Tamil Nadu: DMK youth wing's resolutions passed at meeting in Tiruchirappalli under Udhayanidhi Stalin

The Youth Wing extended heartfelt condolences to the innocent civilians who lost their lives in the Phalgam terror attack and to the brave soldiers martyred in Operation Sindhoor. The meeting commended the Indian Army's strong counter-terrorism efforts.

The Supreme Court is set to take up a plea on Monday seeking the Indian government use diplomatic channels to Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala facing execution in Yemen for alleged murder. The hearing comes just two days before her scheduled execution on Tuesday, July 16. Priya, who hails from Kerala's Palakkad district, is currently lodged in a jail in the country's capital city of Sana'a.(Hindustan Times) Nimisha Priya is facing the execution for the alleged murder of her Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi in 2017. The plea filed in Supreme Court seeks to explore the option of paying 'blood money' to the victim's family in order to save Nimisha Priya from execution. The provision is permissible under Sharia law in Yemen, the plea argues. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta will likely hear the matter, that was listed for urgent hearing on July 10. Advocate Subhash Chandran KR submitted the plea, which argues that the payment of blood money would influence the victim's family to pardon the Kerala nurse. Nimisha Priya's family has reportedly offered $1 million ( ₹8.6 crore) as 'blood money' to the victim's family in hopes of saving her. Why Nimisha Priya is on death row Nimisha Priya is a 38-year-old nurse from Kerala's Palakkad district. She went to Yemen for work in 2011, but is currently locked up in a prison in the capital city Sana'a. She went to Yemen with her family, but her husband and daughter returned to India three years later in 2014 due to civil unrest in Yemen. Nimisha stayed back to support her family. However, Yemen's law mandates foreign medical practitioners partner up with a Yemeni national if they want to to open a clinic -- enter Talal Abdo Mahdi. Nimisha partnered with Mahdi for her clinic, but he allegedly falsified documents to falsely claim he was married to her, withheld her passport, subjected her to years of physical abuse, financial exploitation, and repeated threats. In 2017, Priya attempted to sedate Mahdi aiming to get hold of her passport so she could leave Yemen, but the dose turned lethal and he died. She also allegedly dismembered his body and dispose it. She was sentenced to death three years later in 2020, an order the Houthis' Supreme Judicial Council upheld in 2023. While Indian officials are engaged in efforts to prevent her execution, doing so is tricky because the prison she is lodged in is controlled by the Houthi administration, with which India has no formal diplomatic ties.

However, he expressed hope in young law graduates, whom he exhorted to lead with integrity and purpose. A practical path forward includes setting time-bound trial limits, increasing judicial appointments, integrating technology in court processes, and fast-tracking undertrial cases. Moreover, legal education must go beyond theory to instil ethical responsibility, shaping future lawyers as true guardians of justice. Mohammad Asad,Mumbai CJI is right about the craving for LLM from abroad Thestatement of the CJI B R Gavai as regards the fad of Indian students to go abroad for pursuing LLM courses is indeed true, particularly in the prevailing international circumstances. Moreover, laws may be universal but in practice they differ in the Indian context due to several inherent factors that must be understood at the grass root level. Returning to India after acquiring a PG qualification abroad does not in any way fetch more clients to practising lawyers. The young law graduates must evolve strategies to reduce delays in disposing cases, especially those related to innocent people, who have been in jails for decades together. The CJI has rightly advised students about not burdening their parents with financial requirements just to get a LLM from abroad but instead complete their higher education in India. President Droupadi Murmu has nominated special public prosecutor in the 26/11 case Ujjwal Nikam, former foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, educationist C Sadanandan Master, and historian Meenakshi Jain to the Rajya Sabha, a ministry of home affairs notification said on Sunday. The Constitution allows the President to nominate 12 people with 'special knowledge or practical experience' in the fields of literature, science, art, and social service to the Upper House. The appointments, made on the central government's recommendations, are intended to bring domain knowledge to parliamentary debates. 'In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (a) of clause (1) of article 80 of the Constitution of India, read with clause (3) of that article, the President is pleased to nominate to the Council of States the following persons to fill the vacancies caused due to retirement of nominated members: Shri Ujjwal Deorao Nikam, Shri C. Sadanandan Master, Shri Harsh Vardhan Shringla and Dr. Meenakshi Jain,' the MHA notification said. The term of nominated members is six years, and they are allowed to join a political party within six months of their appointment. Legal expertA noted lawyer, Nikam served as the government counsel in the Mumbai terror attacks case and played a key role in the conviction of terrorist Ajmal Kasab, who was sentenced to death in 2010. Recently, he was appointed the prosecutor in the politically charged Beed sarpanch murder case. He contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Mumbai North Central seat as a BJP candidate but lost. Lauding Nikam's devotion to the Constitution as 'exemplary,' the PM said: 'During his entire legal career, he has always worked to strengthen Constitutional values and ensure common citizens are always treated with dignity. It's gladdening that the President of India has nominated him to the Rajya Sabha.' Nikam, 72, thanked the President for nominating him and said: 'I thank President Droupadi Murmu for nominating me. When I met PM Narendra Modi during the Lok Sabha election campaign, he expressed his faith in me. Yesterday, PM Modi called to inform me about the nomination. He asked whether he should speak in Hindi or Marathi—both of us laughed. Then he spoke to me in Marathi…,' he said. Distinguished diplomat Shringla, who is a 1984 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, also served as India's ambassador to the United States and Bangladesh in his distinguished diplomatic career. He was also the chief coordinator for India's G20 Presidency in 2023. Congratulating Shringla on his nomination, Modi said he has excelled as a diplomat, intellectual, and strategic thinker. Noted educationist A veteran social worker and educationist from Kerala with decades of grassroots service, Master was a victim of political violence in 1994 when CPI(M) members dragged him out of a car and chopped off his legs in the state's Kannur purportedly over his affiliation with the RSS. He contested the 2016 and 2021 elections as a BJP candidate from the Koothuparambu assembly constituency but lost. 'Shri C. Sadanandan Master's life is the epitome of courage and refusal to bow to injustice. Violence and intimidation couldn't deter his spirit towards national development. His efforts as a teacher and social worker are also commendable,' the PM said. Master said that the opportunity will help him work towards the BJP's goal of a 'Viksit Kerala' and 'Viksit Bharat'. 'Today, thankfully there is peace in Kannur and I am among those who want the peace to prevail. I see the 1994 attack on me as a bad dream which I want to forget.
