Cape Coral Police said attempted kidnapping probe revealed minor provided partial story

Yahoo13-05-2025
Nearly a week after Cape Coral Police began to investigate a reported attempted kidnapping — which happened an hour before a separate North Fort Myers suspicious incident, authorities say conversations with the minor and his family "may not have accurately reflected all of the facts of the incident."
Authorities said a juvenile reported he left his home around 7:30 a.m. to ride his bicycle to his bus stop. The juvenile said he sat down at the bench at the intersection of Northeast 41st Street and Andalusia Boulevard when a black SUV driving south on Andalusia pulled up next to him with two men inside.
According to initial reports, one of the men lunged at the child, who said he then got on his bicycle and rode back home.

Authorities said the boy described the men as white or Hispanic and around 30 years old.
The minor said the driver was wearing a graphic T-shirt and the passenger was wearing a puffy black jacket and ripped jeans. They were in a black SUV with possible front-end damage.
According to police, its Violent Crimes Unit began to investigate that morning.
Police on May 12 stated they believe an incident occurred, but not an attempted abduction.
According to police, their conversations with the child's family led them to believe the child may have ridden his bicycle in the path of a vehicle, and the driver may have confronted the child for doing that.

July 4th events across LA area canceled over ICE raid fears

A number of Fourth of July celebrations across the Los Angeles area have been canceled amid fears of federal immigration enforcement raids. The big picture: Los Angeles area protests last month put the city at the center of nationwide unrest around the Trump administration's aggressive deportation push. The administration has continued to target LA — and other parts of California — suing the city this week, alleging that its sanctuary policies led to "lawlessness, rioting, looting, and vandalism." State of play: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have carried out deportation operations in Los Angeles County communities with large immigrant populations. For one, there have been raids targeting day laborers near Home Depot locations throughout the county. Protesters have also tried to access locations like Dodger Stadium (which ICE has denied), during a game with large Mexican American fan bases. Now, out of caution, various city leaders and organizers have decided to cancel Independence Day celebrations and other summer events for the public, particularly in communities with large Hispanic populations. Case in point: The L.A. County Department of Parks and Recreation canceled its East Los Angeles Rock'in 4th of July celebration, along with other summer events. "Out of caution, and in response to recent ICE enforcement activity impacting our communities, we are prioritizing safety and well-being of our residents, visitors, and staff," the department said. Celebrations in the cities of Bell Gardens, Boyle Heights, Cudahy, El Sereno, Huntington Park, Lincoln Heights and Whittier were also cancelled or postponed. Organizers canceled Los Angeles County's Gloria Molina Grand Park Summer Block Party, "out of an abundance of caution and in light of ongoing events across L.A. county."

Lehigh Acres man gets two life sentences for violating injunction, murdering woman

A Lehigh Acres man who faced capital murder charges after a grand jury indicted him nearly five years ago reached a plea deal last week, avoiding a potential death sentence. Ja'Quan Robinson, 28, on June 23 pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree murder, first-degree burglary with assault or battery and violating an injunction for protection against domestic violence. Lee Circuit Judge Robert Branning handed Robinson two life sentences. Fatal crash arrest: Estero man arrested for DUI manslaughter after rear-ending car at high speed, killing one In October 2020, Robinson snuck into the Fort Myers home of a victim police said he knew and hid, waiting for her. He then came out of hiding and killed her, beating her to death. Authorities said Robinson also violated an order of protection in going near her. Her identity remains redacted in court documents. When Fort Myers Police officers arrived during the wee hours Oct. 14, 2020, they met with the complainant, who reported stated that her current boyfriend, Robinson, was threating to harm her grandmother and throwing rocks at their windows. The witness did not see Robinson throwing rocks or see him on their property, but believed it was him, according to his arrest affidavit. Officers canvassed the area but did not find Robinson. While officers documented the incident, the report states, a call requested the emergency response to an undisclosed location. The caller said she had spoken with her boyfriend at the time, Robinson, who "threatened to come to the residence and kill her grandparents." The caller also reported her aunt was screaming downstairs "like someone is hurting her." When officers kicked down a door at the home, they found a woman who lay face-down on the ground covered in blood. A responding officer saw a man, later identified as Robinson, wearing a ski mask, a dark-colored long-sleeved shirt and dark-colored pants, who appeared to walk "very quickly." When officers stopped him, they reported he had dried blood on his left forearm, as well as dried blood on both hands and blood spots on his feet. The report stated the victim suffered lacerations to the chin and skull. Tomas Rodriguez is a Breaking/Live News Reporter for the Naples Daily News and The News-Press. More California July 4th events canceled due to immigration raids

(KTLA) – More Southern California communities have canceled or postponed their 4th of July celebrations due to federal immigration raids occurring across the region. Among the most prominent canceled events is the Gloria Molina Grand Park's Summer Block Party, originally scheduled for July 4. According to the event's website, the postponement comes 'in light of recent events affecting a portion of Downtown Los Angeles and the ongoing circumstances impacting the region.' No official rescheduled date was announced; the website only stated that the Summer Block Party will be held 'later in the summer.' In Cudahy – a city where 97% of the population identifies as Hispanic – the celebration originally set for July 3 has been postponed, officials announced. Parks will remain open, and regular programming is set to continue as scheduled. The community of Bell Gardens, which borders Cudahy, has canceled a concert and two outdoor movie showings, including one that was scheduled for this past Saturday and another planned for July 3. City officials said the cancellations were out of 'an abundance of caution regarding concerns for resident safety over federal immigration enforcement activities.' Another nearby community, Huntington Park, has also canceled its Independence Day celebration that was supposed to be held on July 3. No reason for the cancellation was given. Other local predominantly Hispanic communities have also called off their 4th of July celebrations, including El Sereno, where the community's annual Independence Day parade has been canceled this year. All July 4 celebrations in L.A. City Council District 14 – which encompasses many Hispanic communities in East L.A. – have been canceled or postponed in the wake of the immigration raids, a spokesperson for Councilwoman Ysabel Jurado told the Boyle Heights Beat. Speaking to Nexstar's KTLA on Monday morning, East Los Angeles resident Jordan Escobar said he understands why officials are canceling events and why many may not even be in the mood to celebrate. 'I have family members who are being affected by this, and I have other friends that I know who are being affected by these injustices right now,' Escobar said. 'So I get why people are refraining [from celebrating]. I believe it's important to voice our opinions.'
