Ten-year-old dances her way to history
KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia made ballet history when a Sabahan ballerina won silver in the ballet solo category at Dance World Cup (DWC) 2025 finals in Spain earlier this month.
Ivana Iman Mohammad Ezral became the first Malaysian to break into the top three when the 10-year-old stunned judges with her fun, fresh and graceful moves during the finals held in Burgos, Spain.
She competed against elite dancers from ballet powerhouses such as Russia, Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, China and the United Kingdom.
Her mother Dr Natassia Sarah Mohd Danny said Ivana Iman is the first Malaysian to win the second highest prize in the ballet solo category in the DWC finals.
She added that according to a judge, Ivana Iman's triumph was not just a personal win but a national milestone.
Little winner: Ivana with her father Mohammad Ezral and mother Dr Natassia Sarah.
Her silver medal and score of 89.3% was just 0.7% shy of the gold winner from England.
'To see such poise, technical excellence and storytelling at her age, from a country not historically known for classical ballet, is nothing short of extraordinary,' Dr Natassia Sarah recalled the judge as saying.
The DWC, often referred to as the Olympics of youth dance, sees over 120,000 dancers from more than 70 countries competing through rigorous qualifiers, with only the top dancers advancing to the finals.
The classical ballet solo is one of the most competitive categories, judged by former principal dancers and internationally renowned choreographers.
Ivana Iman's achievement represents a breakthrough for Malaysia in global performing arts and positions her as a rising figure in the international ballet scene, her mother said.
Prior to this, the eldest of four siblings had joined her first international competition at the Dance World Cup 2024 grand finals in Prague, the Czech Republic.
Ivana Iman finished seventh in the soloist (any style ballet) category with a score of 89.4% against competitors from 52 other countries.
Dr Natassia Sarah also paid tribute to her husband and Ivana Iman's father, Mohammad Ezral Ansari, for being the support system behind their daughter's victory.
'He is the superhero who juggles all her training and needs,' she added.
She also thanked all the sponsors, including Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and the Sabah government, Kota Kinabalu MP Datuk Chan Fong Hin and Papar MP Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali for supporting and assisting Ivana Iman's journey.
"All these sponsors greatly helped with tickets and accommodation to compete in Spain,' she said.

#SHOWBIZ: Alif Satar: Bullying destroys one's future forever
KUALA LUMPUR: Popular Malaysian singer, actor, and television host Alif Satar has expressed his shock and sorrow over the recent death of a schoolgirl, allegedly due to bullying at a boarding school. Alif, 35, emphasised that the culture of bullying among students is not something to be proud of, but rather "a heinous crime against humanity that destroys the future of the perpetrators." "I just read about a boarding schoolgirl who died a brutal death as a result of bullying," he posted on the Threads application. "I just don't know what has got into the minds of many kids now, that thugs are great and people will respect them." Recalling a past interview with a convicted bully, Alif highlighted that such actions only serve to ruin a person's future. "Believe me, there is nothing great and no one respects you when you are in prison," he said. Many online users echoed Alif's sentiments, with some suggesting that the influence of films contributes significantly to bullying among students. "All local films about school gangsters ignore the lesson at the end of the story but focus more on the violence of the fight scenes," one netizen commented. The tragic incident Alif referred to involved student Zara Qairina, who reportedly died on July 17 after falling from the third floor of a school building in Sabah, believed to be a victim of bullying.

At the same time, the 29-year-old actor also acknowledged that it's difficult to prevent people from taking photos when he's out with his partner. 'I won't stop living my life. I won't stop going out to eat if I want to – life goes on. "I act for the camera, but I can't live for the camera,' he explained.

3-Michelin-star Paris restaurant Arpege switches to plant-based dishes
For the first time in a three-star restaurant in France, Alain Passard is now serving exclusively plant-based cuisine, a sign of a still discreet but real turning point in haute gastronomy. – Photo by BERTRAND GUAY/ AFP French chef Alain Passard, known for his mastery of roasting techniques, has decided to drop almost all animal products from the menu at his three-Michelin-star restaurant, Arpege. The decision follows his earlier move to eliminate red meat from Arpege's dishes in the early 2000s. Passard's updated menu excludes meat, fish, and dairy, although honey sourced from the restaurant's own beehives will remain an exception. Passard said he was motivated by his passion for nature, adding that using seasonal vegetables would also reduce the restaurant's environmental impact. REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes Passard, 68, rose to fame for his roasted dishes, including "poulet au foin", or chicken cooked in hay, but has since become a leader in Paris's growing vegetable-based dining scene. "Everything I was able to do with the animal will remain a wonderful memory," Passard told Reuters. "Today, I'm moving more towards a cuisine of emotion, a cuisine that I could describe as artistic. It's closer to painting and sewing... Today I'm a different chef." On the menu is a "mosaic" of tomatoes, flamed aubergine with melon confit, and a dish made up of carrot, onion, shallot and cabbage. The priciest set menu costs 420 euros (US$493) and lunch costs 260 euros. Some countries have seen consumers turn away from meat in recent years. At the Paris Olympics last year, organisers set out to cut the amount of meat served to athletes and spectators. – Reuters
