Trent Alexander-Arnold fights back tears as Real Madrid star joins tribute to his former Liverpool team-mate Diogo Jota after forward's tragic death at 28
A moment of silence was held before kick-off on Saturday night's FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final in honour of Diogo Jota.
The match took place just under 72 hours after Jota and his brother Andre Silva had died in a car crash in northern Spain.
Alexander-Arnold was a team-mate of Jota at Liverpool for five years and he was moved during the tribute.

Cole Palmer furiously kicks post and rages at Chelsea teammate in Fluminense win
Cole Palmer could not hide his fury with Nicolas Jackson during Chelsea's victory over Fluminense in the Club World Cup. The Blues secured a 2-0 win over their Brazilian opponents in New Jersey on Tuesday night with Joao Pedro scoring two superb goals on what was his full debut for the club. The victory booked their place in the final of the competition where Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain await. Pedro, who joined Chelsea for £60million from Brighton last week, came off the bench in the quarter-final victory over Palmeiras last weekend. With Liam Delap suspended, the Brazil international was preferred to Jackson who was named among the substitutes in East Rutherford. Jackson entered the fray after an hour to replace Pedro and passed up a huge opportunity to increase his side's lead. With 80 minutes on the clock, the Senegal international did well to win back possession high up the pitch before bursting into the box and shooting for goal with a first time effort he fired into the side netting. Palmer had made a run into the box and was completely unmarked 12 yards out from goal, waiting for the pass which never came. Palmer then booted the post in frustration, shouting repeatedly at Jackson who held his arm up apologetically. While Jackson has been Chelsea's sole option up top for the last two seasons, there is now huge competition up front following the arrivals of Delap and Pedro from Ipswich and Brighton respectively. The former Villarreal star has endured a difficult period for his club. He missed the end of the Premier League season as the result of a red card picked up against Newcastle in May – a ban which also rules him out of the opening game of the 2025-26 season against Crystal Palace. More Trending The 24-year-old was also needlessly sent off in the group phase of the Club World Cup against Flamengo. Assessing his performance on Tuesday night, former Wales and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale suggested Jackson's decision not to pass to Palmer showed the striker is feeling the pressure to keep up with his new teammates. 'That is sometimes what competition does, it puts pressure on you,' Bale told DAZN. 'I think if Joao doesn't score, maybe he doesn't feel that pressure and maybe he would probably play a simple pass to Cole Palmer. 'But under pressure, it changes your decision and sometimes it affects your performance. I'm sure a lot of strikers have been in that position before but I think he chose the wrong option there.' Joao Pedro double fires Chelsea into Club World Cup final
The Brazil forward, who only completed his £60million move from Brighton last week, struck in style in each half as Chelsea overcame his first professional club and sweltering conditions in New York on Tuesday. Their reward for victory is a guaranteed cash prize of around £80million and the chance to play for a jackpot exceeding £90m in Sunday's final against Real Madrid or Paris St Germain. Joao Pedro celebrated in respectful style against his first professional club (Seth Wenig/AP) Manager Enzo Maresca handed Pedro, who made his debut off the bench in the quarter-final defeat of Palmeiras, his first start in the absence of the suspended Liam Delap. It was a decision which paid very rich dividends as Chelsea battled past a Fluminense side who, captained by veteran former Blues defender Thiago Silva, had defied expectations to reach the last four. The temperature was around 34C at kick-off at MetLife Stadium and Chelsea were playing their 63rd game of a season that began last August. Yet they still made a strong start with the influential Enzo Fernandez having a shot blocked and then floating in a free-kick which Tosin Adarabioyo headed wide. Pedro Neto was also lively and it was his break down the left which led to Pedro's stunning opener on 18 minutes. We are all Pedro Neto right now. 😮💨#FIFACWC — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) July 8, 2025 Neto whipped in a cross which was cleared only as far as the former Brighton striker on the edge of the area and he brilliantly curled a shot beyond 44-year-old goalkeeper Fabio. It was a spectacular way to open his account for his new club but Pedro's celebrations were notably muted, almost apologetic, in front of the Fluminense fans. Chelsea could have immediately doubled their lead after Neto picked out Malo Gusto but the Frenchman's stooping header was straight at Fabio. They were almost made to regret that miss when Hercules broke through and rounded Robert Sanchez but Marc Cucurella cleared off the line. Chelsea had another scare when French referee Francois Letexier pointed to the penalty spot after a Fluminense cross flicked the head of Thiago Santos and then struck the arm of Trevoh Chalobah. It seemed a harsh decision and was reversed following a VAR review. Chelsea threatened again before the break when a Neto strike was deflected wide and Sanchez came to their rescue after the restart when he saved from Everaldo. Pedro struck the decisive blow on 56 minutes as Chelsea broke from deep inside their own half. Fernandez found Pedro with a superb through-ball and he cut inside Ignacio to hit a thunderous shot in off the underside of the bar. From then it became a case of seeing out the job and, although booked for time-wasting, Chelsea keeper Sanchez was not troubled. On the downside, Moises Caicedo appeared to pick up an injury in the closing stages. Nicolas Jackson could have added a third goal when he fired into the side-netting.
