From left: Sabahan Jaeda Jane Khan (Female Junior), Olivia Smith (Female Master 20-29) and Signe Waldbauer (Female Master 30-39). KOTA KINABALU (July 21): The breathtaking scenery of Pantai Dalit, Tuaran has made it a fan favourite among holidaymakers looking to enjoy the best of Sabah's tropical paradise. Yesterday, Pantai Dalit once again became the chosen playground for 592 swimmers from 39 countries, vying to qualify for the OCEANMAN World Final Championship 2025 in Dubai, UAE, from December 3rd to 7th, 2025. This year's edition of OCEANMAN Kota Kinabalu challenged swimmers of all ages and abilities to test their limits against the backdrop of the breathtaking Shangri-La Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu's coastline. The event featured a range of distances, including the Sprint 2km, 5km, 10km and 500-metre relay race, as well as the OCEANKIDS 500-metre race, catering to swimmers of all levels. Despite the choppy waves and strong wind conditions on that day, which affected the event's scheduling, the event still proceeded relatively smoothly. 'We wanted all our swimmers to swim and compete under the best sea conditions,' said OCEANMAN Event Director, Azura Zainol Abidin. 'Based on the technical review, we had to decide to change some of the flag timings,' she concluded. OCEANMAN Kota Kinabalu offered a unique and unforgettable experience of swimming in crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush tropical landscapes. 'With such strong international representation, I believe OCEANMAN will help propel Sabah's reputation as a leading sports tourism destination in Malaysia,' said Sabah Tourism Board CEO Julinus Jeffrey Jimit. 'As the host venue for 2024 to 2026, we are excited about the potential this event holds for positioning Sabah as a prime destination for sports tourism. And with the event being held in Tuaran instead of the city centre, we are also excited to be able to highlight rural tourism to all the participants,' he added. Julinus also remarked that the economic impact of events like OCEANMAN cannot be overstated. Sports tourism is a growing segment that attracts high-spending visitors who not only participate in the event but also explore the surrounding areas. By hosting this prestigious series, STB is positioning Sabah as a destination for active travellers who seek meaningful, adventure-filled experiences. The OCEANMAN World Series event is the largest open-water event in the world. OCEANMAN Kota Kinabalu 2025 is organised by Tough Gorilla Ventures with support from the Sabah Tourism Board, Tourism Malaysia and Shangri-la Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu as the co-sponsors. The top 10 swimmers in every age group, as well as the top three from the Inspiration category, will get a qualification slot for the OCEANMAN World Final in OCEANMAN, Half OCEANMAN, and Sprint distances.

Ignis 3R project to rehabilitate decades-old Sandakan landfill
Alan Tan Yean Keat, executive chairman of SG Ignis (Sabah) Sdn Bhd, receives a symbolic key from Sandakan Municipal Council president Walter Kenson, while Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam (fourth right) looks on. SANDAKAN: A decades-old landfill here that has been emitting foul odours and leaking untreated waste into rivers is finally being rehabilitated using a home-grown waste recovery system called Ignis 3R. The site, located at Mile 8 on Jalan Lintas Sibuga, covers a total of 10 acres – of which six acres have been handed over to SG Ignis (Sabah) Sdn Bhd for rehabilitation. The Sg Sibuga landfill served Sandakan residents for over 20 years before operations shifted to a new site in Kampung Melayu, Mile 8, in 2023. At the height of its use, it received up to 500 tonnes of rubbish daily. With most of the original landfill cells long filled, bulldozers were used to spread trash on the surface, creating mountains of untreated waste. Residents living just a few kilometres away in Bandar Sibuga Jaya, Taman Mawar and Bandar Utama Mile 6 often complained of an unbearable stench, especially in the evenings. Some eventually moved out of the area due to this. The site also lacked basic environmental safeguards – with no leachate or landfill gas treatment in place for years. During storms, uncovered garbage is swept into Sungai Seguntor, which flows into the sea. The release of leachate into waterways further raised concerns about its impact on health and marine life. Speaking at the site handover, Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the project marks a long-overdue turning point for waste management in Sandakan. "This landfill will be rehabilitated and turned into usable, managed land. The waste that has piled up will be converted into something that can be sold," he said. Joachim said he hoped this solution would work – especially since technologies such as waste-to-energy were found to be unsuitable for Sabah. He added that if the Sandakan project proves successful, the state government intends to replicate it in other districts, starting with Papar. The Ignis 3R system, developed by parent company Ignis Environment Initiatives Sdn Bhd, uses a globally patented rehabilitation technology to process legacy waste without burning or open dumping. Decomposed materials are converted into usable by-products like oil, carbon and alternative fuels. Its implementation is led by SG Ignis Sabah chief executive officer Dr Davina Markus, a young Sabahan entrepreneur who brought the modified system from pilot projects in Johor to be scaled up in her home state. "This is not the first time the project is being done, but it is the first time in Sabah," said Dr Davina. "The technology has been upgraded and modified — and Sabah is the first to receive this improved version. The system is called Ignis 3R, and 'Ignis' means fire in Latin." Walter Kenson, president of the Sandakan Municipal Council (SMC), acknowledged that the Sg Sibuga landfill had long exceeded its capacity and was a burden to local governance. He said the council welcomes the rehabilitation as a much-needed relief. Also present at the event were Local Government and Housing Ministry permanent secretary Datuk Dr Jamili Nais, Karamunting assemblyman Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin and nominated assemblyman Datuk Jaffari Waliam.

Sabah begins landfill rehabilitation using Ignis 3R tech
Published on: Monday, July 21, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 21, 2025 By: Mardinah Jikur, Noor Zafira Zayn Text Size: Joachim and others at the project site. SANDAKAN: A long-standing issue of 'dead landfills' in Sabah is entering a new phase as the State Government embarks on a rehabilitation project at the Sungai Sibuga landfill using Ignis 3R technology. Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who is also Local Government and Housing Minister, said the initiative reflects a broader move towards more sustainable and responsible solid waste management in the State. Advertisement He stressed that ageing landfill sites, though often out of sight, continue to affect public health, safety, and land use in growing urban areas. Joachim noted that after evaluating various technologies, Ignis 3R was found to be the most suitable for Sabah's context in terms of cost, logistics, and feasibility. He expressed confidence in the solution, calling it timely and practical, and highlighted that the project is led by a Sabahan, Ignis SG Sabah CEO Dr Davina Markus. Davina said the initiative marks a personal mission to address unmanaged waste buildup while supporting national green goals through a closed-loop, non-incineration system. The project, fully funded through a private financing initiative and supported by Exim Bank, is expected to be completed by July 2026 and aims to inspire broader environmental commitment across Sabah. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Umno leaders ignorant of MA63: Ruslan
Published on: Monday, July 21, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 21, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: Ruslan criticised those who equate Sabah with other states, saying it reflects ignorance of the formation of Malaysia. PAPAR: Umno's Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan should not belittle the 'Sabah for Sabahan' (S4S) slogan by equating Sabah to other states in Malaysia when the Malaysia Agreement clearly held that both Bornean states are partners and not states of Malaya. Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Vice President Datuk Ruslan Muharam said that S4S symbolises the aspirations of the people of Sabah who want to see the state progress and prosper under the leadership of its own people, while still valuing cooperation with the Federal Government. Advertisement 'S4S is a reflection of reality, not mere political rhetoric. It embodies the spirit of Sabahans' struggle for their rights and privileges as outlined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),' Ruslan said during the launch of the G-NIUS e-Tuition programme. He stressed that Ahmad should be more aware and respectful of Sabahans' sensitivities, and not undermine S4S, which represents the rights and dignity of the people of Sabah. Ahmad, who is also the Head of Umno's Central War Room Secretariat, recently said that the slogan 'Malaysia for Sabah' (M4S) is more inclusive than S4S. The Pontian MP argued that M4S implies that Sabahans are not only for Sabah but are part of a greater Malaysian identity shared with the other 14 states. In response, Ruslan reiterated that Sabah is not just a state but one of the three founding regions of Malaysia, alongside Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, under the MA63 agreement. Ruslan, who is also the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister of Sabah, criticised those who equate Sabah with other states, saying it reflects ignorance of the formation of Malaysia. 'Sabah is a region, not an ordinary state. Its status is unique and special, alongside Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, in forming this country as stipulated in MA63, in line with the 2022 constitutional amendment. Therefore, all parties should acknowledge this fact, and respect the history and spirit of the agreement which laid the foundation of modern-day Malaysia,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
