Surge in serial killer baby names as dark 2025 parenting trend emerges
Throughout history, parents -to-be have found inspiration for baby names from a variety of sources, from great kings and queens to beloved relatives.
Now, mums and dads have found inspo in a bloody yet undeniably popular genre - true crime. To quote William Shakespeare, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose, By any other name would smell as sweet."
It's unlikely, however, that The Bard was at that time considering that people would one day be naming their daughters after the notorious serial killer, Rose West. And Rose isn't the only name creeping into the charts.
We humans have arguably long had a taste for the morbid and macabre, and a host of gripping crime documentaries and shocking podcasts are now accessible at the click of a button. And it would seem that some baby name choices are settling into our subconscious, alongside plenty of nightmares.
While announcing its Top 100 Baby Names of 2025, BabyCentre UK noted a new trend towards crime-related picks, which may well come as a surprise.
Intriguingly, as explained by experts, you may well have picked up a liking for a serial killer's name without even realising it, with chart-dominating listens making the monikers impossible to forget.
BabyCentre UK's Baby Naming Expert, and author, SJ Strum, revealed: 'These names aren't being chosen because of crime. More often, parents are unconsciously absorbing popular culture, and these names creep into our minds via gripping TV, podcasts and viral content. It's a fascinating lens on how culture shapes language, and by extension, baby names.'

Meanwhile, in quite literally much lighter news, celestial baby girl names are also on the rise, with names such as Luna, Nova, Aurora and Maryam lighting up the charts amid fascination with all things lunar cycles and astrology.

LIAM Payne's sister has paid an emotional tribute to the late star by visiting the site of a One Direction video. Liam appears from episode seven, and the series will be released this Wednesday. Ruth, 33, watched Building The Band ahead of its release, and took to Instagram to share how "proud" she is of her beloved brother. She said: "I didn't know whether to share this but it felt weird when I've raved about Liam's work and achievements for the last 15 years. "I'm heartbroken he never got to see how great he is in this show. "He knew he had done a good job, we all told him this when we were at filming, but watching it back, wow! Continuing the emotional message, Ruth said: "You're a star Liam, you always were and always will be. "There are a range of emotions I felt watching this, but one of the main ones is immeasurable pride, always. "Miss you more every day." LIAM'S LAST SHOW In the trailer, Liam tells one act: 'You've got a lot of work to do vocally — I need to feel that connection between you guys.' In another scene he is seen seemingly referring to his own One Direction past when he says: 'How these bands are put together is not normal — we were not put together that way.' The show brings together 50 musicians who have to form six bands, without ever seeing each other in person. They perform in individual booths and have to pick one another based on singing ability and compatibility alone. Building The Band: What We Know About The Netflix Show Starring The Late Singer Liam Payne
A new Netflix show Building The Band will star the late Liam Payne, who was a guest judge on the show. One Direction star Liam tragically died in October last year age 31, when he fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. At the time, Liam's family issued a statement following his death which read: 'We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts and we'll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul. We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.' Before he died, he filmed the competition series Building The Band, which has been dubbed a 'music experiment.' The show follows 50 singers who want to start a a band - but there's a twist. The contestants go in blind, and will discover their ideal bandmates based on what they sound like, their compatibility and their connection. However, not everyone will make the cut. The 50 contestants will be whittled down to six bands, and then one winner. As the Netflix synopsis teases, the show promises 'Plenty of drama, next level artistry and unforgettable performances.' Think of it as a mixture between Love Is Blind and The Voice. The filming for Building the Band took place in 2024, with filming wrapping in August. The three live shows were also filmed in late August at Aviva Studios in Manchester. The show's executive producer Cat Lawson said ahead of filming last year: 'Building the Band is a brave and bold undertaking for all involved as we hand over power to the singers themselves to form their own band based on chemistry first. With looks out of the equation, can they create a deeper connection with their bandmates? With limited bands, there are difficult decisions and heart-stopping moments along the way, but ultimately the outcome is truly amazing, with bands forming who in my opinion are worthy of the very biggest stage!' Liam Payne's involvement in the show was first announced last August, just two months before he died. The show has a total of ten episodes, and Liam will only appear from episode seven onwards. He is joined on the judging panel by Pussycat Dolls' Nicole Scherzinger and Destiny's Child star Kelly Rowland. The show is hosted by the Backstreet Boys' AJ McLean will host. Netflix said in a press release this week that Liam's family had given their blessings for the show to go ahead. They said his family had 'reviewed the series and [was] supportive of his inclusion.' Before the show starts, the show's host AJ will share an emotional tribute to Liam on screen. 'When we came together to film Building The Band, we never imagined we'd soon be saying goodbye to our friend, Liam Payne. Liam is a guest judge in later episodes and through his presence we see his deep love for music and his unwavering commitment to helping others find their voice,' he says. 'It is through that spirit that we dedicate this series to Liam and his family.' Tributes have also been flooding in online for Liam ahead of the show's launch. When Netflix shared the trailer on X, a fan commented: 'I'm glad it's still being released,' adding 'This way we can still see Liam's genuine love for music and helping people.' Another fan commented: 'Heartbreaking to see Liam Payne in this posted. It's going to be his final project forever. I'm going to be crying my eyes out watching this show.' The first four episodes will air on 9 July. Then, fans will have to wait a week or so for episodes 5, 6 and 7, which drop on July 16, 2025, followed by the final three episodes on July 23, 2025. And even if you are unlucky enough to be hit by re-buffering it should drag on a little less, with a 5 per cent cut to the duration. The firm has also managed to make start play faster, as well as decrease playback errors by 3 per cent. It's all thanks to some visual improvements going on behind the scenes at Netflix. The biggest part of all this is maintaining that film grain effect you'll be familiar with from cinemas. "Camera sensor noise introduces its own characteristics, while filmmakers often add intentional grain during post-production to evoke mood or a vintage feel," Netflix explained in a blog post. However, this can be tricky to maintain when compressing big videos down so they stream faster. Netflix says the feature has been rolling out since March - and you don't need to do anything to benefit from it. It's not clear which titles have been converted in this way. However, the blog post did show examples of how it had been achieved in They Cloned Tyrone, starring John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and Jamie Foxx.
