Congress Marks One Year Of Rahul Gandhi As LoP, But It's Priyanka Who Stole The Spotlight

As Congress celebrates Rahul Gandhi's first year as Leader of the Opposition, it is Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's quiet rise in Parliament that has drawn more attention
With the Monsoon Session of Parliament set to begin on July 21, the Congress is celebrating one year of Rahul Gandhi's tenure as Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha. Gandhi completed a year in the post on July 2, a milestone the party is using to spotlight his speeches, pointed attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP government, and his frequent press interactions.
Gandhi's elevation last year was a significant moment for the Congress—it was the first time in a decade the party had the numbers to claim the LoP post in the Lok Sabha. His appointment also coincided with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's debut as a Member of Parliament, underscoring the return of the Gandhi siblings to the centrestage in Parliament.
Interestingly, over the past year, it is Priyanka—not Rahul—who has made the stronger impression inside Parliament. Her interventions, informal outreach, and symbolic gestures have drawn considerable attention. In particular, her handbags, carried during key sessions, sparked political chatter: one, seen as a show of solidarity with Palestinians, invited criticism of appeasement; days later, another bag signalled support for Hindus and Christians targeted in Bangladesh.
She has also spoken up on Wayanad-related issues, built rapport with Congress MPs, and even met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to seek a special package for the Kerala constituency. These moves, though subtle, have often overshadowed her brother's presence.
Rahul Gandhi, meanwhile, has had a more combative but controversial tenure. His interventions have repeatedly triggered strong reactions. His remarks on the Abhaya Mudra, accusations of the BJP being anti-Hindu, and warnings about constitutional erosion under the Modi government led to a privilege notice. He took his oath holding a copy of the Samvidhan, a symbolic moment that set the tone for his tenure.
More critically, he has struggled to unify the INDIA bloc. Far from consolidating the alliance, his leadership has faced resistance, particularly from the Trinamool Congress, which has questioned his suitability for national leadership and pushed for Mamata Banerjee to lead the Opposition front instead.
The BJP, for its part, has repeatedly accused Gandhi of trivialising the LoP post, citing what it calls frivolous remarks and his choice of attire, including track pants, during serious parliamentary discussions like those on the Waqf Bill. The ruling party has labelled him a 'non-serious" LoP and suggested that his approach undermines the dignity of the role.
With four years remaining in the current Lok Sabha term, the Congress hopes Rahul Gandhi will grow into the post and assert a more effective leadership style. Within the party, there are those who believe he must now move from symbolism to substance, both to rally the INDIA bloc and to challenge the BJP electorally.
For now, as the party marks one year of his leadership, the story seems less about his transformation and more about the rise of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra—who, quietly and without fanfare, may have emerged as the Congress's most compelling parliamentary presence.

High Court rejects Hindu side's plea to declare Shahi Idgah disputed structure

In a significant development in the ongoing legal battle over the Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi and Shahi Idgah mosque in Mathura, the Allahabad High Court has dismissed a petition filed by the Hindu side seeking to declare the Shahi Masjid as a disputed petition, Application A-44, had sought to officially designate the Shahi Idgah mosque as a "disputed structure" in court records and further proceedings. Dalai Lama's succession plan: China warns India against interference after Union Minister Rijiju backs his authority

After the Dalai Lama said that only the Gaden Phodrang Trust, established by him, had the authority to identify his successor, China, in a strong statement, said it hopes India will stop using Tibet issues to interfere in domestic affairs and avoid affecting the development of ties, according to news agency Reuters. The Chinese foreign ministry's statement Friday highlights the rising geopolitical tension over the future of Tibetan leadership. This came after Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday said: 'No one has the right to interfere or decide who the successor of His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be.' He was speaking ahead of his visit to the Dalai Lama's base in Dharamshala for the religious leader's 90th birthday on Sunday. 'Only he or his institution has the authority to make that decision. His followers believe that deeply. It's important for disciples across the world that he decides his succession,' Rijiju added. To this, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters: 'We hope the Indian side will fully understand the highly sensitive nature of Tibet-related issues, recognise the anti-China separatist nature of the 14th Dalai Lama.' She further urged India to avoid interfering in China's internal affairs 'at the expense of bilateral relations.' Beijing maintain that it has the sole right to approve the Dalai Lama's successor, calling it a legacy of imperial authority. India's support for the Dalai Lama's decision marks a rare public contradiction of that claim. On Wednesday, the Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, confirmed that he would reincarnate. He also stated that his successor would be born in the 'free world.' His succession announcement has not dispelled concerns among the Tibetan exile community in Dharamshala, home to more than 20,000 Tibetans and the headquarters of the Tibetan government-in-exile. 'The absence of His Holiness would be a huge setback for the Tibetans,' said Penpa Tsering, president of the government-in-exile. 'The responsibility lies on us as to how we carry forward the legacy of His Holiness.' Tibetans see the Dalai Lama not only as a spiritual leader but also as a symbol of their struggle for cultural preservation and autonomy from Chinese rule. Traditionally, senior monks identify the next Dalai Lama through visions, signs, and spiritual consultations. The current Dalai Lama has hinted he may leave written instructions or even name a successor before his death — a step meant to prevent political interference from Beijing.
