Vancouver Whitecaps to buy out contract of veteran forward Damir Kreilach
Kreilach was scheduled to make his final appearance for the team later Friday when Vancouver visits the L.A. Galaxy.
The 35-year-old Croatian joined the Whitecaps ahead of the 2024 season after six years with Real Salt Lake, where he served as captain. Kreilach was in the final year of his contract with Vancouver, which carried a salary of US$495,000.
Kreilach made 31 appearances across all competitions for Vancouver, tallying four goals and one assist.
He appeared in three Major League Soccer matches this season, all as a substitute, logging 20 minutes and scoring one goal.

The defending MLS champion Galaxy have won just 5 percent of their matches this season entering Friday's clash against the Vancouver Whitecaps in Carson, Calif. MLS-worst Los Angeles (1-13-6, 9 points) has earned points in three of its last four matches (1-1-2) -- the Galaxy tied the San Jose Earthquakes 1-1 at Stanford Stadium last Saturday -- but the hole is particularly deep. 'I think we have to look at every game as of the utmost importance,' Galaxy coach Greg Vanney told reporters. 'I think we should have taken 15 because we were either in leading positions in the last minutes of the game or in the event of the other night,' he continued, 'we had eight big chances that we don't take and I feel like we've got to figure out as a group and understand, as a group, to take the points that we deserve on the night.' Los Angeles fell behind early against San Jose before Marco Reus scored the equalizer in the 70th minute. Reus has four goals and is tied for the team lead with Christian Ramirez. The Galaxy look to avenge a 2-1 loss at Vancouver on March 2. Whitecaps star Brian White scored the winner in the 87th minute of that match. White has a team-high 10 goals. Vancouver (11-3-5, 38 points) resides in second place in the West after losing consecutive games to the Columbus Crew and San Diego FC last month. Vancouver continues to play without star Ryan Gauld due to a knee injury. Gauld scored 30 goals over the past three MLS seasons. He had one in three matches this season but last played on March 8. Progress has been extremely slow but Whitecaps coach Jesper Sorensen maintains hope the midfielder will return later this season. 'I will not expect him to be out for the season,' Sorensen told reporters. 'We hope that he'll be back sooner than later, but we've said that many times. I can't say anything really decisive about it.' This is the Whitecaps' second game in Los Angeles in six days. Vancouver beat LAFC 1-0 last Sunday. Kyle Walker ends 8-year spell with Man City by moving to Burnley
BURNLEY, England (AP) — England right back Kyle Walker ended his eight-year stint at Manchester City by moving to Burnley on Saturday in a deal reportedly worth 5 million pounds ($6.8 million). The 35-year-old Walker joins an American-owned team that has just been promoted to the Premier League and is coached by Scott Parker, his former Tottenham and England teammate. Walker has been a great at City, winning six league titles and the Champions League since his 2017 move from Spurs, but lost his place in the team last season and went on loan to AC Milan. He kept his place in the England squad, though, playing in the team's last game — a 3-1 loss to Senegal last month — to move onto 96 caps. 'When I spoke to Scott and heard about his plans for next season, it was an opportunity I jumped at,' said Walker, who has signed a two-year deal. 'He's done an amazing job here, guiding the club back to the Premier League with a 100-point haul, and now we're looking forward, together, at being back in the greatest league in the world. Liverpool players join family of Diogo Jota and his brother for funeral held in Portugal
GONDOMAR, Portugal (AP) — Liverpool players joined family and friends for the funeral of their teammate Diogo Jota and his brother on Saturday, two days after the siblings died in a car crash in Spain. The service will be held at Igreja Matriz church in the Portuguese town of Gondomar, where Jota had a home. Portugal's national team coach Roberto Martínez and several top Portuguese players also attended, including Manchester City duo Bernardo Silva and Rúben Dias and Manchester United's Bruno Fernándes. Jota, 28, and his brother, André Silva, 25, were found dead near Zamora in northwestern Spain early Thursday after the Lamborghini they were driving crashed on an isolated stretch of highway just after midnight on Thursday and burst into flames. The brothers were reportedly heading to catch a boat from northern Spain to go to England where Jota was to rejoin with Liverpool after a summer break. Spanish police are investigating the cause of the crash, which did not involve another vehicle, they said. They said they believe it could have been caused by a blown tire. Their bodies were repatriated to Portugal after being identified by the family. A wake was held for them on Friday. Jota's death occurred two weeks after he married long-time partner Rute Cardoso while on vacation from a long season where he helped Liverpool win the Premier League. The couple had three children, the youngest born last year. Jota was born in Porto but started his playing career as a child on nearby Gondomar. Silva played for Portuguese club Penafiel in the lower divisions.
