Match Tactical: Manchester United vs West Ham United

Yahoo4 days ago
Manchester United are set to kick off their Premier League Summer Series tour to the US when they take on West Ham United.
Coming off an understated goalless draw with Leeds United, Ruben Amorim's men will surely look to be more effective in front of goal as they look to bring cheer to their American fanbase.
While Amorim will almost certainly look to rotate his squad with a flood of half-time substitutions, there are some common tactical decisions that the Man United manager should consider taking if he hopes to get the better of the Hammers in New Jersey.
Learning from past mistakes
During the Leeds game, we saw United take a barrage of shots, yet with little accuracy.
Out of their 18 attempts on goal, only four reached their target, while two unluckily hit the woodwork. (Sky Sports)
What's particularly alarming about this statistic is that the vast majority of United's chances came from the centre of the box, where players were facing the goal head-on, albeit at varying distances from the goal. A minority of chances, namely five, were taken from tight angles outside of the goalposts' jurisdiction.
One could only hope that Amorim spotted this lack of shooting accuracy and has worked on it with his players during training. After all, it's incredibly wasteful for his players to complete all of the necessary work to create 19 chances, only to fall at the final hurdle each and every time.
Although it may be important to reflect on the previous match, some bad habits from last season persist.
Speed things up
If one looks at the attacking momentum chart from the Leeds' draw, we see how United continued a long-standing frustrating habit from last season.
With the exception of the final minutes of the second half, United's attacking intensity was underwhelming, with the team very seldom bursting forward at a quick pace to knock Leeds' defence off balance.
By exhibiting a slow build-up, they gave the opposition sufficient time to drop back and defend in comfort, squandering their chance to secure what should have been a straightforward win.
While Amorim's starting lineup remains to be seen, it would be good for him to leverage the pace of his quickest attackers. These could be long-standing players such as Amad Diallo or new talents such as Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Whoever ends up playing, Amorim should make the most of the fast legs at his disposal.
For United, this pre-season marks a moment of rebuild, with fans hoping that their club can bounce back from what was a lacklustre debut campaign under Amorim, to say the least. In addition to being achievable, a victory over West Ham would go a long way to restoring the confidence of an anxious fanbase that certainly deserves more to cheer about than what they've been receiving in recent times.

Report: Goalkeeper on United radar as Newcastle make strategic approach

Nick Pope on Man United's Radar as Ramsdale Eyes Newcastle Move Ramsdale's Rebuild Under Howe According to talkSPORT, Newcastle United are actively pursuing goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in a bid to reunite him with Eddie Howe, who managed the shot-stopper at Bournemouth. Ramsdale is believed to be keen on a Premier League No.1 role to strengthen his claim for a spot in England's squad for the 2026 World Cup. This prospective move could have significant consequences at St James' Park. Should Ramsdale arrive, it would cast serious doubt over Nick Pope's future as Newcastle's first-choice goalkeeper. Man United's Goalkeeping Dilemma The uncertainty surrounding Pope has reportedly caught the attention of Manchester United. With Ruben Amorim still seeking a reliable alternative or challenger to Andre Onana, Pope's experience and profile are seen as an ideal fit. The 33-year-old, whose contract is set to expire next summer, could become a smart and cost-effective option. Photo IMAGO talkSPORT state: 'Nick Pope could emerge as a target for Manchester United if Newcastle sign Aaron Ramsdale.' This domino effect could see one England international replace another at two of the Premier League's top clubs. Leeds Interest Fades as Perri Signs Earlier this summer, Leeds United were also credited with an interest in Pope, though they have since turned to Lucas Perri from Lyon to fill their goalkeeping vacancy. This likely leaves Manchester United and possibly other top-flight sides as potential destinations should Pope seek pastures new. Goalkeeper Carousel Could Define Season Ahead This transfer chain could see Ramsdale move for more minutes, Pope seek redemption at another top club, and United recalibrate their options after another Onana rocky campaign. It's a rare moment where multiple Premier League clubs could benefit from one bold move — if each piece of the puzzle falls into place. Our View – EPL Index Analysis From a Manchester United supporter's perspective, this report presents both opportunity and intrigue. Nick Pope might not be the most glamorous name linked with Old Trafford, but he represents consistency, maturity and Premier League experience — qualities sorely missed during Andre Onana's erratic time England. While Onana did improve after his disastrous start, there's still a lingering sense among fans that he lacks the authoritative presence that United keepers like van der Sar or De Gea once brought. Pope's possible arrival would not necessarily spell the end for Onana but would provide genuine competition — something many believe is crucial in elite squads. Also, from a fan's standpoint, the idea of acquiring a current or former England international — especially one with something to prove — aligns with the mentality Ruben Amorim is trying to instil. Pope's professionalism and quiet leadership might be just what the dressing room needs.

Vlahovic and Goncalo Ramos' future intertwined as United wait

Manchester United may lose two of their potential striking targets to the same team. Striker search After missing out on Liam Delap, Viktor Gyokeres and Hugo Ekitike to Premier League rivals, United are still searching for number nine solutions. The news broke yesterday that United had narrowed their search down to Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and Red Bull Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko. Nonetheless, should United also miss out on these options, they have been linked to loan options that could come at the end of August. Loan opportunities Juventus' relationship with Dusan Vlahovic is at an all-time low and the club is desperate to see the player leave the club this summer. Moreover, United have been linked to the Serbian and have also been credited with interest in Paris Saint-Germain's Portuguese attacker, Goncalo Ramos. AC Milan lurking United could swoop for either player but this is under threat by the summer activity of Italian giants AC Milan. The Rossoneri's interest in Vlahovic has already been reported on. Italian outlet Calciomercato assert that 'AC Milan is trying to intensify contacts to find the right formula for signing the Juventus number nine. This signing will only happen if the player reduces his net salary to €6-7 million.' The Juventus striker is said to be the club's 'main priority' but the club does have a back-up plan, involving another United target. It is reported that 'AC Milan, however, is also considering other options and their plan B is Goncalo Ramos, the Portuguese striker owned by PSG, who is seeking more playing time and who is looking at his transfer options.' PSG have no intention of selling Ramos, who they paid €65 million just two years ago. Nonetheless, they could be open to a loan move, something that Milan would favour due to their restricted financial situation.
