Newly-wed groom, would-be parents among plane crash victims from Gujarat
Bhavik, 26, was a passenger on seat number 26F on the London-bound B787 Boeing Dreamliner Air India flight carrying 242 passengers and crew members that crashed in Ahmedabad's Meghaninagar area near the city's airport Thursday afternoon, minutes after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai International Airport Ahmedabad.
The flight had only one survivor — Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, a passenger on seat 11A.
Bhavik, who lives in London, came back home to Vadodara 10 days ago for the wedding on June 10. As soon as she heard the news, Isha, 26, fainted, her family tells The Indian Express. 'Isha ki toh mehndi bhi nahi sukhi hai,' her aunt tells The Indian Express as the family waited in the basement of Institute of Kidney Disease and Research Centre (IKRDC) on the Civil hospital campus.
Loud wails ring across the auditorium as tense families wait for news. The weeping and wailing stops only when the names of passengers are called out.
Also waiting for news were Nautik Mate, 27, and his wife Shibhangi. Nautik's sister 27-year-old Pooja and 30-year-old brother-in-law Harshit were among the flight's passengers. The couple had been expecting a baby and were on their first visit back home after they moved to the United Kingdom a year ago.
'Pooja was on a study visa that got extended recently. Both met each at a job in Ahmedabad and got married around six years ago. Pooja was visiting for a medical checkup,' her friend Anand Sharma tells The Indian Express as he tries to console the family.
In one corner, Trupti Soni waits for news of her brother Swapnil, 45, his wife Yoga, 44, and another sister-in-law, Alpa. The family was on its way to London to meet her brother and Alpa's husband Nishit, who had set off on a road trip from Ahmedabad to London three months ago and was to reach his destination Friday.
The family was seated next to former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who also died in the crash.
'My brother and sisters-in-law had planned to reach London to receive Nishit. Look at God's will. Now Nishit had to cut his trip short to get here,' Trupti says.
In the auditorium, Jignesh and Janki Patel are waiting for any news of their relatives, Kokilaben Patel, 65, and Shashikantbhai Patel, 70. The couple from Anand were on their way to London to meet their son,
'My cousin called from London and informed us that his parents were onboard this flight. We knew they were flying but were not sure about their dates and flight,' Janki says.
Ranjanben Patel, 63, and Pravinbhai Patel, 64, from Kheda too were on their annual visit to London, where their son Mehul lives. 'They visit him every year but this is beyond our wildest imagination,' their relative Jigar Patel, 31, says.

PTI Air India flight bound to London was forced to abort takeoff after the aircraft faced technical issues. AI Flight AI2017 was scheduled to depart from Delhi to London on Thursday (31 July). However, it was brought to a halt after the cockpit crew decided to 'discontinue the take-off run'. The aircraft involved in the incident was a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner . Shahid Khudiram grunts under terminal Kavi Subhash's load
1 2 3 4 Kolkata: The Shahid Khudiram Metro station has unexpectedly become prominent as the new southern terminus of the North-South corridor (Blue Line), following recent developments. Despite its new status and the transfer of additional Metro staff, it is still ill-equipped for its enhanced role, according to stationed personnel. For instance, the station operates with only three security guards, with one now indisposed. The remaining two must manage multiple responsibilities, including passenger guidance, assistance with smart card machines, QR-coded ticket verification, and providing transport information. The morning shift runs from 6 am to 2.30 pm, followed by a gap till 4 pm when the next guard's shift begins, ending at midnight. During the interim period, a sweeper temporarily assumes security duties. Compared to Kavi Subhash's six booking counters, three windows are now functioning during peak hours at Shahid Khudiram, reducing to two during quieter periods. "We need more staff to handle passenger rush," a Metro employee said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gentle, Needle-Free Way to Monitor Blood Sugar—Now Being Tried by Seniors Zakdavi The station superintendent was unavailable for comment since he was at Kazi Nazrul station in Garia Bazar. The Blue Line, stretching 32 km from Kavi Subhash to Dakshineswar along the city's north-south axis, has been essential to Kolkata's transport system since its inception in Oct 1984, with subsequent expansions. The elevated Shahid Khudiram station began operations alongside Kavi Subhash terminal on Mahalaya on October 7, 2010, marking the Blue Line's final southern extension, which now serves approximately 6 lakh passengers daily. Earlier, while Kavi Subhash station recorded 22,000-25,000 daily visitors, Shahid Khudiram station saw a modest footfall of less than 10,000. Over the last three days, its footfall has increased to around 20,000 during peak hours. "People were barely aware of this station close to Dhalai Bridge in Garia. Many of my colleagues didn't even know that it has been named after freedom fighter Khudiram Bose. For riders, it was just one of the stations. It has suddenly become crucial for Metro commuters," said Sudakshina Sen, a govt schoolteacher and Sonarpur resident, who takes the Metro to travel to her workplace in Hazra.

Gujarat-bound train from Bihar's Muzaffarpur derails near Kanpur in UP
New Delhi/Kanpur, Two coaches of a Gujarat-bound train from Bihar's Muzaffarpur derailed between Kanpur and Tundla in Uttar Pradesh on Friday afternoon, Railway Ministry officials said. Gujarat-bound train from Bihar's Muzaffarpur derails near Kanpur in UP No one was seriously injured as the speed of the Muzaffarpur-Sabarmati JanSadharan Express was below 15 kmph, they said. 'Two general coaches, sixth and seventh from the engine, derailed in the loop line of Bhaupur Yard at 4.20 pm," said Shashi Kant Tripathi, Chief Public Relations Officer, North Central Railway . "The train was travelling at a low speed at the time, which averted a major tragedy," the PRO said. The officials said that the train's guard informed the Tundla control room, which further informed the area controller of Kanpur and others, after which an accident relief medical van and cranes were rushed to the spot. While no serious injuries or fatalities were reported, a few passengers sustained minor injuries and were given first aid at the scene, he added. Passengers who saw the train derail told officials that the coaches suddenly tilted, creating panic. Many passengers, including women, children, and the elderly, were assisted by fellow travellers to get out of the affected coaches. The incident, which occurred on the busy Delhi-Howrah route, caused a major disruption to train services. At least six trains, including New Delhi-Varanasi Vande Bharat Express, Anand Vihar-Ayodhya Cantt Vande Bharat Express and Katihar-Amritsar Amrapali Express, have been diverted due to the blocking of the UP line track. Restoration work has been initiated immediately, and railway officials from Kanpur have reached the site. The divisional railway manager of Prayagraj has reached the site and an accident relief train, technical teams, and a medical van were immediately dispatched to the site to begin rescue and restoration operations. The general manager of North Central Railway Zone is on the way, railway officials said. Deputy Commissioner of Police Dinesh Tripathi also reached the spot with a heavy police force to supervise the efforts and ensure crowd control. Normal train movement is expected to resume following the completion of track clearance and a thorough safety inspection, the PRO said. The Railway administration has formed a high-level committee to investigate the cause of the derailment. Efforts are currently underway to clear the blocked section of the track, and passengers have been provided with alternate travel arrangements.
