Amit Shah urges youth to make India No.1 by 2047, hails legacy of tribal hero Govind Guru

AHMEDABAD: In a rousing call to action, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday urged the youth to commit themselves to making India a global leader by 2047, marking 100 years of independence. Linking the nation's future to its proud past, he paid tribute to tribal icon Govind Guru, crediting him with igniting public consciousness against British rule. Speaking via video link during a development programme in Gujarat's Panchmahal district, Shah said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is carrying forward Govind Guru's vision with a mission to build a 'Viksit Bharat'. The occasion also marked the launch of Rs 125 crore worth of infrastructure works at Shri Govind Guru University. Addressing the event virtually due to bad weather, Shah emphasised the significance of the tribal leader's contributions during British rule. 'Govind Guru awakened the conscience of the people during the colonial era. He was a valiant hero of India's freedom movement,' Shah said, recalling the Mangadh uprising, where 1,512 tribal men and women were martyred fighting British forces, an event that turned Mangadh into a landmark in India's independence history.

‘Anti-farmer schemes should not be implemented in Tamil Nadu'

The Thamizhdesiya Periyakkam has called upon the State government not to implement anti-farmer schemes in the State. In a statement here on Saturday, periyakkam's general secretary K. Venkatraman said the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti had taken up a pilot project of modernisation of irrigation network and had proposed to levy tax on farmers for usage of water for irrigation. Objecting to the move to levy tax on water used by farmers, Mr. Venkatraman said that already farmers were aware of the disadvantages of continuous operation of bore wells for irrigation. Such being the case, it would not be fair to tax farmers for using water for irrigation. He called upon the State government not to encourage or implement schemes proposed by the Union government that might affect farmers and declare categorically that the proposal would not be implemented in the State. Meanwhile, official sources said the proposal, being implemented as pilot project in select States, was aimed at modernisation of the irrigation network in a designated cluster. The objective was to create a robust back-end infrastructure for micro irrigation by farmers from established source to the farm gate up to one hectare with underground pressured piped irrigation. The use of SCADA, Internet of Things technology will be adopted for water accounting and water management and increase water usage efficiency at the farm level. Regarding the issue of levy of tax, sources added that Union Minister of Jal Shakti C.R. Patil had clarified that there was absolutely no provision under this pilot project nor any directive from the Government of India to impose user charges on farmers for water usage. Further, it was emphasised that both 'agriculture' and 'water' were State subjects and any decision regarding the collection of user charges, if to be collected, from water user associations or beneficiaries of this scheme, shall rest solely with the respective State governments implementing the scheme, sources added.

PM Modi honoured with ‘Dharma Chakravarti' on centenary of Jain guru Vidyanand

New Delhi, June 28 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honoured today with the title of 'Dharma Chakravarti' on centenary celebrations of Jain spiritual leader Vidyanand here. Speaking on receiving the award, PM Modi said, "On this occasion, you honoured me with the title of 'Dharma Chakravarti'. I do not consider myself suitable for this. But it is our culture that whatever we receive from saints, we accept it as 'prasad'. So, I humbly accept this 'prasad' and dedicate it to Maa Bharati'." The event was also attended by Union culture and tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Rashtrasant Paramparacharya Pragyasagar Muniraj, alongside other dignitaries, parliamentarians, and Jain acharyas, said a statement from the Ministry here. "This day is also special because on June 28, 1987, Acharya Vidyanand Muniraj received the title of 'Acharya'. It wasn't just an honour but it was also a 'pavitra dhaara' connecting the Jain culture to ideas, restraint and compassion. When we are celebrating his 100th birth anniversary today, it reminds us of that historic moment", PM Modi said, said the statement. He also visited a specially curated exhibition titled 'Life and Legacy of Acharya Shri 108 Vidyanand Ji Maharaj', which showcased murals, paintings, and rare archival material chronicling the saint's contributions. On the occasion, a commemorative stamp and coin were released, alongside a biographical volume detailing saint's life journey. The centenary celebrations which will be observed until April 22, 2026 mark the beginning of a year-long national tribute to the revered saint and scholar, organised jointly by the Culture Ministry and the Bhagwan Mahaveer Ahimsa Bharti centenary year will be observed through nationwide cultural, literary, educational, and spiritual programmes. Born in 1925 in Shedbal, Belagavi (Karnataka), Vidyanand became one of the most respected Jain monks of modern India. He memorised over 8,000 Jain Agamic verses and authored more than 50 influential works, including Jain Darshan, Anekantvad, and Mokshmarg Darshan. His historical contributions include designing the official Jain Flag and Emblem during the 2500th Nirvana Mahotsav of Bhagwan Mahavir in 1975. The five-colour flag and the Ahimsa hand symbol are now universally accepted across Jain traditions, as per the statement. He was also pivotal in identifying Basokund in Bihar as Bhagwan Mahavir's birthplace — a finding recognised by the Indian government in 1956.

Arunachal land for defence: SC stays Rs 410 cr recompense; Ref Court fixed compensation for land eight times of mkt rate

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday stayed an order of the Itanagar bench of Gauhati HC asking the Centre to deposit 50% of Rs 418 crore compensation, which the govt alleged was vitiated by forgery, for acquisition of 537 acres of land for defence projects in remote Indo-China border areas of Arunachal Pradesh. Appearing for the Union govt, additional solicitor general S D Sanjay told a bench led by Justice K V Viswanathan that one man forged and fabricated power of attorneys of 102 landowners and approached the Reference court for reassessment of the market value of the land, which the authorities had pegged at Rs 70 crore and paid the landowners. Sanjay said despite the govt pointing out the mischief played by one person, as against the rest of the landowners having recorded their satisfaction in cumulatively receiving Rs 70 crore as compensation, the Reference Court determined the market price of land in the remote areas to be eight times the rate arrived at by authorities. How did the land in the remote Indo-China border areas of Arunachal Pradesh rise from Rs 10-12 lakh per acre to nearly 80 lakh per acre, the ASG asked. The bench said it was the Union govt counsel which had agreed to deposit 10% of Rs 418 crore before the Itanagar bench and hence, it must do the same. The SC directed the Centre to deposit Rs 41.8 crore before the Itanagar Bench registry and ordered suspension of operation of the Reference Court's order. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending Local Enterprise Accounting Software [Click Here] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo The Union govt has pointed out that the redetermination of compensation amount was vitiated by 'forgery, fabrication and fraud played by one Dagli Riba, who alone had moved the Reference Court based on forged and fabricated power of attorneys of 102 landowners.' The Centre said the landowners had received compensation at the rate determined earlier and signed the deed of acceptance in November 2023 and did not approach the reference court for enhancement of compensation. It accused Riba of taking advantage of the situation to play fraud with the intention of pocketing the arbitrarily enhanced compensation amount. The defence ministry had on Feb 16, 2023, approved a proposal to acquire 537 acres in the general area of Bame village under Basar Circle, Leparada district in Arunachal Pradesh (border area) for establishment of Corps Ammunition Point. It had fixed the market rate of Rs 12.9 lakh per acre as compensation, totalling Rs 70 crore.
