Defender departs as Jets squad takes shape ahead of preseason training
The Newcastle Jets have parted ways with centreback Phil Cancar in the first of three expected changes to the squad ahead of the start of preseason training on Tuesday. Cancar has been released from final year of his contract in Newcastle and is expected to join Western Sydney. The 24-year-old returns to Wanderers, where he spent two seasons from 2020 and made 12 A-League appearances. New Jets coach Mark Milligan is rebuilding the roster, which finished ninth last season. The Jets have been linked to a move for attacking midfielder Alex Badalato, who was on loan from Wanderers to Melbourne Victory last season. The 20-year-old led the Young Socceroos to Asian Cup success earlier this year and was named player of the tournament. Former Sydney FC midfielder Max Burgess has finalised a deal with the Jets while the Newcastle Herald understands that Dundee captain Joe Shaunessy has agreed to terms. Shaunessy, 32, turned down a two-year extension in Scotland, to move to Australia. His impending arrival combined with Cancar's departure leaves the Jets with four senior centrebacks - Shaughnessy, Aleks Susnjar, Mark Natta - and scholarship player Ben Van Dorssen on the Jets books. Kosta Grozos was used as a makeshift centreback ahead of Cancar for much of last season by then Jets coach Rob Stanton. The latest development leaves Milligan with 13 senior players on contract, not including Burgess, Shaughnessy and Badalato, plus scholarship players Will Dobson, Alex Nunes, Van Dorssen. Teenage Sydney FC left back Richard Nkomo is likely to receive a scholarship. Milligan plans to run with a squad of 19 senior players and seven scholarships. One of the vacant places will go to a second keeper. Cancar is the ninth player from last season's roster to depart, following Ryan Scott, Cal Timmins, Charles M'mombwa, Wellissol, Dane Ingham, Matt Scarcella, Justin Vidic and Jacob Dowse, who has medically retired. Sheffield Wednesday will head to the Toughsheet Community Stadium (Image: PA) Wanderers will host Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in the opening round of next season's Carabao Cup. The sides last met in the 2022/23 campaign as the Owls clinched promotion back to the second tier via the play-offs. Advertisement The Yorkshire outfit were recently hit by a three-window transfer fee ban after failing to pay their players and speculation persists over the future of manager Danny Rohl. The draw was carried out live on Sky Sports News by former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given and ex-Liverpool star John Barnes. First-round ties are scheduled to be played in the week commencing Monday, August 11. The competition is regionalised between northern and southern sections at this stage. Wanderers overcame Mansfield on penalties in the opening round last season and backed that result up with a 2-0 win at Shrewsbury. The Whites were drawn against Arsenal at the Emirates in the third round and their run came to an end despite Aaron Collins' goal. Wycombe Wanderers set to sign former Manchester City goalkeeper
Mikki van Sas is expected to join Wycombe on loan this summer (Image: Martin Rickett/PA Images) Wycombe Wanderers are expected to sign Feyenoord goalkeeper Mikki van Sas. The 21-year-old, who spent three years at Manchester City between 2020 and 2023, is set to replace Will Norris as the Chairboys' number one for the upcoming 2025/26 season. Advertisement The Adams Park side had hopes to secure the services of Reading shot-stopper Joel Pereira, but those plans were thwarted after he signed a contract extension with the Berkshire-based team. For Wanderers, van Sas' pending arrival will mean he will become Wycombe's sixth first-choice keeper since 2020. Ryan Allsop was the undisputed number one between 2018 and 2021 before he was dropped for David Stockdale, who played 63 consecutive league games for Wycombe. His departure in 2022 saw Max Stryjek join, but after some erratic displays in 2023/24, he was displaced by Franco Ravizzoli. The Argentine was virtually ever-present (excluding two games) in the league for roughly 12 months when Will Norris joined on a free transfer from Portsmouth in February and displaced the South American. Advertisement And despite keeping 10 clean sheets in 19 matches at the back end of last season, his displays were not as convincing as hoped, with high-profile errors coming in defeats against Birmingham City and Charlton Athletic, respectively. This has led the club to look into the market, with van Sas poised to sign. It is also expected that with fellow keepers Shamal George and Lauri Shala still on the books at HP12, Norris will leave Wanderers this summer. Ravizzoli will also depart the South Buckinghamshire side once his contract expires on June 30. For van Sas, the Dutchman spent last year on loan at Vitesse. Advertisement He has also played for the national team's U15s, 16s and 18s and U19s, but he has yet to make his professional debut for the first team. He has also not featured for Feyenoord's men's team following his arrival in 2023.

Wanderers veteran earns Comrades triple green number
Long-time Wanderers Athletics Club member Mark Hoffman crossed the finish line of his 30th Comrades Marathon on June 8, earning the coveted triple green permanent number, a milestone that reflects three decades of grit, sweat, and heart. Hoffman's running journey started with a dare at the Long Bar after a few pints back in 1993. What followed was a lifelong passion marked by over 165 marathons and ultra-marathons. Despite battling a foot injury this year, and painful blisters mid-race, he powered through the 87 gruelling kilometres from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Read more: Watch: Comrades Marathon hero helps collapsed runner finish race 'The race becomes incredibly tough around the 50km mark,' he said. 'But mind-power, and the support of fellow runners and spectators, carried me through.' Though Hoffman didn't run with fellow Wanderers members this year, he never felt alone. 'Over 30 years I've made so many friends, and every year, new ones too.' After 11 hours and 41 minutes on the road, Hoffman crossed the finish line with tears of joy, cheered on by his wife Estelle, his steadfast supporter for 23 of the 30 races. Now, looking ahead to the 100th Comrades in 2027 and his 30th Two Oceans, Hoffman says he might take a break, but his story is far from finished. Young Proteas, Bavuma fanatic can name the whole WTC squad (WATCH)
Nine-year-old Danny Winks is about as passionate a Proteas fan as you're likely to find. This is the most wholesome video you'll see today, and the boy can play, too. Nine-year-old Proteas fanatic Daniel Winks was beside himself with excitement as he waited to get Temba Bavuma's signature at OR Tambo airport. Can you blame him? The Proteas gloriously return to South African soil after winning the World Test Championships against Australia at Lord's. This ends a 27-year trophy drought as far as ICC-sanctioned events go. It's not an exaggeration to suggest that this momentous Proteas success will usher in a new generation of fans. Daniel, however, has been passionately following South African cricket for as long as he could hold a ball. The youngster is a batting all-rounder with best bowling figures of 3/1 off three overs, and his high score is 74 off 44 balls in an U11 game. Daniel plays U9 for Wanderers and the Graham MacMillan High Performance Academy and occasionally for the U9 and U11 South African Cricket Academy sides. Meanwhile, check out the video below where Daniel sends the ball over the ropes for a maximum to bring up his half century. May as well do it in style, right?
