Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya's family reacts as execution postponed: Husband says ‘happy, efforts will continue to…'
Nimisha's husband Tomy Thomas told PTI that efforts to avert her execution will continue. 'The execution has been postponed. That is good news. We are happy and relieved. I am sure efforts will continue to avert her execution and bring her back safely,' he said.
He thanked everyone who worked hard to support the cause.
Thomas said they have a daughter studying in class XIII, and that the child has been kept away from these developments.
Nimisha's execution was scheduled for July 16 but was postponed earlier today. 'In the case of Nimisha Priya, it has been learnt that the local authorities in Yemen have postponed the execution scheduled for July 16, 2025," ANI quoted sources as saying.
The 38-year-old nurse hails from Kollengode in Palakkad district. A Yemeni court pronounced her guilty of murdering her Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in July 2017.
This major relief for Nimisha Priya comes after the Indian government lobbied for a resolution. Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar, the 94-year-old Sunni Muslim leader who holds the title of the Grand Mufti of India, also held talks with religious authorities in Yemen to save the Indian nurse.
On July 15, a meeting was arranged between representatives of the influential Sunni Muslim leader and the family of the Yemeni national who was allegedly killed by Nimisha, PTI reported.
A Yemeni court had granted Nimisha Priya a death sentence in 2020 for murdering Talal. In November 2023, the country's Supreme Judicial Council rejected her final appeal.
The Supreme Court on Monday expressed sadness over the Indian government's submission that there is not much it can do to intervene and save Nimisha Priya.
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta was hearing a plea seeking directions to the Indian government to save Nimisha from Yemen death row, through diplomatic channel negotiations.
The counsel who appeared for Nimisha informed the court that the only remaining option to save her is through a blood money settlement, provided the family of the deceased is willing to accept it, an ANI report said.
The Attorney General of India (AGI) stated that the Indian government is making every possible effort to help Nimisha. He further informed the court that talks are ongoing with Yemeni authorities, including the public prosecutor handling Nimisha's case, to secure a suspension of the execution order until negotiations can be pursued.
However, the AGI also admitted that the Indian government's ability to intervene is limited, describing it as "a very complex issue," adding, "there's no way we can know what's happening (in Yemen)."
"There's nothing much that we can do... It's not like any other part of the world (where possible negotiations can be carried out)", the AGI stated.

HC seeks Centre, Delhi govt.'s response on traffic violations by e-commerce delivery agents
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the Centre, Delhi government and Delhi Police to respond to a plea alleging traffic violations by e-commerce delivery riders. A Bench of Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela ordered the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Delhi Transport Department and Commissioner of Delhi Police to file their replies and posted the matter for hearing on October 8. Advocate Shashank Shri Tripathi in his petition alleged 'widespread, continued and unchecked' violations of the Motor Vehicles Act and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules by delivery partners of quick commerce and e-commerce platforms in the Capital. The counsel for the Delhi government informed the court that the government had already introduced a policy for two-wheelers – the Delhi Motor Vehicle Aggregator and Delivery Service Provider Scheme, 2023 – and had notified it on November 21, 2023. The scheme aims to license and regulate aggregators operating in the Delhi region. The court then asked the Delhi government to place on record the policy and for the authorities concerned to provide detailed information about the action taken against the violators. The plea alleged that delivery workers employed or contracted by various platforms routinely use two-wheelers to transport 'oversized, bulky and excessively heavy items,' including industrial toolkits, foldable furniture, and commercial-sized delivery boxes. 'These loads often exceed the permissible dimensions and weight limits under Indian traffic regulations, compromise the stability of vehicles, obstruct the vision of riders and endanger public safety,' it said. 'The continued tolerance of these unsafe delivery practices will create a dangerous precedent that encourages other commercial entities to disregard safety regulations, thereby potentially leading to a complete breakdown of vehicular discipline and road safety standards across Delhi and other urban centers, which would result in irreparable harm to public safety and the rule of law,' the petition said. Family of murdered Yemeni national refuses pardon for Nimisha
Kochi: The family of the Yemeni national for whose murder Kerala-born expat nurse Nimisha Priya was sentenced to death has ruled out accepting any proposal for a pardon, suggesting her execution being postponed at the intervention of Indian authorities and religious leaders was at best a temporary reprieve. "Nimisha won't be pardoned; she must face execution, as ruled by Yemeni courts," online news portals in Yemen quoted murder victim Talal Abdo Mahdi's brother Abdelfattah Mahdi as saying. News of the Yemeni authorities deciding to keep the execution scheduled for Wednesday on hold till further orders came the previous day, raising hope in her native Kerala that there could yet be a breakthrough in negotiations. Abdelfattah dismissed any such possibility, including accepting blood money. "What is happening today, and all the talk of mediation and reconciliation attempts, is neither new nor surprising," he posted on his Facebook page. "Throughout the years of pursuing our case, there were covert efforts and serious attempts at mediation — and that is natural and expected. But the pressures we faced did not change us. Our demand is clear: qisas (retribution) and nothing else, no matter what."
