SA Padel Invitational brings padel's biggest stars to SA shores

South Africa is swinging open the doors to the world of padel with its first-ever South African Padel Invitational, a milestone the organisers say will inspire a new generation of local players.
Announced at an exclusive launch event on July 10 at Wanderers, the invitational will see 12 of the world's top-ranked padel players competing on local courts over five weeks, giving fans rare front-row access to the fast-growing sport.
Mohammed Saloojee, from the SA Padel Invitational organising committee, said: 'Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we launch the South African Invitational, for the first time on the African continent.'

He added that they are bringing Artur Oruelo, Augustin Tapia, and 17-time world champion Fernando 'Bela' Belasteguín, among other superstars.
'This is more than just a tournament; it's a statement that we belong on the world stage.'
Padel, which combines elements of tennis and squash, is one of the world's fastest-growing sports, with a diverse player base in South Africa.
Sarfraz Bismilla pointed out that it is fantastic that they have got children as young as 14 playing with adults in their late 60s. 'The age group averages about 32, almost evenly split between men and women. It breaks the boundaries we see in other sports.'

The invitational will run like a mini-world cup, with group stages, nail-biting quarterfinals, and a high-stakes final. Fans can tune in via livestream to put their questions directly to the stars.
Mohammed Majam, also on the organising team, said choosing a venue large enough was a challenge. 'There was no indoor venue that could hold this, so, it's an honour to host it on the sacred grounds of our biggest local facility. This isn't just about sport; it's a weekend festival with DJs, entertainment, and the world's best padel talent.'
Event details: August 15 to 17 at the DP World Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg.

Kaizer Chiefs ‘will learn' from heavy defeat to Utrecht

"For sure, we are Kaizer Chiefs, we never want to lose," said Matlou. Following their big loss to Utrecht, Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou believes Amakhosi will learn from these kinds of games and get better. This comes after Chiefs suffered a 4-0 loss to Utrecht in a preseason friendly in the Netherlands. ALSO READ: Chiefs coach and fans' passion are the perfect mix 'I hate losing. However, these are highly competitive games and that's how you get better as a team. You don't get better playing weaker teams,' Matlou told the Chiefs media. 'Besides that, we are getting to know each other. We are improving on when to press, where to press, how to press. Those are all elements that are important to work on during pre-season in preparation for when the league starts. 'For sure, we are Kaizer Chiefs, we never want to lose. However, we are building up a strong side to compete, not only in South Africa, but also in the CAF Confederation Cup on the African continent. 'And, yes, we all know, it's pre-season. So, winning is maybe not the most important issue at this stage. On the other hand, our next fixture is already on Saturday. We definitely want to win that one.' Chiefs' next preseason match will be against NEC Nijmegen this afternoon. Kick-off is set for 2pm. Meanwhile, young defender Aiden McCarthy, who has formed a good combination at central defence with Inacio Miguel, said following the 'tough' encounter against Utrecht, he was looking forward to playing more games alongside the Angolan defender. ALSO READ: Pirates lose to Bolton in preseason friendly in Marbella 'It was a really tough encounter,' said McCarthy. 't is not for nothing that FC Utrecht finished in fourth position on the log standings in Holland.' 'It was interesting to see how they processed this match and how they approached it, especially when they pressured us', continued McCarthy 'We understand each other very well. We often don't even need to communicate with one another to know what needs to be done,' added McCarthy.

Bryanston Sports Club pits their best potjies forward

There was no winter chill strong enough to dampen the spirit at Bryanston Sports Club on June 28, when locals gathered for a community potjie afternoon. The club grounds came alive with the comforting smells of meat, vegetables, and spices bubbling away in cast-iron pots, while old friends and new faces swapped stories around the fires. Also read: Discovery Padel Courts hosts exciting event for padel beginners For many, this event was a reminder that sometimes the best way to bring people together is with good, simple food cooked outdoors. Dorian Gordon, one of the competitors, said: 'It's not really about who makes the best potjie; it's about sharing a meal and feeling like you belong.' The turnout was one of the biggest, and the community kept the spirit alive throughout the cold day. R3 million payment for Orlando Pirates coach

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has won a major legal case against his former Congolese club AS Vita following a prolonged dispute over wrongful dismissal. Currently in Spain with his new team, Orlando Pirates, for pre-season training, the Moroccan coach received a favourable decision from FIFA's Dispute Resolution Chamber. The verdict comes nearly a year after Ouaddou lodged the complaint with the global football authority. Orlando Pirates news: 100k salary and coach in hospital Abdelsam Ouaddou in charge of Marumo Gallants. Image: Sowetan According to reports from African media on Thursday, FIFA has officially sanctioned AS Vita, ordering the club to pay Ouaddou approximately $180,000 (around R3.2 million) in unpaid wages and bonuses. In addition to the financial penalty, the club now faces a transfer ban that will remain in effect until the full amount is paid. R10 million from Kaizer Chiefs to sign talented PSL winger? The dispute dates back to October 2024, when Ouaddou abruptly parted ways with AS Vita under contentious circumstances. He accused the Kinshasa-based club of unfair treatment and failure to honour his contract, leading him to take the case to FIFA. 'The former coach of AS Vita has won his case against the club and is set to smile all the way to the bank,' an insider told Soccer Laduma. 'He deserves it, as the club owed him a significant amount of money. That's why he left in the first place — not because he wanted to, but because of the situation. 'He believed in the project, and it really was a strong one at one of Africa's top clubs. But he's not focused on the past. He's now fully committed to another exciting project with Orlando Pirates, and he's happy to be there,' the source concluded. This ruling marks a significant win for the coach and highlights the importance of contractual integrity and legal recourse in professional football.
