Sheffield United relegated to FAWNL after defeat to Southampton
The Blades knew that they had to equal or better Portsmouth's result to take their survival bid down to the final day. Sheffield United lost 3-2 to Southampton at Bramall Lane while Portsmouth recorded an emphatic 4-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Fratton Park.

Sheffield United ended the afternoon on seven points, five points adrift of safety and their seven-year stay in the Barclays Women's Championship will therefore come to an end following next weekend's trip to Sunderland.
It has been a tough season for The Blades. The club appointed Ash Thompson as their head coach last summer and he was tasked with building a new squad from scratch. The team's only league victory came in the form of a 2-1 success at Blackburn Rovers back in October. Since recording that win, Sheffield United have gone 12 league matches without a victory.
For long spells, it had looked like newly-promoted Portsmouth would be the ones to drop out of the second tier but their much-improved form in the final weeks of the season, combined with Sheffield United's winless run, has resulted in The Blades falling through the trapdoor.

How Albion's academy put Callum back on track
Callum Mackley has revealed how Albion's academy restored his enjoyment of football. And the emerging defender might not be the only family member worth keeping an eye on. Mackley played the second half of the friendly win over Las Palmas in Marbella. He took the left-back role that night as Pervis Estupinan prepared for his move to Milan. But the 18-year-old can play anywhere across the back line, as he has shown for the under-21s. He also helped the 21s to a positive trip to Spain which included a 1-1 draw against Spanish second-tier side Cadiz. Mackley comes from Portsmouth and thanks his parents for their support, which included a fair few miles up and down the A27. He said: 'I have been at Brighton since I was 12 and I was at Southampton since the age of seven so that's a lot of driving and miles for my dad to cover. 'As well as my siblings who play football as well so him putting in that time and effort for me is really helpful.' Mackley made a big move along the coast which, by coincidence, mirrored that of fellow defender Ben White during his academy years. He said: 'When I was at Southampton with my brother, it came to the end of under-12s and I just wasn't enjoying it that much. 'Just the environment I was in. 'It was quite a hard decision for me and my family to decide to leave. 'Then when Brighton came in and asked about me, I went and had a look around and felt Brighton was the place for me. 'From all the staff, the education, the building. 'Just the feeling of the club was really attractive to me and since I have been here it has been the best. 'I am forever grateful for all the hard work the staff put in. 'There are too many people to mention – too many top coaches, all the way through the academy. 'I am just very grateful for their hard work and efforts, for giving me opportunities and trusting me and it has paid off.' Mackley highlighted the fact he was one of four players taken across from the 21s to the seniors in Spain. But the other three – Andrew Moran, Malick Yalcouye and new goalkeeper Nils Ramming – are experienced by comparison. Mackley is among the youngsters who has taken part in senior training sessions under Fabian Hurzeler's tenure. That meant he was comfortable stepping into a first-team environment which includes some big names and, in James Milner, a player who made his Prem debut four years before Mackley was born. He added: 'The manager Fabian likes to bring young lads in and train with the first team. 'I feel like that is what Brighton as a club are good at. 'Sometimes I am involved in a session and I feel like it is a good environment for me to gain experience and learn and be around the lads so, when opportunities like that come along, it is not a surprise. 'It is more a comfortable transition. 'I see first team players around the building every day. 'We all know each other and it is a nice atmosphere.' That atmosphere could be heard as non-playing squad members watched the Las Palmas game. 'Even lads on the pitch, James (Milner) and (Eiran) Cashin. It's nice to hear and pushes me on.' Mackley made sure close family were able to follow his performance against Las Palmas and was on the phone afterwards to his footballing family. He said: 'My little brother is currently on trial at Bournemouth. 'My older brother used to play. 'And then my youngest brother just plays Sunday League but he is a cracking little player!'

Rangers make offer for Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi
Rangers have made an offer for Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi. The approach from the Scottish Premiership club was for an initial loan with a potential obligation to buy worth up to £10million. The offer was rejected by Palace but Rangers' pursuit of the 22-year-old remains ongoing and there is interest from elsewhere. Advertisement Rak-Sakyi came through the youth ranks at Chelsea before moving to Palace in 2019 and signing a first professional deal with the club back in 2021. Rak-Sakyi has made 10 first-team appearances for Palace and spent last season on loan in the Championship with Sheffield United. He played 36 times in all competitions, scoring seven goals, as Chris Wilder's side missed out on promotion to the Premier League with defeat in the playoff final. Capped at Under-20 and Under-21 level by England, Rak-Sakyi is also eligible to represent Ghana through his parents. Rangers have had a busy summer with Oscar Cortes, Thelo Aasgaard, Joe Rothwell and Max Aarons among a number of new arrivals. New head coach Russell Martin kicked off his tenure with a 2-0 win over Panathinaikos in the second round of Champions League qualifying on Tuesday. By Crystal Palace correspondent Matt Woosnam Rak-Sakyi has been unsettled at Palace after a disappointing season in 2023-24 where he was not loaned out and overlooked for selection as well as suffering from injury problems. The 22-year-old was wanted previously by Southampton when Martin was manager there, and a loan with an option to buy was proposed, only to fall well below Palace's asking price. The winger had been impressed by Martin's sales pitch and preferred a permanent departure but no move was forthcoming. After just six substitute appearances in the Premier League that season, he was loaned to Sheffield United last summer as he was not in Palace manager Oliver Glasner's plans. There, he played 1,743 minutes in the Championship, playing 1,743 minutes. His future at Palace remains uncertain, but they had previously looked to the £20million fee Chelsea received from Ipswich Town for Omari Hutchinson as a benchmark as to his potential value should he perform well out on loan. With two years left on a five-year deal signed in August 2022, there is no immediate rush for Palace to make a decision on whether to sell, but they will need to persuade him to sign fresh terms if they want to achieve maximum value in future.
