Yi

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, in his talks with Yi, ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers' conclave in Tanjin Tuesday, Jaishankar said that Sino-India relations have been 'gradually moving in a positive direction' since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit in Kazan in October 2024. In the statement, shared by Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh, the party also referred to Chinese restrictions on export of critical minerals such as rare-earth magnets, which has hit India's automobile sector. Jaishankar raised the issue of 'restrictive trade measures' in his meeting Monday. New Delhi: The Congress Tuesday took a swipe at External Affairs Minister for his forward-looking remarks during his meeting with Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, reminding him that China had given 'total support to Pakistan' during Operation Sindoor. 'Perhaps, we should remind the EAM of recent developments in bilateral ties since the PM's last tête-à-tête with President Xi: China gave total support to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, turning it into a testing ground for network-centric warfare and weapon systems such as the J-10C fighter and PL-15E air-to-air missile and assorted drones,' said the Congress. 'Deputy Chief of Army Staff R Singh has stated that India fought three adversaries in Sindoor, including China that gave Pakistan 'live inputs' i.e. real time intelligence on Indian military operations. Pakistan is likely to acquire Chinese J-35 stealth fighters in the near future,' the party stated. Addressing an event earlier this month, while sharing his assessment of Operation Sindoor, had said that 'Pakistan was the front face' but India also had to contend with China 'providing all possible support' to Islamabad. However, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan had later downplayed Beijing's role, saying the extent of state support was 'difficult to define'. In its statement, the Congress also highlighted the unresolved aspects of the troop buildup on the China border sparked by the clashes at Galwan Valley in June 2020. 'Indian patrols continue to require Chinese concurrence to reach their patrolling points in Depsang, Demchok, and Chumar. 'Buffer zones' in Galwan, Hot Spring, and Pangong Tso lie predominantly within the Indian claim line, preventing our troops from accessing points to which they had unrestricted access before April 2020,' said the main opposition party. During his meeting with Yi Monday, Jaishankar also pressed for de-escalation at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China. 'We have made good progress in the past nine months for the normalization of our bilateral relations. It is a result of the resolution of friction along the border and our ability to maintain peace and tranquility there. This is the fundamental basis for mutual strategic trust and for smooth development of bilateral relations. It is now incumbent on us to address other aspects related to the border, including de-escalation,' said Jaishankar. The Congress reiterated its demand for a detailed debate on China in Parliament, saying it hopes that the Centre will hold the discussion during the upcoming monsoon session of the House. 'If the Parliament could debate the border situation in November 1962 when the Chinese invasion was at its peak, why cannot we discuss now – especially given that both sides appear to want renormalisation (albeit without necessarily restoring the May 2020 status quo on the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh)?' said the Congress. Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya's family reacts as execution postponed: Husband says ‘happy, efforts will continue to…'

The family of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, who has been sentenced to death for murder in Yemen, on Tuesday said they were happy after hearing the news of her execution date being postponed. Nimisha's husband Tomy Thomas told PTI that efforts to avert her execution will continue. 'The execution has been postponed. That is good news. We are happy and relieved. I am sure efforts will continue to avert her execution and bring her back safely,' he said. He thanked everyone who worked hard to support the cause. Thomas said they have a daughter studying in class XIII, and that the child has been kept away from these developments. Nimisha's execution was scheduled for July 16 but was postponed earlier today. 'In the case of Nimisha Priya, it has been learnt that the local authorities in Yemen have postponed the execution scheduled for July 16, 2025," ANI quoted sources as saying. The 38-year-old nurse hails from Kollengode in Palakkad district. A Yemeni court pronounced her guilty of murdering her Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in July 2017. This major relief for Nimisha Priya comes after the Indian government lobbied for a resolution. Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar, the 94-year-old Sunni Muslim leader who holds the title of the Grand Mufti of India, also held talks with religious authorities in Yemen to save the Indian nurse. On July 15, a meeting was arranged between representatives of the influential Sunni Muslim leader and the family of the Yemeni national who was allegedly killed by Nimisha, PTI reported. A Yemeni court had granted Nimisha Priya a death sentence in 2020 for murdering Talal. In November 2023, the country's Supreme Judicial Council rejected her final appeal. The Supreme Court on Monday expressed sadness over the Indian government's submission that there is not much it can do to intervene and save Nimisha Priya. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta was hearing a plea seeking directions to the Indian government to save Nimisha from Yemen death row, through diplomatic channel negotiations. The counsel who appeared for Nimisha informed the court that the only remaining option to save her is through a blood money settlement, provided the family of the deceased is willing to accept it, an ANI report said. The Attorney General of India (AGI) stated that the Indian government is making every possible effort to help Nimisha. He further informed the court that talks are ongoing with Yemeni authorities, including the public prosecutor handling Nimisha's case, to secure a suspension of the execution order until negotiations can be pursued. However, the AGI also admitted that the Indian government's ability to intervene is limited, describing it as "a very complex issue," adding, "there's no way we can know what's happening (in Yemen)." "There's nothing much that we can do... It's not like any other part of the world (where possible negotiations can be carried out)", the AGI stated. (With inputs from agencies)

TMC distorted comments to portray my stand on illegal infiltration as ‘anti-Bengali': Assam CM

Kolkata: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Tuesday, accused Trinamool Congress of deliberately distorting his recent comments on the stand of the Assam government on illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators, projecting him as taking an 'anti-Bengali' stand. In a statement issued by him on Tuesday, which he posted on the wall of the official X handle, Sarma also alleged that the ruling dispensation in West Bengal had deliberately resorted to such distortion to shield Muslim infiltrators from Bangladesh. 'Assam has been waging a relentless war against illegal infiltration of Bangladeshi Muslims for several decades. The recent attempt by the @AITCofficial to distort my media remarks and portray our stand as anti-Bengali is nothing but a desperate ploy to shield Muslim infiltrators from Bangladesh, whose very presence threatens to alter the demographic fabric of our nation,' read the statement from the Assam Chief Minister. He also clarified that all Indian citizens residing in Assam, including the Bengali-speaking ones, have a clear idea of the Assam government's stand on illegal infiltration. 'Let it be made absolutely clear: in Assam, every Indian citizen—including Bengali-speaking people—fully understands our position and supports our uncompromising stand against illegal Muslim immigration from Bangladesh,' Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma added. The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari shared the statement by Biswa Sarma, on the wall of his own X handle and said that at a time when the Assam Chief Minister was leading a fearless and timely fight against illegal infiltration of Bangladeshi Muslims, the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was shamelessly banking on these illegal infiltrators and helping them to get enrolled in the voter's list in West Bengal. Adhikari also said that Trinamool Congress was deliberately encouraging this since its political survival heavily depended on these illegal infiltrators. He also said that every Indian-Bengali stood by the efforts of the Assam Chief Minister to check illegal infiltration from Bangladesh.
